Those places were not the only ones that only used initials. The 1870 census for Madison County, Tennessee in the US drives me up a wall every time I look at it. The census taker (or perhaps someone who copied it) only used the first initial. My grandfather's whole family was in Madison County then and since the family name is Johnson, it is almost impossible to identify them. I have only identified a few by looking at the 1860 and 1880 census and making guesses. I want just want to reach back through the years and choke the lazy ones who did that. And then there are some that you just want to bless-like the 1850 census in Jefferson County, Georgia-which not only is written very clearly but also recorded the county and state of birth.
