Sample census forms are useful for both purposes you mention. Is often difficult to read the column headings, especially online. People do copy the information onto the sample forms, especailly if they are reading from microfilm. It is the best way, short of photographing the film, to be sure to get all of the information. Some people make their own census forms in their spreadsheet program, but I have not found any way to directly copy census information into the sample census forms.
