Biszantz Coat of Arms

Hello,I have run into conflicting information regarding our coat of arms. One source I found 9 years ago provides the Coat of arms and states at the bottom of the description and picture "The grant of arms is recorded in the "Libro d'oro della Nobilita" (Italy) and "Das Grosse Wappenbuch" (Germany and Austria). A second source I found yesterday on www.wappenbuch.com has a different spelling of Bisantz and a different coat of arms. Can anyone recommend to me a professional or website location that can help me with this? I can easily email the original coat I received to anyone who might help. Thank you..I want to put the accurate one on the cover of my family book I am giving out as Xmas gifts this year. Shannon

an ancestor had arms but died without heir. he left his possesions to his nieces children, one of whom could only inherit if he changed his surname by Royal Licence or Act of Parliment. would that mean that he would also be able to use the arms?

new to all of this and trying to understand how it all works.

Is This A Real Coat of Arms?

Hello,

I have this small silverplated trinket or ring box with this shield shaped coat of arms. What I've been able to dertermine is just the names of the symbols. Lion rampant(dexter), cross pattee or iron cross, 4 mullet.

I'm wondering if this is real or just artistic license. City or perhaps military or school? Thank you for any help you can give. Here is a link to the photo.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/tav120/SPTrinkietShield...

Possible Jackson Coat of Arms?

I have just received a framed family crest / coast of Arms for part of my family from a relative who recently passed away. It is the (although from what I have found there are many)Jackson family crest, but I can't find it anywhere on line, only different ones. It has the latin phrase 'Malo Mori Quam Foedari' (I would rather die than be dishonored),but so do a lot of other crests..... My Jacksons were from Yorkshire. How do one dwtermine which line gets which crest, or would the one that I have (which is very old) have morphed into something more modern? How can I find what makes it special to MY family? Any help would be appreciated, can send a photo if necessary. Thanks!!
Laurie

Arms of Geoffrey de Marisco

Matthew Paris in his account of the execution of William de Marisco in 1242 gives the arms of both William and his father Geoffrey de Marisco, the Justiciar of Ireland. Geoffrey’s arms were “gules, a lion rampant argent”. Variations of these arms were used by various family members (including William), and they are straightforward to draw.

However, Paris also gives a second set of arms to Geoffrey de Marisco, possibly used in connection with his position as Justiciar. Can anyone help me work out how to draw them? They are described as:

“Party per fess gules and vert, a fess argent between two plates in chief and a crescent in base of the third”.

My main questions are:

a)	Does “Party per fess” indicate the shield was divided into three sections horizontally?
b)	If not, what is the purpose of “Party”
c)	If so, how were the sections coloured? Was it gules, vert and gules (top to bottom)?
d)	How does one draw the “fess argent between two plates” (i.e. how does one draw a “fess” on a shield that has itself been defined as “Party per fess”?

Regards,

Phil

Prussian Coat of Arms - Gutwasser

Hello everyone. I’m not terribly experienced with coats arms, so I’m hoping someone will be able to help me find out a little more information from a hand-painted family crest that has been passed down in my family.

I’ve attached a jpeg of the scanned image, but I’ll describe it briefly:

The shield’s field is blue and there is an odd image of something that looks like what could be a fancy gold colored cup (grail/goblet-like) with a four streams of silver (water maybe) pouring into it from a black dot (maybe its supposed to be a hole) just above it. It also gives the impression of a fountain.

The crest itself is a golden symbol that looks similar to a tall 4 with another line running horizontally through the leg of the four (see image). It is perched atop a silver helmet with blue and white wings springing up from the base to frame the 4 shape.

1588 is written across the upper part of the paper (split into 15 and 88 on either side of the crest).

Below the shield, in neat German calligraphy, is written:

Gutwasser ~
N.W. Böhmen b. Schneeberg.

My last (and only that I know of so far, I cannot locate any other members of her family) Gutwasser relative was my great great great grandmother whose maiden name was Anna Marie Gutwasser. She lived from 1849 to 1902 and I believe this framed coat of arms dates from about that time period. My research shows she was born in Mühlhausen, Thüringen, Prussia/Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1857.

