When are more issues of this newspaper going to be added?

I need to find more about my ancestors who lived & died in North Adams.

I know there's issues missing because a friend of mine found an anniversary notice in this paper dated 9 DEC 1915, page 5.
There are not papers (at least that I have found dated before 1919 at Ancestry.
Missing newspapers - Does Ancestry remove them?

Last year I saved quite a few pages from newspapers, and now I find they are suddenly gone. To site just one example, Waukesha Daily Freeman, October 16, 1922 or 1923 (there's a smudge on the scan) is no longer online.

I thought perhaps this problem with the index and failed searches was to blame, but then I looked through the list of years avaiable for the paper and they are all gone!!

Does Ancestry remove data -- and perhaps then add it back at a later date with a claim that they've added to the database??? I am highly suspicious with what I am beginning to believe is a shady company...

It seems more and more results are now highlighting years in the enhanced image viewer. On some pages, this can amount to 100 or more highlights which makes finding the relevant content tedious at best.

Can someone tell me that they find this feature useful? If so, how?

I was wondering if there is a way to copy an article off of a newspaper page. When I first subsribed to Newspapers I could cut and print an article right from a page. Now I have to download the whole page, which overloads and shuts down my computer every time. Is there an easier way to do this? Please tell me I am just doing it the hard way!
It is kind of discouraging to know you pay for the subcription, but there is no way to save them for future reference.

Thanks, Bobbi

I've been getting this error since the Historical birth, marriage and obituary collection was new. Not with every image but it occurs more than half the time and mostly with dates later than 1960. I've tried all the suggestions posted on this board, uninstalled the viewer, reinstalled, changed the options back & forth, rebooted, even installed from scratch on a newer computer. Nothing has fixed the problem. And there has never been any kind of response to the dozens of reports I've made over the last year.
For the $300 I pay each year, I expect a reply to this post from an Ancestry employee who will tell me that they've identified the problem and what they plan to do to fix it. Paying subscribers should not have to rely on other users for backdoor solutions to Ancestry's problems.

For some time I have been trying to access articles in this paper. I search on a name, get results which include this paper, and then I click the link to go to the individual hits for this paper. When the page comes up, I only get the date of the paper, no link to go to the specified page. I have tried getting to the paper by inputing the date of the paper but then only come up with the first page of the paper for that date. This has been going on since the Citizen first appeared in search results - close to if not more than 1 year. Has anyone else had this problem?

Additional years for Deming Headlight

I recently requested that newspaperarchive.com look at adding additional years to their Deming Headlight offering for Deming, New Mexico. I was pleasantly surprised when they responded quickly by adding 1966 - 1977.

I know that Ancestry gets a lot of their data from this group and I would like for Ancestry to also add these years. I prefer using Ancestry and would like to use only one database.

Thank you.

Help!!-Newspaper articles

Please help me! I am trying to defend an old historical mill near me from being torn down! It isn't on land that can be used, its mostly on wetlands. It is a mill from the early 1800s, and I am trying to create a sort of "history" of the building to present in front of a comittee. I want to sound good, and I want to make clear points on why this is an important peice of local history, especially since I am a minor and I have my doubts about being listened to.
Ancestry.com has 5 newspaper articles that would be important to my situation, but alas, since I'm underage no credit card, no membership, and I can't view them!
If someone with a membership could please help me out with this, I would be eternally grateful. I am hoping someone can email me them or send me screenshots. My email is pamelaanne.music@gmail.com
If you can help me out, please email me! thank you very much!

I have been having trouble with the newspaper collection and wondered if others had encountered the same. The search works fine and I get a list of papers with the number of hits in each. When I click on a specific newspaper to view the results there are no links to the individual pages in that newspaper. I've tried logging out and logging back in but get the same. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Follow up re: search problems in Historical Newspapers

Following is a new e-mail I've send to Ancestry.com re: this on-going problem with the Historical Newspaper database: new subscribers beware!

Reference # 060402-000457

It has been one month (3/15) since my initial inquiry to you on this subject and almost 2 weeks since you provided a response. There has been absolutely no change to date with the indexing of the Historical Newspaper Collection and, more importantly, no update of any kind since your reply of 4/2/06. Yet this evening, when I signed on, Ancestry.com is advertising the "doubling of the database" of this collection and encouraging new subscribers! How can you do this when you know full well that your OCR indexing is not doing the job?? I deem this to be false advertising! People cannot get what they are paying for! Please update us as to any progress at all that is being made with the re-indexing of this database. Thank you.

