Nicholas Watts (Sept 6, 1874-Aug. 15, 1954 Oak Grove, LA) born in Mississippi

Looking for the names of the parents of Estelle Walker Watts who was married to Nicholas Watts. I am their grandaughter. They lived most of their years in Oak Grove, LA, died there and are buried there. I have found connections for my grandfather, Nicholas Watts, but not for my grandmother. Any ideas where to start looking. All the family older than I (I am 69) have passed away so we have no one to ask.
Many thanks, Virginia Chrispen

I'm not sure how this message board works--I'll try again to respond. For some reason, it would not accept an earlier message with essentially the same content. I will gladly share with you what I have on Harry L. Watts' family but I think it is too much to share on this site. I'd really prefer to discuss with you by phone or email what I have to determine how much you want. I will call you if you will send me your phone number or email address to me at my email address: wynemam@bellsouth.net (all lower case).
Kathie, several years ago someone wrote me about Wiley Wesley Watts' relation to my Watts line. I was able to trace Wiley's ancestry back to John and Judith (?) Watts (my Watts line). I have completed the first volume of the descendants of John and Judith which includes Wiley. If you are interested, please contact me at wynemam@bellsouth.net--I prefer to do most my corresponding off the message board.

The summary of data I have follows, using the numbering system I use.

1 John Watts
+Judith (?)

12 Thomas Watts
+Elizabeth Lott

128 George Watts
+Rhoda Lott Wiggins (grand-d/o John & Judith)

128-2 Bartlett Sam Watts
+Manerva/Minnie Coulter
+Mrs. Mary Ann Buckley
+Pricilla (?)
I know nothing about a Dr. Harrold Lynnwood Watss, but do have some data on Harry L. Watts' family.

Some of the information that I have on Dr. Harry L. Watts' family in Brookhaven, MS, matches yours, and some does not. For instance, the census records (1910-1930)and obituaries of Harry and his wife show two children both daughters. [Martin] Van Buren Watts was Harry's father rather than his grandfather; Harry's grandfather Watts was Reuben Watts [Jr.].

I am related to Harry L. Watts (2nd cousins 3 times removed) through my 2-greatgrandmother Martha Amanda (Watts) Watts. I do not have that much data about Harry L. Watts other than that which I found in his obituary and census records, but I do have some interesting information on his ancestors. In fact, I have just finished a Watts book on the descendants of the first three children of John and Judith (?) Watts. Harry was a descendant of their son Thomas as was my Martha Amanda. If you would like the data I have or would like to talk about about the ancestors of Harry L. Watts, please write me at wynemam@bellsouth.net.
I prefer to correspond off the message board.

Wynema McGrew
The above was my grandfather and I'm trying to research his family - an extremely difficult task given that my father knows practically nothing and there's no one left to ask. All I DO know is that my grandmother's name was Elizabeth Pickin and the two had three children (one of whom is my father), also that my grandfather was in the regular navy then the merchant navy and that he then went on to work for the post office. I also believe that he had a sister called Lilly (Lillian) and an uncle called Albert.

Any help much appreciated.

Best,

Jenny

Bit of history on the Watts Family--Worth Phillips Watts 1902-1944

DIARY OF ILLNESS OF WORTH WATTS
The following is a letter written by my great-grandmother Norah Phillips Watts, to her sister-in-law Kittie Watts Gaylord, letting her know of the events leading up to the death of Norah’s only child, Worth. Worth died in Portland, Oregon, April 6, 1944, at the age of 42, leaving 5 children. The children were Wanda, Jordan, Dale, Freda and Curtiss. Bessie Yoder Watts worked very hard to finish raising the children, and “went to be with Daddy” 48 years later, never having remarried. I’m very grateful to the cousin who sent a copy of this letter to our family, since we didn’t know exactly what had happened. My father was the “spunky” Curtiss, who was 3½ when his father died, and did not remember what all had happened. It is heart-breaking to read this but is invaluable in understanding my grandmother Bessie’s life. It’s a shame that antibiotics were not as effective then as they are now.

Uncle Chance who is mentioned is married to Norah’s sister Grace Phillips Rogers. Emory and Genevieve are their children. Mrs. Yoder is Bessie's Mother, Zua Skeels Yoder.

