I once read that only does who descend from an Italian recognized as a noble by the late Kingdom of Italy (1866-1946) may rightfully use the title. What do you think? What about nobles of former Italian States which did not recognized the King of Sardinia as King of Italy, such as the famous Black Nobility of the Papal States???

It is interesting to make that point. Our family is listed in the Italian Genealogical Society as nobles, but we originated in Ferrara and later moved a branch to Montecelio (circa 1200). Per the Society, our branch (the ones who moved) were granted title by the King, but I am uncertain which King would have done so. The branch I am descended from was part of the Kingdom of Naples, and we retained title until WWII.

Hard to really say- back then, who knows?

You might want to check to see which families support/maintain the Livres d'Oro, the ongoing records of Italian nobility.

My family on my dad's side is nobility I guess. My GG-Grandpa was the Duke of Tuscuny.

My father's family are old nobility from Mantova and my father has the certificate etc from the govnt.

Does anybody know of the Amati-Buonaccorsi name outside of Italy? I only seem to find one or the other.

This is an interesting point. Regardless of whether or not the Kingdom of Italy recognised the numerous preceding houses and families of Italian nobility, I believe that descendants from those noble houses or families still have a right to say that they are of noble descent.

That said, with the abolition of the Kingdom of Italy in 1946, surely all Italian nobility has also been abolished and therefore no claims can be made to land or titles as they do not exist anymore.

My grand father was a descendent of Sicilian nobility. However, he and his two brothers never mention this fact to anyone not even their wives or children. The true story of our family tree was uncovered by accident year later, after their deaths. I had read that when Italian immigrant from noble families came to the United States they hide their heritage. The reason being that the nobility was so hated by the peasant class (especially in the south) that they feared social isolation or even blood revenge. I was curious if anyone had also heard of this fact. It does explain why some family have a hidden past.

I have heard similiar stories which my grandfather had told my father which had been relayed to him by his father. The whole "Blood revenge" is true not only with peasant but also with nobility fighting amongst themselves for total power and complete control. The story is that twin brothers with our last name were weary of the battle for money and power so they decided to leave, one came to the U.S./California and the other brother ended up deep into Mexico/Mexico City.