I find this coat of arms to be very curious, and would like to ask anyone with experience with German heraldry, exactly what the text mentioned above means. Does the date 1588 apply to origins of the name Gutwasser or the city of Schneeberg? I know there are many cities, towns and villages named Gutwasser in Prussia (now Germany, Austria, etc.), could this maybe be a reference to a town named Gutwasser (maybe one my Gutwasser relatives were named after or vice versa)?

I’ve been researching the location of Schneebergs that were once Prussian (most of Bohemia is now in Austria) but have found nothing conclusive yet. There are a couple of prospects, but I can’t make any further suggestion without further research.

I would like it very much if anyone with experience in Germanic heraldry could possibly help me identify the symbols in this coat of arms and help me track down more information about this coat of arms and where it came from. As I’ve said, I’m not really experienced with heraldry of any kind, so I would be open to any suggestions of resources which I could use to identify when this coat of arms came to be (is there an index of dates and names granted crests in Bohemia, Prussia?)

If there is anything further, or any one has any questions, please leave a post. I will try and attach a decent sized jpeg of the Gutwasser coat of arms; please let me know if it doesn’t come through.

Thanks for your time. I haven’t come across anyone else researching the Gutwassers and fear I am treading in unexplored waters, so I’m looking forward to figuring out this little enigma in my genealogy research.
Identifying Old Canvas Coat of Arms Banner......?

I recently inherited what appears to be a very old canvas banner with what appears to be a Coat of Arms. The item is large, 8' x 8' and seems to be hand painted. The motto at the bottom is Latin and reads, "To Love My Country" The top motto appears Welsh??? Not sure what it says.

The Coat of Arms I have not been able to identify. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Jeremy

PS. I have other more detailed pictures if needed.

This is a (bad) photo of a painting in my grandmother's possession. I am trying to find the genealogical history (if any) surrounding it.

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h274/merger96/crest3.jpg

Background: My grandmother inherited this, but I don't know from whom. The Rattray family lived in Channel Islands and Lille, France, but as far as I know were British citizens. I believe Rattray is a Scottish name. The Summers family was from Scotland, and the Perchard family was from France or Channel Islands.

Is there any way to tell from what country a coat of arms might be?

The crest is unfortunately cut off in the photo, but I recall that there was no helmet, only a small scallop shell in the center. Does anyone know what the significance is?

I am aware that we have no rights to use this coat of arms but I would like to identify for the sake of family history.

-Julie K

German Heraldry Authority

I have information that was originally acquired by a professional German genealogist, undocumented and now deceased, that my 10th Great Grandfather, Jost Rodekord/Rodecourt of Gronau (on the river Leine, south of Hanover, Germany), was granted a Coat of Arms in 1585. Is there an German Heraldry Authority that I could write to, to determine if there was in fact a Coat of Arms granted to him, and if so, where to find a registered description of the blazon of arms and the circumstances for the grant?

Chuck Rodekohr
http://www.rodekohrancestors.com
Conflicting Heraldry Information

Hi, I have been reached the end of the paper trail left by my family and am now studying the Heraldry documents to try to trace them further. However, while doing this, I have run across two different official heraldry documents that say two totally different things.

I first found the Original Grant of arms of my 12th Great Grandfather in the National Archives of England. This document names his father and grandfather and tells what city and county they both lived in. Recently I got a hold of the Visitations there were conducted by the King of Arms starting in 1550 to make sure that each person was entitled to the coat of arms which they claimed and also recorded this information.

The first Visitation I found for my ancestors county was in 1552. In it, my 13th Great Grandfather is listed along with his wives and supposedly his children. No picture of discription of his coat of arms is listed. The next visitation to this county was in 1558. By this time, my 13th Great Grandfather was dead but his son my 12th Great Grandfather who I found the original grant of arms for was still living. In this visitation, it lists the father and Grandfather of my 13th Great Grandfather. But this information contridicts the Original grant of arms to my 12th great Grandfather. The original Grant of arms of my 12th great Grandfather states that my 14th Great Grandfather's name was John where as the Visitation of 1558 says that his name was Arthur. Both of these documents are official heraldry documents so I am very confused as to which one to believe to be accurate? I did find a will of a John in from the correct city and county and in the same time period as this should be. In this will, he does mention his oldest son who shares the correct name with my 13th Great Grandfather. However, this Arthur mentioned in the Visitation married into a very promenent English Family and therefore his existance is also proven.

