Use of the term "capitalist" on census records

In the 1900 census records for Cavetown, Washington County, MD, my husband's g-grandfather's 3 spinster sisters are living with their widowed father. All 3 of the sisters have "capitalist" listed for occupation. I thought this was some family joke but then my husband pointed out that someone else on the same page had "capitalist" listed for occupation. I have never seen this before. What is the meaning of this term for occupation ?
