I use The Master Genealogist as my personal program altho there are other good programs avaliable that are free (Legacy and PAF to name two).
As far as putting things on the web, The Ancestry Member Trees are ok, as long as you understand their limitations; the same can be said for the World Trees at Rootsweb.
You might also consider getting a FreeWebPage at Rootsweb and placing your genealogy on line that way.
Rootsweb offers several mailing lists to help people get their genealogy online.