Laurie Watts Dyche, proud to have Worth & Bessie as my grandparents
__________________________________________________________________________
May 2nd 1944

Dear Sister Kitt

Have rec’d so many good letters from you and now am going to try to write you a sort of a diary or day by day history of Worth’s illness. Between Bessie & I we have most of it in our minds. It has been a tragical time for me and it seemed part of the time as tho we were under a cloud of bad luck. But we thank God it was no worse, but how we miss Worth. I can’t yet realize it. I try to keep up before Bessie & often go in her room where she is in bed just off mine & find her crying. She is gaining slowly but still in bed most of the time. She was all run down & weak & nervous from trying to keep things going at home & going to the hospital every day (with my help). I thought she would naturally be more comfort to Worth than I would, could wait on him better & after his eyes went, feed him generally his supper, so I stayed home & got some of the meals & took care of the youngsters and some of the time only went once or twice a week. It was so pitiful to see him lying there and not knowing we were there until we spoke to him. It was so hard to talk cheery, but B was fine she helped shave or did it herself, cleaned his nails and kept him looking nice.

Last Oct Worth had work done on his teeth and had one pulled which came out very hard and the cavity was so slow in healing, it pained him & hurt to eat and he was about sick with it for two weeks or more and had to keep going back for dressings. Then it seems as though he had a bad sore throat & colds & felt bad so much of the time, but he kept on working most of the time, went when he did not feel able lots of times.

He had several different jobs in the shipyards and only a few weeks before he had to quit he got the work that he was fitted for (mostly desk work) of Draughtsman, lots of blueprint & he worked day time while before he was on nightshift and swingshift, going out cold nights in the cold and standing around waiting for busses & trolleys. More pay of course on night work.

On Jan 17th his 42 birthday, though really on Sunday 16th because children could all be home, B. had a birthday dinner for him and he remarked at the table that he ached & felt like he was getting the flu. He was never very good about going to a Dr., said he could wear it out & so he worked some, stayed in bed some & finally gave up after trying to work & coming home before the day was over he decided to see a Dr. & went & they gave him a thorough going over (Dr. here in St. Johns) & scared us all about possibility of TB. This was in Feb & he was worse so called Dr to the house he still thought TB and in a few days or soon arranged for him to go to TB hospital & have a test made. He got up & dressed after being in bed most of the time & B. took him up there. They found no sign of TB but he stayed in bed about a week waiting for Dr. Palmer to get the report. Everything takes so long in these times.

About this time Genevieve kept her Dad posted by long distance how Worth was & finally on May 18, Friday, Chance & Emery came down with their car to see him. We all realized by this time he was very sick and Chance got the Dr on the move (though the Dr had already suggested he go to the hospital). Worth hated to go and said in the morning when we knew C. was coming that he would have him in the hospital before night, hard to get into some of them but Dr. Palmer got him a bed with 4 other men & Dr. Palmer said of Chance “you are kind of man that wants to get things done yesterday” so about 6 PM W. got up again & we bundled him up & he sat in back seat with Uncle C. & Emery drove & B. in front seat & he went to hospital. He had already said one eye was gone but I thought it must be only something temporary. How I hated to see him leave & yet I knew he should go. That night they had another Dr,, Dr. Suritti (sp?) an old friend we had known in Weston & Athena who is in Portland has been for several years & they went over him again thought of typhoid fever as all this time I neglected to say he had so much temperature, but Dr. P. and his (?) (this was Feb 18th) and I think the hospital Dr. concluded it was ulcer on the heart. They gave him some of the new war medicines which are helping save so many men in this war, & we felt encouraged & thought he was better, but Dr. P. was not satisfied with results. He had blood transfusions & Worth said his arms were sore from so many shots in his arms. He was finally put in a room by himself because there was too much confusion with so many. He was in Emanuel Hosp. 11 days & then Dr. P. called a heart specialist, one of the best in the city who had saved several bad cases & is an instructor in the Medical School. Dr. Osgood came & went over Worth & said blood clot on the heart, thought he could cure him, but wanted him moved to Providence Hosp. nearer his school & where he lived so he could see him every day. So Worth got
up again and went in Taxi with B. to this hospital. This was on Feb. 29th, he walked into the hospital to the elevator. This was on Tuesday P.M.

Providence is a fine quite new hospital, very large & (?). The newest in the city & Catholic but I now have more regard for the Catholics than I ever had before. They were so kind to Worth & to all of us. But everyone loved Worth & respected him when they knew him.

The next Sunday eve about 8 P.M. Worth’s other eye went, and how awful it seemed. Dr. told him it might be only temporary, but this seemed the awfulest thing for him to suffer and the nurse said he seemed so depressed. Who wouldn’t be? He remarked to B. that he was discouraged about his eyes, poor kid.

