I have just found a reference to "abstracts from church records, wills, and Bible records concerning the Withers families of Virginia.". This is in the Pennsylvania Historical Society located in Philadelphia.

Thomas Withers was my g.g.g. grandfather who was a landowner in Radnage, Bucks. He died on 1 January 1843 aged 63 yrs.

I have been unable to go any further back unfortunately, and would love to be able to trace Thomas's birth. It is believed he wasn't born in Bucks, but may have been of Palatine origin.

He was listed in will of my gg-grandfather Joseph Noel, born June 1799 place unknown and died Sep.1870 in Noble County, Indiana. His wife's name was MaryAnn (maiden name unknown) Was MaryAnn a Withers? They may have been married in Ohio about 1844. I have recently found a letter written by JG WITHERS in SHELBYVILLE KY l829 to his nephew ADDISON L WITHERS(b 1804) living in ALEXANDRIA DC. The latter is so listed in the 1830 census. According to a published bio and family history, Addison's parents were LEWIS WITHERS and FRANCES JENNINGS(m 1802)living in FAUQUIER CO VA. The letter mentions another uncle THOMAS (?) WITHERS in PIKE CO IN. Other relatives mentioned are ELIZABETH MOUNT also in PIKE CO and WILLIAM L WITHERS in VINCENNES IN.
Based on internet pages, I can place all these other Withers in the MATHEW KEENE WITHERS family but not my Lewis Withers. The letter indicates they are related but I have not been able to find that connection. The only other mentions of Lewis and Frances is on LDS Family Search with no source/no submitter. This is as far back as I can trace my maternal line and I would love to have more information and especially pictures of any of the above people. We have no family photos because Byrdie Dale (Bertha) Williams and her husband Louis Vancil abandonded their daughter Bessie Vancil who is my great grandmother. We have only recently figured out who her birth parents were.

Has anyone heard that James H Withers born about 1780 could possibly have been born in Benton Michigan?? I was searching Michigan history and it did not become an actual state until 1837. However Congress aloud that area of territory to be divided into 5 states in 1787 one of those states being Michigan. I was just wondering if anyone was putting that same info together and maybe wondering if James H Wither, father of James T Withers, was born somewhere else. I have also done some research regarding Frank Withers and Sara Sperril, the possible parents of James H Withers. I have searched and searched and have not found another surname of Sperril anywhere. Anyone have any helpful info??

Cornelius was a machinist for the C.O. railroad. He was born 1863 in Muskingum County, and was the only child of Jacob and Amanda Withers to have moved from the area and the time frame would have been sometime after 1880. He married a woman named Louise, and had two sons I can document. The first was Oliver James Withers, who was a veteran of WWI. The second was Walter C. Withers, who appeared to have only lived eleven years and died in 1911.

Oliver James was born in 1889 and died in 1935, so he didn't live a long life, either. The parents outlived both of their children. I don't know if Oliver ever married. His last known address was that of the home at RFD 4 Columbus, Ohio.

I would love to know any of the particulars of their lives, if anyone has knowledge of them. Thanks.

Robert L. Withers--Texas--USAAF Pilot--WW-II

I am researching the military career of several persons who were my father's bomber squadron mates during WW-II. Robert L. Withers was with the 533rd Bomb Squadron of the 381st Bomb Group based at Ridgewell, Essex, England in the summer of 1943.

Mr. Withers was probably born in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas in December 1919, but he enlisted in the Army Air forces cadet program at Dallas in January 1942, and stated his residence was in Jeff Davis County.

Mr. Withers was a lead B-17 pilot in his squadron and was promoted to Captain in September, 1943. On 9 Octboer, 1943 his plane went missing over the North Sea and vanished without a trace.

I would like to make contact with a relative or other person having knowledge of Captain Withers. In lieu of that, I would like to know if someone can look up the newspaper articles that likely were written shortly after Capt. Withers aircraft was lost in October, 1943.

Hi All,
I am searching for two things. Actual descendants of Capt. John Withers, or his siblings, and real documents to back it up.

The good Captain seems to have some problems. He has more birthdates and birthplaces then can be counted. The man also has a different wife for every day of the year. All of them seemed to be named Hannah.

I have seen many variations of the Withers genealogy, but nobody seems to want to fork up the documents. While I could take the two hour drive out to Lancaster and fetch the court papers, I am guessing that at least "x" percent of the genealogy is based on hearsay.

I have spent too many years stuffing the notes on some of my other lines tight with documentation, and leaving out facts that I couldn't find something for. It is now time for me to do my Withers line, and I am questioning just how straight it is.

It is clear to me that too much has been taken for granted on this line. I am interested in working with any descendant interested in finding out just what the truth really is.

Too all others, I wish you the best in your genealogical endeavors, whatever and wherever they may be.

I've also located the gravesite of Robert Alexander, Robert Withers's father-in-law, who was the son of the founder of what would become Washington & Lee University. Throughout the Massachusetts jurisdiction the pillory was in use. In 1671 one Mr. Thomas Withers for "surriptisiously endeavoring to prevent the Providence of God by putting in several votes for himself as an officer at a town meeting" was ordered to stand two hours in the pillory at York, Maine. Shortly after (for he was an ingenious rogue) he was similarly punished for "an irregular way of contribution," for putting large sums of money into the contribution box in meeting to induce others to give largely, and then again "surriptisiously" taking his gift back again.

