On 2 August 1858, Archibald McLISTER (age 36, then resident of Whitby, Ontario, Canada) married Mary KILPATRICK (age 20, then resident of Prescott, Ontario) in Grenville County. The marriage was probably solemnized at the Presbyterian church in Prescott town. Archibald was born in Co Antrim, Ireland (sorry, no further information as to townland/parish), and his parents were Daniel & Mary.

I am connected to Archibald McLISTER only through marriage. Mary KILPATRICK was an elder sister of our great-grandfather, Robert Gordon KILPATRICK. The KILPATRICK family, headed up by father Samuel & mother Jane (nee McKAY) emigrated to Prescott sometime between Spring 1847 and Spring 1848, from Kilrea parish in Co Londonderry.

I've traced Archibald and Mary as late as 1880. In the 1880 US census (online at www.familysearch.org), the family consisted of:

- Charles McCLISTER, 11, At Home (born 23 April 1869 in Ohio, USA)
- Arthur McCLISTER, 9 (born 2 August 1870 in Ohio, USA)
- Sarah J. MC CLISTER, 4 (born 28 July 1895 in Ohio, USA)
- Minnie MC CLISTER, 1 (born in Ohio, USA)

The birth dates as given above are transcribed from a KILPATRICK family bible, except for Minnie, whose birth date is absent.

I would be interested in hearing from readers who are descended from the family outlined above. Sorry, I do not have any further information on the McLISTER origins in Ireland.

Our Archie McLister was born c1822 in County Antrim, so he was the contemporary of your James born in 1833. However, Archie's parents were Daniel & Mary, while James' were Hugh & Mary.
I didn't see any familiar names in your list which, yes, was much easier to read this time around ;-).
Of the two surnames, Kilpatrick is the primary one that I've been researching. Our gr-gr-aunt Mary Kilpatrick married into the McLister family, so I have not done any of Archie's ancestral lines.
McLister was/is not that common a surname in Ireland, and it is associated with such spelling variants as McAllister, McLester, McLyster, and so on. Most of these names occurred in County Antrim, with fewer numbers occurring in the other five counties comprising what is now Northern Ireland. When Archie McLister moved from Prescott, Ontario, Canada to Akron, Ohio in the U.S., his name became McClister.
If you know someone with the Griffith's Valuation Index (a tax roll of landlords & tenants, 1848-1864), you could ask for a listing of all McListers. Perhaps your Hugh will show up there. Another place to begin would be the index to the Tithe Applotments (earlier, c1828-1833), which was, essentially, a tax roll for the established Church for collecting tithes from land occupiers. I would suggest looking for McLister, McLester and McLyster first. If a Hugh pops up, either tax roll will indicate the county and the civil parish ... and these will lead you to the appropriate church records (and I would guess Presbyterian here). A word of caution, however ... not all church records survive that far back.
After trying for the McLister spelling variants, you might then try the McAllister variants: McCallister, McAllester, McAlister, and so on.

Hi there I'm a McLister from Ballycastle, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland. The McLister name derives from the name Lister not McLeister or McAllister, they infact came after the name McLister was created.

The "MC" actually means "son of" hence why its gone from Lister to McLister. McListers' originate from Torr, out near the Glens of Antrim on the North Coast and surrounding areas. My G-Grandfather's brother went to Ontario but I have no more information at the moment.

My husband is the great grandson of Archibald and Mary. His grand father is Samuel A McClister. His mother is the daughter of Samuel and Carrie McClister. of Salt Lake City Utah. Samuel was an conductor for the Denver and Rio Grand railroad. They had four children Blenda, Chaucey, Claude,and George. Do you know of any other relatives?