You see the Dr. was trying to dissolve this clot & particles as I understand it, broke away & were in the blood stream which was poisoned & finally paralyzed the brain & one side, the right, became paralyzed. But before he got so bad it bothered him to talk, hard to understand him too. He would try to say something and hesitate for words and he would not talk, tho the Dr. said if he would only talk, & I told Worth what he said (trying to brace him up) & he said “there wasn’t much to talk about” it seems to me he was a martyr. B. came home one night and said he wouldn’t try to talk to her, but I (?) he was unconscious so much , and that he did not suffer so much any of the time (bodily) but his poor body was wracked with the heart working so hard it seemed to pound from head to foot.

Bessie started over with the Ford Coupe on Sunday eve, March 26,, Felt’s birthday, about 3:30 & was struck on the side of the car by a driver going too fast thru the intersection. B. was just a little bit slow getting thru & he was speeding. Threw her out on the pavement, cut a bad gash in her head, several cuts but one bad one. Was unconscious at first & Dr. Palmer was afraid of concussion. She was taken to Emanuel (where Worth had been) in ambulance & called Dr. Palmer. This is the same hospital I was in twice & quite near home, nearer a good deal than Providence. So about nine P.M. the man next door came to tell me she was not seriously hurt. We have no phone, tried to get one after W. sick, but couldn’t.

This was another jolt for me. Guess we, Wanda & I, got the kiddies off for school before she left and about noon on Monday B’s mother came, a lovely woman (such a Christian & so patient). Edna the next door neighbor was so good with phone & car. A teacher had called B’s sister & her mother came right away. Mrs. Yoder has been here ever since, so March 27, Monday, I went to the hospital & told Worth B. couldn’t come that day. He did not ask any questions or seem disturbed. I fed him & Edna came from school & we drove to Emanuel to see B. but couldn’t see her as they were taking Xrays, but we left notes. On Tuesday the 28th I went again to hospital. Worth ate a good supper and the last he ever said to me was that “I got along first rate feeding him”. He wanted to say something nice. Did not seem to wonder about B. not being there & seemed to want to rest after his meal so about 6 P.M. I left for downtown. On my way home I met Gen & we ate together before I came home.

Then Wednesday the 29th in the A.M. Curtiss the baby got spunky because his grandmothers wanted him to go to toilet before she took him down to the bus station to meet one of B’s sisters ho was coming. I spanked him a little & he went upstairs & hid in a clothes closet & we hunted in the same closet about 3 different times & finally I went to Fire & Police stations & had them hunt for him with a car. Neighbors were helping (station is close by the house) when one of the neighbors & I were walking back, upstairs in the front window was Curtiss calmly looking out the window but before anyone got upstairs again he hid again so we let him stay there. But his little face looked good to me. Doesn’t it look like a trick that his granddad might have done in his early days? You may laugh but it was no laughing matter to me. He had been having trouble about telling anyone but Bessie & consequently there was soiled clothes sometimes, and the two grandmothers were trying to save trouble. It made me late getting over to the hospital & when I got there nurses said Worth was worse & had been growing worse all day. They brought in his tray but he was too unconscious to eat. Tried to drink the milk out of tube, but too weak to draw hard enough to get any. The Dr. came about 6 P.M. and they moved him out to a sunroom where he was alone & that meant the end. He was in a ward with two other men. I had them telephone to Genevieve’s house and they came over, Jordan & Genevieve, and we stayed up all night with him. None of us slept very much. The Dr. said as they were moving him that he was unconscious and not suffering any pain and that it might be a few hours or a day, and he lived 8 days. Just working so hard to breathe it was terrible to stand, but he did not know. They fed him by arm twice and we put water in his mouth. He was bathed & bed changed & sponged off because he perspired so much. I stayed with him every minute until he went. Only slept a little nights & daytimes. B. has four sisters & they were all here at hospital & house & then to hospital to see B. & they kept it from her as Drs. were afraid to let her know. But she thought he must be worse & they finally gave her an opiate & told her.

