Winbanks/Windebank etc to Australia

Surnames: Winbanks .. Windebank ..
We have a little mystery here ... John Winbanks turned up in Melbourne in 1856 where he had a son John Norman Winbanks (later another son David Henry Winbanks in 1859). He claims to have married their mother, Eliza Veourvance in Sydney in 1851 ... nope, they didn't. Eliza herself has claimed quite a number of surnames including White, Smith and Delarue (in various spellings) as well as the fanciful Veourvance - she's claimed to have been born in France and another time she claims to have been born in London.

Okay ... we suspect this John Winbanks may have been a convict and (so far successfully!) hiding his past - as, it seems, is she. John claims to have been born in both Liverpool and Hampshire in 1819. Can ANYONE help?

Are you researching this surname and a "John" disappeared around 1830 to 1850? Eliza couldn't write, so John probably couldn't either - so I now have come to the terms of taking absolutely no notice of the spelling of the surname. (Having had a Scottish Jennett turn up on a ship as "Janet" - yep, say it with a Scottish accent, and bet some English clerk thought it was "Janet" with a Scottish accent - "she'd be Jennett" said the father, "Right you are - Janet" says the clerk).

We are desperate to solve this 20 year mystery! Can you help at all?

Hi Kerryn
Just started on these Winbanks but see your message is 2 yrs old. Think it's same line -John Winbanks's son marrying Agnes Hall.Did Eliza Veurance the mystery lady marry again- James Spottiswood 1883, and what happened to the first John d 1877 perhaps there was an inquest ?
I've heard the Winbanks haven't yet been traced back to UK or anywhere but I will have a try.
