Cemetery Photos Online -- what year is too recent?

Just had a question that maybe others might be able to answer. I am in the process of photographing the tombstones at Murrayville Pioneer Cemetery in Langley BC and was wanting to post them online for others. Do you think that family members might be upset with this idea? Do you think that I should limit the pictures to those who died before 1960?1950? and just put a note that I have photos for the others and will email the picture if anyone is interested?

Looking forward to hearing people's opinions.
Hi all,

I need photos of headstones at the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church cemetery. The cemetery doesn't have an address but is located here: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=%2B36%C2%B0+42%27+51.01%22,+-7...

If anyone can do this I'd greatly appreciate it. There are lots of gaps in the history of my family that I think could be filled by the information at this cemetery. I'd love to see all the headstones but I am looking for Harris, Glass, and Walden specifically.

Thanks!

I came across a photo of a grave for "Bertsch" at the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. It's so striking, I was curious about the family and have been able to find NO information at all. It's not listed at FindAGrave for Woodlawn even though it appears to be a large group and internet searches have turned up nothing. The best online photo I've found can be seen here:

http://www.pellegrinlowend.com/woodlawn.html

It's one of the last photos on the page.

Any help, ideas or information would be very much appreciated!

I'm looking for a pic of my ggg-grandparents grave. I checked with the "Find A Grave" site, but the volunteer does not go to that cemtery. I'm looking for John Stanley and his wife Anna. They are together with one headstone. John is listed with years 1822-1877 (though it is actually 1887). Anna is July 8, 1828-1898. Any assistance is appreciated.

How do you read worn out letters on grave markers

My brother and I have recently began tracing our roots and went to the old family cemetary. I have taken lots of photos (that I hope to upload to findagrave soon) but some of the stones are very worn and hard to read.

What are some techniques used to make the letters more readable?

We actually were wiping the mud off of one and noticed if I ran my finger flat across the stone it left mud in the deeper depression of the letters making it readable.

We thought about using charcoal and try to make rubbings but many stones are pitted from the elements making the rubbing unreadable as will.

Any help, tips, links greatly appreciated.

Shannon

legal issues pertaining to photographing headstones

I have been doing some volunteer work photographing headstones and was questioned recently by a cemetery sexton as to whether I was related to the family. I was not, so the sexton asked me to contact the family requesting the photo and have them mail a notarized letter to the sexton giving me permission to take the pictures. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this or knows of any legal issues that surrounds the practice of taking pictures. Thank you for your response. Anita

I see headstonehunter is no longer in existence and there was a site (I think it was rootsweb) where the site is not accepting photos at this time because the administrator is behind in posting them. I have photos from Seward Mound (aka Chapmans), Dresden, Aux Sable (all Grundy cty) and Willard Grove (Will cty). Most of them are Bedfords but I have others and am willing to take photos. Would love to post what I have to share with others. Thanks.

I am looking for cemetery photos in Canada (probably Ontario)for the surnames: Sheerin, Sherin, Ward, Kennedy, Dawson, & Plunkett. I am also looking in New York, Maryland & Illinois for the surnames: Sherin & Kennedy. I am looking in Philadelphia, Pa. for the name Plunkett. I have not narrowed down any geographic area for many of my subjects. If the cemetery has a religious designation, the ones I would be looking for would probably be Protestant, with Ireland as the ancestral home for all. All of these names are connected to my ancestral relatives.

Has anybody ever heard of this?

OK fellow genealogy enthusiast. I went to a local public Cemetery District today to find out who I would talk to regarding transcribing their grave site information to the California Genealogy website http://cagenweb.com/. Well, I now know why the Cemetery District has not been transcribed before. The woman in their office got in my face, shook her ink pen in my face, and told me "the District will not allow any transcription to the internet!" She spent the next 10 minutes scolding me while I tried to explain it was NOT something I was getting paid for or something I wanted to increase her work load. I was very glad to make as graceful an exit from her office as possible.

She also told me only "family members" are allowed to take pictures of the grave sites otherwise I could be sued since the stones belong to the families! Wow, ask a simple question ("Who should I talk to about this") & get chewed out & threatened.

My question is; can I really get sued for taking a picture of a grave site & posting it to the internet? It’s not like I’m getting paid to do this project it’s volunteer work for an all volunteer website. Many cemeteries around the country have already been transcribed, with & without photos, and are listed on the internet.

I have been doing genealogy for years and have often been helped by people who live geographically closer to my ancestors than I do. As many of you know there are websites dedicated to genealogist who volunteer to do research in their area for people who live to far away to do it their self. I wanted to give something back by providing greater access to the information in my county. Now I’m worried about being sued for taking a picture of a grave site.
Idea for reading illegible head/tombstones?