Patricia Peoples

Unsearchable Newspaper Collection

Hi, folks -- just an update on the response of Ancestry.com concerning our inability to conduct searches in this database (i.e., pages previously found either no longer there or no longer retrievable). I first reported this problem on March 15, 2006. Ancestry acknowledged the problem on April 4 saying "our programmers" are working to reindex the newspapers. Today, May 31, 2006, in response to my request for an update on the status of the fix, Ancestry.com responded: "We apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, "they" do not provide us with dates when the issued will be resolved." -- That's it. Honestly!!

And your and my subscription just goes down the drain. And Ancestry continues to market their fabulous historical newspapers collection to unsuspecting customers. I am so unimpressed with this level of "customer service" -- it is abominable.

Pat Peoples

I was all excited about the update on the HISTORICAL NEWSPAPERS....Until I typed in one of my grandparents names....For some reason the search engine will not recognize the surname of FIBIGER as a name. I use to get about a hundred hits or so on the Sheboygan Press....I should get MORE now that they have more online.. But now I get NONE!!!! (not even the hundred I use to get!!)

I have found the same for another name WYNVEEN. Both are pretty common ( in that area of the country) I wonder why it would all of a sudden NOT recognize them.

Anyone else noticed this???? Or am I the only one!!

For example, the entry for Clinton AALDERS, d. 1975 shows an obit in the Wilson County News, Floresville, TX, US Feb/14/2004 but the link is actually to old obits on the Lunenburg Nova Scotia GenWeb site. Here's another one. Leland Abbey, d. 1996 shows an obit in the Wilson County News, Floresville, TX, US Apr/13/2004 but the link is to old obits from the Harrodsburg (KY) Herald. Then there are the hundreds of entrys for name of deceased "Place An Ad".

If General Motors produced cars with as many defects as your "automatic extraction process", we'd ALL be dead according to your "Obituary Collection".

If General Motors produced cars with as many defects as your "automatic extraction process", we'd all be dead.

Newpaper database engine out of commission again

Well, once again, not only is the search engine not working properly, but the matches won't show properly any more either once the page is downloaded. Now folks I could easily find after the search engine was fixed the last time, in numerous newspapers, are no longer "findable". In addition, the pages are downloading unbelievably slowly, which appears to be a function of the servers, since all other pages from other sites download at their normal rapid speed. Please, can Ancestry check into this quickly? (It took more than a month for anyone to hear our plea the last time this database had problems.)
I came to this board in hopes of finding a solution but I see that everybody else is having the same problems as I am. When I put in an exact name, I get zero hits. It tells me to use the name as a keyword, but then I get to many hits that aren't relevant. I am posting this message hoping that if Ancestry sees all the people that are having problems, they might do something about it.

Same frustrations with historical papers search

I see that I'm not the only one having problems with the search engine. I thought when I did not get the hits I expected (as per a search earlier int eh summer) that they had actually removed the newspapers. But I see that that is not the case.

For the record, searching on a surname results in ZERO hits when I had numerous hits earlier in the summer on the same surname. At the time, I was not able to finish my research and only got back to it today to find that I can't. When time is limited this can be extremely frustrating.

I see the search engine has been "broke" for weeks now. Why not just put the old program back in place until the fix is found for the new one?

Thanks
Sharon

Is Rachael McKinnon, who has been so responsive to other issues for this database, still monitoring this Board? Rachael, if you are still here, please feel free to contact me so I can provide you with specific examples to clarify how the search engine is not working properly. (For some surnames it works just fine - for others it will return ZERO hits for the entire country, or an entire state, or a particular newspaper when we know there were many hits before the search engine decided to throw fits! )
When I spoke with Ancestry - they seemed to have some confusion as to what was wrong, and suggested we just use "Ranked Matches" or the Keyword box to get hits. Neither of these options is workable - using the Keyword box can return literally thousands of erroneous hits.

It seems my previous post on this issue has disappeared. Does Ancestry now have censors who decide what questions can be asked?

What I want to know is what is up with the historical newspaper search engine? If I try putting in the first and last name of a well known person Iget no results. If I put that well known person's name in the keyword box I do get results although I run into the problem of not getting the correct name. Why has Ancestry disabled the first name/last name search capability for so many names?