It was heart-rending. They tried to make me come home, but I didn’t. They gave me a sleeping tablet once and said they would call me & I said I couldn’t get here if they did so they gave it up. So I bathed his face & hands & feet and could be with him even if he did not know it & I stood it fine but found out after it was over that I was pretty well worn out. B’s mother stayed with me several nights. Then I had to go ahead with everything here but went to the hospital and consulted about everything with B. Her sisters were wonderful ,one had a car. On Easter Day she came home in an ambulance but had to stay right in bed, couldn’t see Worth, couldn’t go to the funeral. On Easter two sisters took Dale & Freda to the parlor to see him & tried to explain it to them, thought they would always wonder if they did not. Uncle C. & Emery were down. Gen lives here in the city. Kenneth & wife came. The pallbearers were Emery & Kenneth Rogers, two of B’s brothers, also a cousin & Worth’s boss at the Shipyard. The music “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “God will Take Car of You” was sung by two music
club ladies. The sermon by our Methodist Minister, a young man who had called at both hospitals several times and at the house. His subject was Builders & Worth’s influence on his boys when teaching and it was not the number of years we lived but how. Ever so many have said what a beautiful or rather fine sermon it was. We found a lot in sight & quite close to where ours is on a slope facing the trees and river, had a metal vault same as Dr’s. So any beautiful flowers but no picture of the flowers this time and we have none of us been back. It is 15 miles & B. is not able to go & I will wait till when she can go.

B. has rec’d 950.00 dollars from the shipyard workers, also money left over from buying flowers from the different workers. Worth was a Marine (?) It is wonderful how they sent money while he was in hospital. $661 the first time & twice afterwards from the same source, but worth had always done his part in paying his share of such expenses.

But the expense never ends. Now it is paying storage on the car & getting it fixed & the hearing which is postponed until B. is able to appear. Uncle C. got a lawyer for us, so we are in hopes she can get her expenses back, but it will never bring back her lost chance of seeing Worth, tho he would not have known her.

Just one more accident. Will send a clipping about Freda who was hit by a car over on the street, but another thing to be thankful for that she was not killed. One shoulder bruised, no skin broken & an old spot on her knee that she had gotten a few days before falling downstairs painted up. When she came from hospital where they took her in an ambulance, Jordan with her , for the safety of the people who struck her, they weren’t to blame. B. was at Providence, hadn’t seen W. yet when phone call came that Freda was hurt & at St.Vincent’s Hospital so she got a taxi & went there but Freda was already home. Then on here and when she found out Freda was not seriously hurt she rushed back to Worth fearing he would miss her & then when she got to his bed she said she was afraid she was late, but he had not noticed it. This was after he lost his sight.

Now isn’t this a tragical affair & who ever heard of anything much more pitiful, but we are still thankful Bessie & Freda were not killed. Now this is a long story and hope it does not tire you, but know you folks above all would be anxious for particulars and I have lived it all over again in telling you but it has done me good to tell you. Don’t know or haven’t talked anything about what we will do. Bessie said she laid awake nights thinking how she can raise the 3 youngsters without Worth.

But God will take care of us I am sure if we do our best.

(at top of page) B. said when he was so bad, “Why did he have to suffer all this when he never did a wrong thing in his life”. B’s sister Norah took Curtiss home with her. He has had chicken pox but not bad, all OK now.

Jordan was 17 yesterday, Wanda is 18 and working. Bessie may go to teaching.

I went to Dr. Steinmetz yesterday and had a checkup but he did not seem to think I had much wrong with me. Gave me a tonic & digestive medicine & I feel better already. Didn’t seem to think my heart was bad. Had a letter from Georgia Webb the other day.

One of our cards had this lovely poem. Please return it. Kitt, perhaps you have seen it before. I think it is fine.

Thank Lora & Helen for their remembrance to me. And I thank you & John for the beautiful flowers again. I hope you are both well and you have each other.

How we miss our loved ones when we need their help so much, something nearly every day that we want advice about. I don’t feel so much like doing things that I have to do because B. can’t do it and I have to, but I try to cut out self pity and try to think of others that need my help. I feel what I do for them is doing for Worth.

Lovingly, Norah
I don't have any connection to this family but found this while doing other research. I am posting hundreds of these “blurbs” because I believe it helps to see our ancestors as people rather than just names and dates and, in some cases, it helps to place where our ancestors were during a certain period of time.

It is from the April 6, 1901 issue of the Rockland-Maine Courier-Gazette in a column entitled "This Week Twenty-Five Years Ago." It It covers "happenings" for Rockland vicinity in "the week ending April 6, 1876."

"Archibald Watts well known for many years as a stage driver between Rockland and St. George, was thrown from a vehicle and injured so badly that he died a few days later."