LaMar Thompson Withers, 79, passed away in the company of his beloved wife Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born in Draper, Utah December 28, 1925 to Richard Thomas Withers and Annie Clara Thompson. Raised in Draper, Utah, he resided in Salt Lake Valley all of his life. He married Elizabeth Burrows January 4, 1946, nearly 60 years ago. He loved traveling, hunting, fishing, boating, camping with friends and family, and wintering in Quartzite, AZ. LaMar was a very talented woodworker making many beautiful clocks that he freely gave away to his family and friends. He lived life to the fullest, was a hard worker, served others, and was a good friend. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grand children and they loved him. He is survived by his loving wife, his three children, Sheila (John) Goostrey of Boise, Idaho; Michael Withers of Las Vegas, Nevada; Debra (Jeff) Brown of Brigham City, Utah; ten grandchildren and six great-grand children. He is also survived by eight brothers and sisters: Calvin (Ruby) Withers, Gordon (Verda) Withers, Daryl Withers, Dona Peterson, Melvin Withers, Ralph (Marian) Withers, Darlene Stansfield, and Iretta (Bart) Thaxton and brother-in-law Richard (Deloris) Burrows. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Dorothy Burrows, sisters-in-law Kathleen Withers, Joyce Withers, Beverly Withers, brothers-in-law Bruce Peterson, Roy Stansfield, and grandson David Mark Goostrey. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 26, 2005 at 11 AM at the Crescent 16th Ward, 275 East 10600 South. Friends may call Sunday evening from 6 to 8 PM at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, and at the church Monday one hour prior to services. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery.

Wilma J. Leach, 77, of Terre Haute died at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, in Provena Covenant Hospital in Urbana, Ill.

She was a homemaker. She was born March 18, 1928, in Knightsville to Charles Withers and Clysta Aker. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, George Leach, whom she married Sept. 9, 1947; two daughters, Vicky Zentko and Debby Howard; one sister, Wanda Pell; two brothers, Jack Withers and Jim Withers; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday in First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Larry Mathias officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home.

Steel/e Withers in Jefferson/Oldham Cos, KY 1820-1830s

I have two sisters, Elizabeth and Frances Jane Steel/e, born in Kentucky about 1813 and 1820. Both married Shake brothers, and the Shakes lived in Oldham, County. According to the story passed down, the Steel/e father died and his widow married a man named Withers, by whom she had two sons before she died. Withers then sold the farm/plantation, pocketed the money and moved on with his two sons, leaving the Steel/e girls to fend for themselves. They moved in with an "Aunt Coonrody" (could be Conrad etc) and her husband, three children, and two old maids. The Steel/e girls came down with typhoid, while the man and the three children contracted cholera and died. The shock killed the "aunt", leaving the two girls and the two old maids--and five corpses in the house at one time. The girls married in the 1830s.

If any of you know anything that might help in identifying the family to which these girls belonged I will greatly appreciate hearing from you.

He died in 1902 and she in 1931. They are both buried in the Johnson City Masonic Cemetery in Johnson City, Blanco County, TX. I have census and cemetery info. Amongst those sailing with Governor John WHITE to Roanoke in 1587 is a William WYHTERS. In the past, I have read many speculations that the settlers at Roanoke were fromthe West Country. But I have recently discovered that more than a few of the Lost Colonists seem to have been from the parish of St. Clement Danes, Westminster, London.

As I have continued to compare the Lost Colonist list with extant parish lists, I have found a record for:

WILLIAM WYTHERS (Chr 25 MAR 1574 - St Michael Cornhill, London, London, England)

William WYTHERS of the Lost Colony is listed amongst the children making the voyage. But there seem to be no OTHER WITHERS colonists aboard this voyage. While it is certainly possible that William WYTHERS might be traveling with a remarried mother, it seems more likely that at age 13 he is setting out on a voyage unaccompanied by parents.

My furhter guess is that we will find that WITHERS who come to Virginia is subsequent voyages may have had this lad in mind!

I am trying to locate the cemetery where my uncle George Withers, his wife and daughter are buried. The cemetery is in the Fort Worth, TX area where they had a family plot. His wife (my aunt) was Flora "Dodie" Perkins Withers. The daughter's name is Barbara, who was born about 1927 and died at the age of 18 in a horseback accident in Texas. Flora was born in 1900 in Lufkin, TX and died in 1987 in California. George was born in 1903 in Kansas and his father was from England. I have no information on when he died or where. There is one living daughter, Carolyn, who I have no contact information for. I believe that she was born about 1938.
I know that they are buried in a cemetery in the Fort Worth area and that's it. If anyone has any information to share I would very much appreciate it if you could contact me.

BAREHEADED IN THE COLD.

Persons near the Junction at Main and Delaware streets
this morning observed a heavily overcoated man walking
erect and briskly, carrying a derby in his right hand and
nothing on his head. He has been seen hatless many
times on the downtown streets, but not on so cold a
morning as this.

However, he did put his hat on when his name was
asked for, refusing to take it off and further refusing to
tell the why of his hatless walks.

He and Guy M. WITHERS, Kansas City manager of the
Illinois Life Insurance Company, are the only known
downtown adherents of the non-hat. But WITHERS
wears his hat on cold days. And he has more hair than
his contemporary, too.

WILLIAM ROBERT WITHERS, 67, of Abiquiu died Jan. 19, 2004. He was born in Wichita, Kans. He lived in the Chama River Valley for many years. He had a lifelong interest in design and construction. As a young man he learned carpentry and wove that knowledge, plus a heightened sense of design, into his career in architectural design. Many in the Santa Fe area benefited from his keen eye for detail and his tireless research on every aspect of each project he undertook. He studied English and American Literature, architecture and Spanish, becoming fluent through his travels in Mexico and living and working with the people of New Mexico, which he loved. He was a writer and composed prose and poetry. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert R. Withers. He is survived by his mother, Mary S. Withers; and sister, Barbara Withers. Arrangements were under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service, 984-8600.
