Hi Amy,
The only Wiliam Saffin I have is a Frank William Saffin who was born in Sth Australia in 1896 in Kensington. His father was Frank.
I doubt we are on the same tree
All the best in your research,

I think I have information that puts my William Saffin from Wiveliscombe. Thought Id try again as a few Saffins seem to be from here. Don't know anything other than was convicted in 25 mar 1826, have him born around 1809/10. He was then shipped to Australia as a convict for 14 years. Looked at the Wiveliscombe parish records and cant find a match. Familiar to anyone??

Hi Amylee 2631,

I am also descended from the SAFFINs of Somerset, though my folks never moved away from England!

I've researched the name for many years now, but I don't have any c. 1810 births/baptisms for a William SAFFIN. However, I do have a William SAFFIN bap 20 Apr 1806, Huish Champflower, Somerset, son of Thomas and Mary (of Wiveliscombe, according to the parish register). As ages at that time were often somewhat uncertain, this might be worth considering. Thomas and Mary were almost certainly the Thomas SAFFIN "of Wiveliscombe" and Mary BRAYENT (BRYANT) who married on 3 Sep 1803, Huish Champflower, witnesses: James WEBBER and Ann STONE. Banns were read for this marriage at Wiveliscombe, and state that Thomas was, in fact, a widower.

The above Thomas SAFFIN was buried at Huish Champflower in 1812, age 74, so was born sometime circa 1738; that being the case, I reckon he may well have been my 6G grandfather, Thomas SAFFIN (bap 4 Mar 1740, Clatworthy, Somerset) who had married Ann SHEPHERD on 4 Nov 1763, Clatworthy, Somerset.

For the record, my own SAFFIN ancestry is:

Thomas SAFFIN, born circa 1680, married Mary YANDALL, 4 June 1705, Wiveliscombe
|
John SAFFIN, bap 11 May 1709, Brompton Ralph, Somerset, married Elizabeth BURGE, 10 Nov 1732, Clatworthy, Somerset
|
Thomas SAFFIN, bap 4 March 1740, Clatworthy, married Ann SHEPHERD, 4 Nov 1763, Clatworthy (this, I think, was probably your William's father, though by his second marriage)
|
John SAFFIN/SAVIN, bap 13 Jan 1764, Clatworthy; died 1813, Wiveliscombe; buried 26 Dec 1813, Wiveliscombe; Occupation: Thatcher; married Mary RADNIDGE, 17 July 1787, Wiveliscombe
|
John SAFFIN, bap 29 Dec 1793, Wiveliscombe; died 26 Nov 1877, Maundown, Wiveliscombe; Occupation: Ag Lab/Higgler/Thatcher; married Maria SYDMAN/SYDENHAM, 22 June 1817, Wiveliscombe
|
John SAFFIN, bap 12 April 1818, Wiveliscombe; died 1887, Wiveliscombe; Occupation: Ag Lab, Cattle Drover, General Labourer; married Mary GREEDY, 21 Jan 1838, Wiveliscombe
|
William SAFFIN, bap 15 April 1838, Wiveliscombe; died 19 April 1918, Wiveliscombe; Occupation: Wheelwright & Carpenter; married Lydia Harriet TUCKFIELD, 6 Nov 1862, Wiveliscombe
|
Edwin Alfred SAFFIN, bap 10 March 1875, Wiveliscombe; died 1945, Taunton; Occupation: Blacksmith, Plumber, Painter, Signwriter, Licensee; married Harriet COWLIN, 9 March 1898, Milverton, Somerset
|
Violet Rhoda SAFFIN, born 16 Nov 1904, Milverton; died 30 June 2003, Taunton; married Edward John HEMBURY, 1 Aug 1927, Taunton.

Do let me know if you would like further info. Hope this helps!

Best wishes,

Sue

Hi Sue, thanks for your reply, been away hence the slow reply. Im scratching my head a little, can you clarify I have Wiveliscombe and Woolscombe both as places for my Wlliam saffin. the detals of his conviction are dated 25 mar 1826 somerset with a approximate age 17 when he arrived in Australia 1827. I think its stated birth maybe 1809.

Are the villages far apart as I see so many Saffins are from Wiveliscombe?

I'm from New Zealand so the geography is a little confusing even with google.

Many thanks
Amy

I noticed your post in Ancestory, I am a cousin of Sue Hembury-Kellow that you have been corresponding with.

Wiveliscombe and Woolscombe are actually the same place! Wiveliscombe (Wivey to the locals) is the way it is spelt. The pronunciation nowadays would be "Wiv-a-lis-cum". However, in the time period we are looking at and the heavy Somerset accent that most ag workers had it would have sounded like Woolscombe when what they were really saying was more like "Wiv-vuls-comb" that the nearest I can get when trying to write it.

I have actually researched William as he is not part of my direct line, another Saffin (James) was also transported to Australia about 12 years later. I think there were a few black sheep in the Saffin family.

There were numerous Saffins in Wivey and they are quite confusing as they all seem to have 6 or more children and William, John and James popular for the boys and Emily, Jane and Ann for the girls and of course many born the same year and all christen in the same place. Apart from the ones sent to Australia courtesy of court system most of them lived and died in the same area!

Anyway, I don't that this will help but I hope so. If there are any other Saffins you are looking for let me know as I may have them in my tree. If I do find William is related I will let you know.

PS I am in WA but was born in Somerset

Hi Russell

My name is Susan Hoskins and I have a feeling we may have been in touch years ago when I started researching my family. It stopped when I had a child that needed a lot of therapy etc but I am now on the track again and we seem to have a lot of relatives in common.

The most I have traced back is Thomas Saffin about 1680 who married Mary Yandall born about 1687.

If you have been able to go further back I would be interested in hearing from you.

Likewise if you are looking for information I am happy to share. If your connection the Saffins that settled in Danville?

Regards Susan