Hi Sarah: I have a bunch of the local vital records and looked this up for you. Here is what I have typed up so far. I have the whole "history" of the family from Eaton's Annals of Warren. Do you have access to that? If not, I'll type it up for you - it goes to the Scotch-Emigrant William who came to this country in 1719.

In the Vital Records of Union, Maine:

p. 124 – Family – Records – Book 2

Mr. and Mrs. Bently Watts & Grace M. Gould family
Gertie M., b. Dec 28, 1887
Aloila E., b. May 16, 1889

p. 131 – Delayed Records of Birth

1890, December 13
Rilla Augusta Watts, dau and 4th child of Bentley M. Watts, laborer, b. Warren, Maine; and Grace M. Gould, b. Union, Maine, residents of Warren, Maine; reported by Mrs. Grace M. Watts Bubar, RFD 2, Farmington, ME., mother.

p. 138 – Delayed Records of Birth

1880, April 13
Bancroft Alden, son and 2nd child of Fred A. Alden, farmer, b. Union, Me., and Emeline Watts, b. St. George, Me; reported by Lilian Alden, cousin

p. 146 – Delayed Records of Birth

1890, December 13th
Rilla Augusta Watts, dau and 4th child of Bentley M. Watts and Grace M. Gould

p. 237 – Marriage Intentions, Certificates and Marriages 1837-1864

Appleton, Maine – July 7, 1861 Wm R.C. Clark and Miss Linda M.
Thanks Hilary. I have put together a tree based on Isaac Watts (the father) and Isaac Watts (hymnwriter) wills. The Thomas Watts will was new to me, so will try to add details from that. Thanks for that.

So, if Thomas Watts didn't have any children, the Watts name could only be carried down from Isaac's brother Enoch or Richard (all other siblings were female). Otherwise we are looking for siblings of Isaac Watts the father, and work down from there. I realise that this is a different problem from yours though, Hilary.

Hi Lyndon
I typed "will of Isaac Watts" into google and got the will of Isaac Watts senior (father of hymnwriter), but forgot to note the webpage. He refers to his grandchildren by his son Thomas: Thomas Watts and Mary Chaldecott, wife of John Chaldecott. The date of the will is 1735, so I believe this Mary and John Chaldecott are the parents of my ancestor John Chaldecott2 and his wife, Mary Groves. John Chaldecott2 is definitely the nephew mentioned in the will of Thomas Watts of Chichester, nephew of Isaac Watts hymnwriter. Thomas Watts of Chichester evidently had no children of his own as none are mentioned in his will. John Chaldecott2 had several children: Mary (married Mr. Street), Anna (believed unmarried), Thomas (goldsmith), Elizabeth who married Thomas Sharp or Sharpe who is my next ancestor, John (farmer), Watts (cutler), Isaac (surgeon in Portsmouth), Barns or Barnes (draper) and Stephen. I think Mary Street and Stephen must have died before 1786 when John Chaldecott2 made his will as they are not mentioned in it.

According to my family tree (which is not 100% accurate), my ancestor Elizabeth Sharp (nee Chaldecott)'s children were William, James, Richard, Charles, Anna and George. My next ancestor was Richard Sharp who married Mary Comley. His daughter Katharine Rosa (known as Rosa) married my Great-great grandfather Alfred Walden. His other children were Richard, Risdon, Mary, Anne, Thomas, Granville, Spencer and Henry.

Hi Gary,
Thanks for the response. From the information you gave me it does not appear to be the same family. My Grandfather died at the age of 77 and I can find no record of either a John or Samuel although I may not have all the children. James Arthur died in 1958 at the age of 77 living just off Surrey Square which is both in Newington and Camberwell.

Regards
Colin

I am doing research for my Husband's family tree. His mother was born Carol Anne Watts, to Ralph Neil Watts, and Thelma( do not know surname). Ralph's Parents were Neil E.Watts B.June 7,1892-d. Dec. 27,1928. Married to Fannie Latiecia B. Feb. 21, 1896-d. 1980.

I am curious of both Neil's and Fannie's parents. I am not certain if they might be connected to either of yours or not. Ralph and Thelma last lived in Dunbarton New Hampshire. Thelma passed in a head on collision and was pronounced dead at Concord Hospital in 1997. Ralph passed away after sustaining injuries in an another accident after being determined with Alzheimer Disease in 1999, I want to say it was in December of 99 before Christmas, for I know it was after mine and my husbands wedding in Sept. 99.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Amanda Morasse
