This is Wayne Benson (our Ancestry membership is in my wife's name.
My third great-grandfather was a John Vaught. He lived in Muhlenburg County, but moved to Illinois in about 1829. The Vaughts moved to Kentucky (John and his father John and families)from Pennsylvania. My 3rd ggfather did have slaves according to family tradition, but was forced by law to sell them when he moved north. Some of the family remained in KY and there could have been another John in a later generation, because the numbers don't work for my John to be your John. He had a son John, but he also moved to Illinois.
