HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE??
This inscription appears around a knight riding a horse on my GG grandfathers headstone, Isaiah Lord, b 1822, and emigrated to the US from Lancashire. There are other surnames in the family plot also, so could be for another person, but he was the owner of the plot.
From what I have read on-line, there are only a handful of persons granted this title. Does anyone know where I could look to see if their is any validity to this emblem on the headstone?
My father had asked if I noticed the emblem of hammer and nails on the tombstone, inscribed for his occupation as a carpenter.
So I don't know if this would have any real significance for being inscribed.
Any thoughts or meaning of the phrase would be appreciated.
