I am trying to document the Rev. War service of John STEARNS who was born and died in Tolland, CT but lived in Wilbraham, MA. He married Elizabeth Willis (Wills). I believe he might have served from Wilbraham. I would appreciate any help. Thank you , Barbara

Your principal first-look resource will be the 17-volume _Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War_.

The volumes are arranged alphabetically by surname, first name.

This was compiled by the Massachusetts State Archives from available service records. It includes militia entries as well as Continentals and State Troops.

Major libraries have the volumes, and you should be able to borrow the right volume for 'Stearns' and 'Sterns' by inter-library loan.

Or if your local library subscribes to Ancestry.com you can use that service to search for and look at images of the pages from the above book.

The books are also being posted here, I am not sure how far they have gotten:

Do you have any info on the John Stearns above. My John Stearns lived in Adison county, vt and married Sarah Washburn. He is supposed to have died in 1823. There is another John Stearns who fought in the Revolution and died in 1847. His wife is Ruth. This is not him. My John Stearns's wife Sarah was granted pension. A letter stating so was written in 1905. See http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=st...; for a copy.
I was also wondering if his Father Samual Stearns served.

There are many listed with his name but didn't find a man married to a Sarah. Also didn't find a Samual Stearns. This doesn'n prove he didn't serve--just that he hasn't been submitted for membership.
