I wonder if someone could tell me if there were any records kept of British Merchant Seamen in 1891. I have an ancestor Stephen Newell who may have been in the Merchant Service around that time and I am trying to trace any record of him.

Hi everyone :)
I'm researching the little I know of my Grandfather THOMAS STEVENSON born in 1906 in England. He has some medals for his service, so I assume he served one of the countries. I was always told he was in the Merchant Navy. I don't know where to look for more information. He died in 1965 in Australia, 10 years after my mother was born. So I know very little. Any ideas where I should go next?

Brian:

I checked all the names on the log for your grandfather's name & unfortunately, his name does not appear. You might have the right ship but in a different time frame. My dad
left the ship in March 1945; perhaps your grandfather was
on this ship earlier in the war. An excellent resource for help is Matthew Loughran, historian for the N. Atlantic Chapter of the Amer.
My grandfather George W. Embry of New Orleans was one of the survivors of the attack on the oil tanker Healdton. Most newspaper articles (The New York Times March 23, 1917) say the tanker was torpedoed by the Germans, but I've seen on websites that the tanker may have hit British mines.
Ships list of the S.S. Manchuria show where 5 of the survivors including the Capt. and my grandfather returned home, sailing out of London April 13, 1917, arriving in New York.
I am wondering where I may find military records or records from Standard Oil out of Philadelpia who owned the tanker.
Where there any photos taken of the survivors upon their return??
Any help or suggestions much appreciated.
Sally
Louisiana

DAVIS, Charles Alfred

Can anyone help with a brick wall I have hit. My Grandfather, Charles Alfred Davis was born in Penrhiwceiber on 26-11-1896 to Charles Michael Davis and Jane Jones, he also had a brother name William, D.O.B. unknown. He served in WW1 as a Merchant Marine I am hope to find out more about my Grandfather and his family as he never spoke of them. The information I have obtained has been from his Marriage Certificate and Australian Military Records from WW2 where he served as a Stoker on HMAS Lonsdale, Painter, Gatehouse keeper.

I have tried to trace his birth certificate, but his Australian military records state that he did not produce his birth certificate for enlistment on 11-01-1940 into the Australian Army and later transferred into the Navy in 1942. My mother was the executor of his Will and has all the papers for his marriage, etc. but no birth certificate has been found.

On his Marriage Cert. it is recorded that his father was Charles Michael Davis and mother was Jane Jones. His Military records also mention a William Davis as N.O.K. in South Wales with no know address, until he married my Grandmother.

I have searched the BDM in England, Wales and have not been able to find him, his D.O.B. on all records show 26-11-1896.

According to my mother's information he served in WW1 as a Merchant Marine, but I cannot find any records either.

Does anyone have access to any information or suggestions on how I can find out: 1. How he may have left United Kingdom and arrived in Australia; 2. How I can obtain a copy of a birth certificate; 3. Find out more about his military services as a Merchant Marine during WW1

Dianne

I have an ancestor, Claus Johann (John) Peters, who was in the Merchant Marines, according to family story. He supposedly died and was "buried at sea" sometime between 1881 and 1890. His family, at that time, was living in San Francisco. How would I go about verifying or negating this story? When people were "buried at sea", were there records kept? Any ideas?
Lisa Larimore

According to a short biography written by my mother, when mild color blindness kept him out of the Navy, he served in the MM during WWI aboard the USS Western Wave and, because that was a time before they were married, she couldn't provide much more information. I have searched the on line resources I could find concerning ship lists and Googled the ship name various ways but can't find any listing for this ship. Anyone out there know of the Western Wave or other resources that are available for me to research it? Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to find out how to research a family member who I have been told was in the Norwegian Merchant Navy during WWII.

The only information I have is his name and date of birth. Unfortunately, it was about 13 years before he got married to my grandmother and only one member of my family thinks he was in the Norwegian Merchant Navy. Various other members of my family have different opinions.

Anyone got any ideas how I would be able to research this.

