My gg-aunt's husband John CAIN, b. 1813 Codicote, Hertford, d. about 1889 Stevenage, Hertford was listed in the 1861 Census and 1871 Census as Veterinary Surgeon in Stevenage, Hertford. In the 1881 Census he is listed as retired Veterinary Surgeon. He married Betsy PAGE in 1854, Royston, Hertford

If he was registered (as he had to be at that time) the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons will have a record. I have yet to find a copy of the Veterinary Register on shelves at a library, but the RCVS archivist was very helpful by email some time back (two of my great-grandfathers were vets). I was very lucky: one went to India and I've been able to read his testimonials from his application to join the East India Company from the 1830s, in the original.

I was wondering if you ever enquired about any qualifications John Cain had?

I have him in my extended tree - he is cousin to my 2x Great Grandfather Thomas Cain who married Eliza Filler. Their common grandparents are James Cain and Susannah Stanton who married in 1774 in Luton.

No, I never got around to inquiring about his qualifications. I got distracted by receiving a lot of information on another line and sort of forgot about John Cain.

I don't have anything further back on his line except for his parents William Cain and Elizabeth Inns. Their children were Stephen, Edward (mar. Mary Ann Sharp), Mary, Mary Ann, Susanna, John, Fanny (mar. George Barnwell), Thomas (mar. Hannah Millerd, Eliza Filler and Caroline ?), Edward (mar. Eliza McClunan), Ann, and Eliza.

Sorry for the delay in replying, work and also I was checking my files to respond to you.

I’d be interested to know where you got some of the information as I may be missing some of the children.

William Cain and Elizabeth (nee Inns) baptised the following children in Codicote Church, Mary on 5th September, 1809, Susannah on 31st May 1812, John on 28th November, 1813, Thomas on 24 December, 1815, Edward on 25th January, 1818, Eliza on 12th August, 1821 and James on 16th February, 1824. Of these three died very young and were buried in Codicote churchyard, Susannah on 31st May, 1813, Eliza on 30th September, 1821 and Mary on 20th May, 1824.

I also have a note from the Hertfordshire Burial Records that there was a William who was buried 22nd April, 1807, so presumably their eldest child.

I’m curious about your extra names – Stephen, another Edward who married Mary Ann Sharp? Mary Ann and Fanny. It would be strange if a first child Edward grew to adulthood and yet they had a second child with the same name, I’ve only ever come across this when the first one died and the second was named after him.

William Cain’s parents were James Cain and Susannah Stanton of Luton. They had other children including Thomas who married Elizabeth Grey. This couple had a number of children including Thomas born 1802 in Codicote. It was this Thomas, cousin to the one you mention as having three marriages, who married Eliza Filler. This is my direct line.

Thank you for the new (to me) information on birth of James, and burials of Susannah, Eliza & Mary.

It makes sense that William who was buried 1807 was their eldest child since they were married 1805.

The births of Stephen, Edward (mar. Mary Ann Sharp), Mary Ann & Fanny I got from the LDS IGI listing, but have not looked at the film. It is quite possible that I have attached them to the wrong family.

I'm glad we could help each other out Sheila, those names you mention certainly fit in with the dates after the marriage of the parents and slot in between those others that I had, but how strange that they should baptise some in Codicote and others in Lilley. Could they have been keeping her family happy by going home for just about every other birth? or have we mixed up two different families?

A problem which is going to take more investigation I can see.
