TOWLE, JOHN RODERICK; Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

TOWLE, JOHN R.

Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Army, Company C, 504th Parachute Infantry, 82d Airborne Division. Place and date: Near Oosterhout, Holland, 21 September 1944. Entered service at: Cleveland, Ohio. Birth: Cleveland, Ohio. G.O. No.: 18, 15 March 1945. Citation. For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty on 21 September 1944, near Oosterhout, Holland. The rifle company in which Pvt. Towle served as rocket launcher gunner was occupying a defensive position in the west sector of the recently established Nijmegen bridgehead when a strong enemy force of approximately 100 infantry supported by 2 tanks and a half-track formed for a counterattack. With full knowledge of the disastrous consequences resulting not only to his company but to the entire bridgehead by an enemy breakthrough, Pvt. Towle immediately and without orders left his foxhole and moved 200 yards in the face of Intense small-arms fire to a position on an exposed dike roadbed. From this precarious position Pvt. Towle fired his rocket launcher at and hit both tanks to his immediate front. Armored skirting on both tanks prevented penetration by the projectiles, but both vehicles withdrew slightly damaged. Still under intense fire and fully exposed to the enemy, Pvt. Towle then engaged a nearby house which 9 Germans had entered and were using as a strongpoint and with 1 round killed all 9. Hurriedly replenishing his supply of ammunition, Pvt. Towle, motivated only by his high conception of duty which called for the destruction of the enemy at any cost, then rushed approximately 125 yards through grazing enemy fire to an exposed position from which he could engage the enemy half-track with his rocket launcher. While in a kneeling position preparatory to firing on the enemy vehicle, Pvt. Towle was mortally wounded by a mortar shell. By his heroic tenacity, at the price of his life, Pvt. Towle saved the lives of many of his comrades and was directly instrumental in breaking up the enemy counterattack.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Cleveland, Ohio
Cemetery: Calvary Cemetery

Born: 1924 Cleveland, OH

Died: 1944 Killed in Action -- Awarded Posthumously.

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_pz/towle...

Note: This is not my ancestry.

I inheited a gold bracelet bearing the initials HLT. This has been a real mystery, because nobody in my family has a last name T. But I have uncovered two possibilities:
My great aunt and uncle, Tinnie Mae Christian and William Julian Rutherford, were married 11/10/07.
One of the attendants was Miss Hattie Turner.
This was in Piedmont, Calhoun County, Alabama,.
My grandparents, Ruth Rutherford and Albert Satterfield, were married on 10/25/24. The bridesmaid was Miss Louise Towle. Ruth named her daugher (my mom) Louise.
This was also in Piedmont.
If you have an ancestor named Louise Towle or Hattie Turner, please E-mail me at Nimue_2k@yahoo.com.

Looking for an Inez Towle maiden name Lind whom is the grandaughter of Edward Lind. Lived in California. Inez was born in Alaska to Edward and Lillya Maria. She had a sister Victoria and a brother Fred. Edward Lind had children before marrying Lillya. These children remained in Alaska to have families of their own. My grandmother had said that her father wanted to take her with him but she refused to go. She told my aunt that she had two little sisters. I do not believe that she knew of her half brother as he was born in California. Edward Lind lived at Kolmakovsky, Alaska in the 1910 census. His older children were attending school in another village at the time of the census. If anyone knows of this family please Email me at timgar@nushtel.com
Vt. Towles move to California

seeking information about 3 brothers from Corinth, Vt , sons of Brackett Towle and Nellie Richardson Towle who "moved to Calif when the country was new......but in 1849 they had a bit gold mine, a large mountain acreage , one or more hotels and forests, and a railroad." They were Ira Towle (b June 20, 1796), Anthony Towle II, (b Sept 4, 1783) and Brackett Towle jr, (b Apr 20, 1787). Ira may hae returned to Corinth; whereabouts of Anthony and Brackett jr is unknown. A sister, Nellie Towle Taplin ( b Oct 13, 1779) and husband Taplin also went to CA as did cousins Moses Heath and his wife, Ruth Collins Heath and their children. "Allen Towle, one of the (Towle) family, became a millionaire and was the founder and one-time owner of Towle, California."
