Surnames: Kozbial, Kozbelt, Kozbiel, Kozbel, Kozel, etc.
Trying to establish if the names Kozbial and Kozbiel are related? My name was originally spelled Kozbial (it's now Kozbelt) and has roots in Wadowice, Poland and Spisska Nova Ves, Slovakia. In addition and equally important, would like to find out origins of the Kozbial (Kozbiel) name, how old its usage is, where in Poland and/or Slovakia it originated and if there are any past Slavic historic figures (noted personalities) who shared the Kozbial surname?
Thank you in advance for any and all responses.
Jim Kozbelt

Katarzyna Kozbiel, What information do you have showing a connection between surnames Kozbiel and Kozbial? I am primarily interested in the history of Kozbial; but I am interested in both versions, their relationship to each other, the respective meanings of Kozbial and Kozbiel and how long the names have been in existence in Slovakia and Poland... and anywhere else in Europe. Thank you in advance for information you can share.

Hello James
I don't think there is a link between the last names Kozbial and Kozbiel. Personally I'm finding it hard to trace any family in north america mainly due to the name change upon immigration to US/Canada which was widely practiced. On top of that many polish last names have dropped accents or letters upon arrival to US/Canada. For example, my real last name is Koźbiel but the slash on the "z" was dropped due to the fact that the letter is not present in English. Other variations of the last name Kozbiel could be Koźbieł (a slash through the "L" indicating the letter pronounced as a "w" would be in english). No relation between the last names Koźbiel and Koźbieł, by the way. My family comes from the NE Poland and has roots in the Jadzwing tribes of Poland/Belorus. My grandfather told me that the Jadzwing tribes had characteristic last names all ending in the letter "L", another example would be Wrobel (slash on the letter "o" indicating a sound "oo"or "u". There are a lot of families with my last name in the region around the city Bialystok, Poland. My grandfather's family is from the village of Jatwieź Duża near Bialystok, the cemetery there has many members with the last name Koźbiel. Hope this helped.