Donna

What has happened on the newspapers searches? Last week when I would do a search from Ancestry's home page for my surname (Masoner) I would get approximately 50 something hits (many false hits). Now when I search from Ancestry's home page I only get 7 hits. All the newspapers that had true hits (except the 7 listed) have been removed or rather don't show up in the search. Examples are the Walla Walla Washington papers, the Wichita Falls papers, the Oxnard California papers, these are just a few that I can remember.

Misleading Date Ranges?

Each paper has a date range given. For example, the Mexia, TX, "Evening News" actually has a cople of ranges. One range is 1900-1912. The dash between these dates indicates to me that papers for all the years in this range are available. They are not. The paper with this date range actually seems to only have papers for the years 1900, 1907 and 1908. I may be wrong about this, but those are the years that can supposedly be browsed using the calendar browser. I have found the same with most of the papers. The Mexia "Evening News" for the range 1912-1919 actually seems to only have a few papers for the year 1912 and the year 1919 and not the years 1912 through 1919 which is what the dash indicates to me. Could it be that more papers are available but only some of the can be browsed with the calendar browser?

This question is also related to my other question about the Mexia paper in which by using the calendar browser I get the Ada, OK, paper and not the Mexia, TX, paper.

BTW, I do love these papers very much! This is an excellent and interesting collection. I only wich the links worked properly, the calendar browser worked better and the descriptions were more accurate. Thanks!

"Evening News", Mexia, TX

I was certainly excited to find the Mexia papers in this collection as many of my ancestors and kin lived there and in the surrounding area. I hoped to find them in the papers. Sadly, I did not find a hit for any of my BAYLESS ancestors. I was, however glad to see that I could browse the papers by date so I began to try and view certain dates. My aunt was born on April 22, 1908. According to the browse calendar, that paper is available so I selected the date and waiting the nearly 2 min. it takes for these images to load only to get the May 22, 1908 Ada, OK, "Evening News". I tried again with the same result. I then tried the next day, April 23, 1908 for the Mexia paper only to get the May 23, 1908, Ada paper. I hope this can be fixed soon. This problem, though, may explain why I can't find my kin in the Mexia papers. :-(

I've found old newspaper referances to persons with the same name as my great grandmother & grandfather, but when I access the paper, I can't find the article that includes the name. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Many thanks, Maria

ANACONDA STANDARD -- Published at Anaconda, Montana 1889 to 1950s

The following is a newspaper I would like very much to see in your collection: "THE ANACONDA STANDARD"

This was a top notch paper which was circulated both state-wide and nation-wide. The copper baron, Marcus Daly, brought in editors & publishers (Durston, Eggleston, Hearst)from Syracuse, New York to operate this newspaper.

I hope you will consider obtaining this newspaper of old.

List County Please..............

I have really used the Historical Papers subscription. However, Ancestry.com is always asking how they can improve their service. My suggestion is that they also include
the county that the newspaper is located. Most genealogical
research is categorized by county (Census, births, etc)
and it would be so helpful if this service did the same. I spend
so much time bringing up the GNIS mapping service to determine the county and much of the time that web site does
not work for me. Please consider this suggestion as it would
speed things up for the researcher and make our experience
less frustrating. Thanks again for the wonderful
historical newspapers. Penny

This week we are updating several indexes on Ancestry. This has affected a few of the recent newspaper releases. This may cause some of you - like Mr. Ackley and Mr. Higgins to see "Check Back Soon" pages. As of right now, the Lowell Sun and the Key West Citizen are fixed - I'm working on finding what others were affected and getting those updated. If you are still having problems searching these papers, let me know.

For two days i have been unable to access the newspaper database, message on screen

"Please Search Again
The search request could not be completed because insufficient information was provided to Ancestry.com. "

please fix soon

............
My comment is that i and others pay a fairly high price to access these databases and expect more than the one or two
newspapers series that are added daily. Most of which are updates.A listing of future additions should also be posted.
The second part of my comment is that an effort to procure larger city newspapers should be made.Newspapers such as
The Baltimore Sun,Chicago Tribune,San Francisco Examiner.
Newspapers from larger cities and area is what i am seeking.

this is what I have got all day when I try to access the days retread (updated Lowell News) Incidently this isnt what the news letter said would be posted today, dont matter this does not work either. I would post this with cutomer service but thats a bigger waste of time than this. They tell you to expect to wait a long time for a reply because volume is high, to you suppose it is all those people writing because they are so happy with the service they are paying for. I know I am.