Hi board
I recently read in the Rootweb newsletter that someone suggested using colored sand, wetted with a spray bottle, to press into the impressions left by long faded words on hard to read headstones to better reveal the letters. Does this sound benign or would it damage the stone in any way?
I do cemetery documentation and I would really like to be able to do something about the stones that are illegible.
Thanks in advance.
Shawna
Grand Rapids, MI
This one is confusing.
Picture attached reads:

Eva and Solomon
Bunch

dates 1886-1887 under Solomon's name

1. Are they twins that died young?
If they are twins, why is Eva listed with no date?

2. Is the date (only being under Solomon) just an error on the tombstone itself?

3. Given the death date of 1887, doesn't this tombstone look much newer than that date? Would that further explain the error?

4. If they are not twins, maybe they were adults (married couple) and the dates are just an error altogether.

How would I find out more info? Given how old this tombstone is and the fact it is in a very rural area, I am not betting that the Cemetery has any detailed information on it. Could I be wrong? Any ideas overall?

Porcelain Monuments?

Pictured is a photograph of a porcelain headstone taken in Butler Missouri's cemetery. It is one of a dozen porcelain monuments in that cemetery & I would like to know, if any of you readers, have seen this type of monument(s) before? If so, please tell me where!
All the monuments photograph's I have collected & trust me, there are literally dozens of them, in all corners of Missouri cemeteries that I've been to, are mainly Victorian styles but all are hollow & look completely different than granite, marble, basalt, sandstone, slate or just about anything else you could come up with for a cemetery material. I was once a sexton of a large cemetery in Pleasant Hill Missouri, so I know my materials. Any help at locating more of these types of monuments, will be duly noted in my upcoming article in the IACP & AGS, newsletter & magazine article. Thank you if you can help, Jim

I have read in various places of people attempting to take a stone photograph and saying some of the inscription is buried under a couple inches of soil. Would it be inproper to assist in a "clean up" to remove the soil in order to take the picture? I am just starting to get into taking stone pictures and have located a couple of young children the the stone is very old but cannot tell if there is any additional information on it. Also would it be proper to try to "right" a stone that has fallen over. I understand if any doubt of location it would be better left alone.
Thanks for any input.
Pat
I have found my great-great grandparents (David & Grace Austin), and my great-grand aunts husbands (Glenn O Davis) gravesites and took photos of them...however there are emblems on their headstones that I don't understand the meaning of...and was wondering if anyone knows what they are/mean? See my attachments for photos.

My great-great grandmothers, Grace, is the one with the five point star that has the letters in each point...the only thing I can see it in, spelling out the letters are FATAL. Any ideas on any of them?

Hello Fellow Genealogists!

I have noticed there are a few threads out there that ask for free sites to share photos of Gravestones and transcriptions. I am in the works in trying to figure out a way to allow people to submit or post transcriptions of their own on my site "Gravestone Archives". I have noticed a lot of my visitors wish to share transcriptions for posting on my site. I really wish to accommodate them, and I may have to create another site that is an extension of my own, but I am interested in finding out what potential viewers/users of this site would like to see. My goal is to make it free YES FREE!

Please post suggestions, about what you would like to see on a site that will allow you to post transcriptions of your own for all to see in the internet. I will do my best to integrate such a thing on my own website because I think it is a very good idea.

Robert

Nannie Peters or Stover was b 1863 & d 1889. I have her middle name as Delena. If married it was to David L Stover who married again.
What's the best way to connect the transcription with the photo?

I'm relatively new to photographing a cemetery and recently finished one with about 1600 headstones. I've transcribed the pertinent info and renamed all the pics. My question is, what is the best format to use when sending the cd to a county coordinator here on Rootsweb? How would I make a report to show which pic goes with which individual? I see this on the web page where you click on the individual's name, and the pic pops up, but how would I make a similiar report? I want to make sure everything matches and is less confusion and work for the coordinator. Any suggestions are appreciated and thanks!

Need help translating German headstone inscription

I am trying to translate the German inscription on my GG grandmother's headstone. Unfortunately I was only able to get one picture of it that doesn't seem to show all the letters. The inscription is fairly worn but with the help of a translation site I was able to translate some of it. This is what it looks like to me:

HIER RUHT IN GOTT (Here rests in God)

MEINE INIGST CELIEBTE GATTIN (My ?? ?? Wife)

UND UNSERE THEURE MUTTER (And Our Good Mother???)

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