Thanks

My grandfather, George W. Beard, Jr. came to New York around 1915. My family says and his draft notice - 1918- says he was a marine engineer working for someone that looks like Bayant or Bayard. He was still alive in 1920, I think, but dead by 1924 or 25. The story is he sailed on a ship and died out in California of an illness. I don't know the county. He lived at 206 Greenwood Rd. Brooklyn in 1918. Any information appreciated.

WWII Bing Crosby show

My Grandfather, was in the merchant marines during WWII. Sometime during his time in the merchant marines, he sang with Bing Crosby. Does anyone have any footage of Bing Crosby singing with a merchant marine? I would even be happy with just a photo, although I would rather be able to hear my grandfathers voice again. I have been searching for years with no luck, and unfortunately my grandfather is not doing so well lately. I am hoping to get a copy to show him before it is too late.

If you have any ideas where I might find a copy, that would be appreciated as well!

Thank you so much!

Searching for information on my uncle, Charles Fernandez. According to family stories he was born in NY apparently to wealthy parents, he was with the Merchant Marines. He was stationed in Philly or possibly working the ship yards at Hog Island with Merchant Marines. He married my aunt, Ella Chapman ca.1916 in Philly. Ella was pregnant with a daughter when Charles was killed in a trolley-car or train-car wreck in Philly.
If anyone can add to this or point me a direction for more information I would appreciate it. The Merchant Marine sites and contacts say they can not help until I have a service number, death certificate, name of ship or something that would help in locating additional info.

I am hoping to find out any info about my grandfather, George Peter Manuel, who was a Merchant Marine, and died at sea somewhere between 1923-1935. I think he was in Port Arthur, TX at the time as I have a picture of my father and uncle and the picture was taken in Port Arthur. George was supposedly born in Greece but I can't find any records at all, for him or my grandmother, Alice Birch/Burch Manuel, who was born in England. My uncle and my father were born in NYC, in 1921 and 1922, respectively.
Thanks for any help......Dan Manuel

I'm trying to locate information about a Harold Jackson who worked on the North Atlantic run in the 20's and 30's for the CP "Duchess" Liners. Could have moved on to other lines or within CP to the "Empress" liners. Harold was born circa 1890 (+/- 5 yrs) in N. England (Durham??) and played the piano. Don't know if the piano playing was his vocation or just a hobby. Found a "Harold" of approximately the right age lost aboard Lancastria on the commonwealth war graves site. Any info or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Brian

Johnson was a merchant seaman from Norway who was killed in a "spectacular ship explosion" in New York Harbor or Hudson River, leaving Millie, William and Herman orphaned. (Their mother, Emily Johnson from Glasgow, Scotland, died in New York City during childbirth around the mid-1880's.) I have been scouring the Newspaper archives trying to find either information on the explosion or information on Emily's death during childbirth. (Herman's twin also died during the birth) I have not been able to find anything. Is there any chance that someone can help me back up this family "lore" with some facts?

Edward Black born in San Antonio, TX about 1910

I am trying to find more information on my Great Uncle Edward (Eddie) Black. He was my grandmother Nettie Elizabeth Black Hesdorff's youngest brother. I was told by family members he went off and joined the Merchant Marines around 1930. Are there any databases for the Marines where I might be able to find more about him?

He was born in San Antonio Texas about 1910 to Joseph and Mary Black. He was listed in his oldest brother Joseph Black Jr.'s 1954 obituary as Eddie Black.

Thank you,
Ron Hesdorff

I am trying to find any information about my Uncle Durwood. I'm not sure when he actually went into the military but a photo I have indicates he may have served in the European Theatre as early as 1941 or 1942. In one photo he appears to be a MP but my father says he was in a mechanized or tank command. Information in regards to his outfit, duties, and buddy information would be helpful. Our family is compiling a history book and his military history is lacking greatly. Any information would be helpful. I have submitted a SF-180 to the NARA. gkane@hvc.rr.com