We're sorry but search.Ancestry.com is temporarily unavailable. We are undergoing routine maintenance or we may be experiencing unexpected technical problems.
the last posting of a newspaper was 9 Apr and that was an update not a new submission, the last new subission was 29 Mar. This service started out with a bang and like everything else about Ancestry.com it has gone right down the toliet. How can you justify this performance and how can you justify your continued adverisment of this service. This is fraud. Compounded by the customer not being able to recoup their money on the subscription. This is the poster child for buyer beware. My e mail is allenackley@hotmail,com, not the 4 year out of date one listed.

PROBLEM with dabatase - New York Times (New York, New York), 1857-74, 1876-80

I'm getting some strange results while searching the database of New York Times (New York, New York), 1857-74, 1876-80 (http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/6187.htm).

A page from at least one issue (July 6, 1863, page 4) keeps appearing in the search results, but the search results describe it as being from a list of different issues.

I have formulated a database search that highlights this problem. If you go to the search page for this database and type "impetuous" for first name, "infantry" for last name, and "Barnum" as a keyword, you will get a list of 13 search results. I've only checked the first six, but clicking on any of them (17 January 1866, 13 February 1866, 17 March 1866, 29 March 1866, 05 April 1866, 19 April 1866) displays the SAME page of the SAME issue (July 6, 1863, page 4).

My gut feeling is that this page (and perhaps others) is indexed numerous times in the database, and that the issues listed do not actually contain "hits".

I guess somebody should go through this database page by page to make sure that the scanned pages are properly identified, then re-index the whole thing. Maybe there's an easier way, but I'm not aware of it.

Thanks for your time and attention.

Gary

I have found great things in the newspaper collection, because there are several geographical regions that are beginning to covered, that are ancestral areas for me. Is there any way to learn what is "coming up" in terms of additional newspaper coverage, or a way to request certain newspapers, or even to request to expand coverage of an existing database? For example, one of the newspapers of great interest to me has only 1905 and 1906 on-line. I'd like to learn about ancestry's plans to expand this, if any, and if a "petition" from interested subscribers might help them to decide which areas to expand. Any thoughts on this topic?

Is there a newspaper add schedule?

I was wondering if there is a schedule of which newspapers will be added in the up-coming months. The search feature, even with its understandable limitations, is obviously a huge time saver. So if a couple of other papers in my research area were going to be added, then I'd naturally want to change my on-site research plans :-).

One of these days I'm sure you folks will have everything online and hopefully the content owners won't charge you an arm and a leg to get it online. They have to realize how valuable the indexing it.

I have roots in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and would love to see some newspapers from the mid 1800's. The majority of the New England newspapers currently offered are from the 20th century. Since many families migrated from this area to other parts of the country, I would think posting older papers would help many researchers.

19th Century Big City Newspapers?

I had a trial subscription to the "Historical Newspapers" database and was very disappointed. While there are large numbers of newspapers for a few small towns, many big city newspapers seem to be missing.

Is there a chance that more 19th century city newspapers will be added to the collection?

In the 19th century, I had family living in Baltimore, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Milwaukee (among others), none of which are represented in the database.

(of course I may just be unlucky that not even the smaller towns my family lived in are represented - if only they had lived in Gettysburg, PA or Appleton, WI!).

Centralia Sentinel Illinois Problem

I have emailed and chatted online with support about this problem already. I try to access this newspaper database and it gives me the images of the Marion Weekly out of Ohio.
Support told me they can pull the images up if they do a search but not if they use the view images link.
Ok well I put in several searches and checked all the results, and guess what , they are all from the Marion Weekly as I reported. Is there anyone out there who can check from their computer and see if they are receiveing the wrong database also? I wish to see the Centralia Illinois Sentinel, NOT the DECATUER SENTINEL.
Their final answer to my problem was that some problems take longer then others to correct and they would check on it.
Very Helpful.
Sincerely,
Brenda

Oregon - not a single historical newspaper image!

Each week, I watch the list of historical newspapers grow. I've noticed that some states have a many as 9 different newspapers represented in this collection.

And yet...not even ONE Oregon newspaper is available!

Surely from a marketing perspective, it would be beneficial to have at least ONE newspaper available for every state. Why continue to add multiple newspaper titles for some states, while other states aren't even represented in this collection yet?

When can we anticipate having at least one newspaper available for every state? What is the timeframe for the addition of an Oregon paper...preferrably a major publication, such as The Oregonian?

Thank you