So, which would should I believe as one is obviously wrong?

A cousin has recently sent me a copy of Arms thought to be those of the subject or of his son, also Nathaniel, b. 1788 Rainham, Essex. The family had been successful merchants in the City of London for four or five generations, though they had come down in the world by the 1780's. In view of the recent bicentenary of Abolition, I was disturbed to see that the crest was a naked negress holding a twig of Oak with three leaves and three acorns. I hope it signifies the Abolitionist side. Does anyone know the significance or who could tell me? I could email a copy. Regards, Martin Collyer

Hawkins coat of arms

Hi,

I've recently discovered a memorial to a Hawkins ancestor (William Hawkins b. abt 1624 died 1677) in a church in Mortlake that has a coat of arms above it. Family tradition has it that he was descended from Sir John Hawkins of Plymouth Armada fame (and slavery infamy!). It appears to be the same as the coat of arms of Sir John (sable on a point wavy a lion passant or three bezants) except without the crest of a demi Moor bound, and a "canton argent or escallop between 2 palmers staves sable". I understand that the canton was added for Sir John around 1571, and the unfortunate crest awarded to him by Queen Elizabeth for his exploits, but what I don't know is whether those were both additions to an existing family coat of arms, or if the whole thing was created especialy for him. Burke's mentions a Kent Hawkins with the same arms without the point wavy, and it's impossible to say for sure if the point wavy is definitely on there (poor light, high up), but I know nothing more about them and how they might be connected.

The reason for the question is that I suspect our William was actually descended from Sir John's brother William, but those arms being exclusive to Sir John would appear to rule that out.

Any ideas on how to find this information out would be hugely appreciated.

Best,

Alex
The motto is stated P534 as relating to Euen, Ewan, Ewing.

Is there any other information I can find about its origins?

ADMIN NOTE: Reminder re commercial sites (post no replies)

Dear Posters:

Please read:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.heraldry/934/mb.ashx

Also, please bear in mind that there is no such thing as a "family crest." It does not matter how many vendors (commonly referred to as "bucket shops") want to sell such things. It does not alter the fact that they do not exist. Crests are the design placed atop an heraldic shield. Heraldic shields and accompanying elements are awarded to a single amiger, not a family. A search of this board and the accompanying list's archives for the term "family crest" will garner many messages explaining this in detail.

We realize that those who post "you can find it here!" and supply a link to a commercial site are trying to be helpful. However, most of those links are to sites which will sell a history that is generic and probably totally unrelated to your actual genealogical family. And if the history or "arms" do not exist, they may create one that has no basis in fact or heraldry.

If you would like to learn more about heraldry, read more posts from both this board and the gatewayed list, to discover the resources mentioned. Visit your local library and ask the resource librarian to point you in the direction of books on Heraldry. Burkes Peerage is online now and has some good articles. The Heraldic Office for Scotland is the Lord Lyon Court. It has an informative website.

Any messages with links to commercial sites posted to this board WILL be removed.

Yours Aye,

Lauren M.
Dear Posters:

This board is for posting messages regarding Heraldry and Coats of Arms. It is not a genealogical discussion bulletin board (or list.)

At times (rarely) it is pertinent to include the genealogy/descent of an Armiger. However, if your interest is general genealogy for a specific surname or family branch or furthering your research, please post to the genealogical boards (and lists) for the surname or the location of interest.

In order to maintain the integrity of the board, genealogical messages posted to this board are moved to the surname board and off topic genealogical messages are not allowed to gateway to the list.

Please keep on topic.

Yours Aye,

Lauren M.
Using a Coat of Arms to Trace a Family?

Hello, I have have managed to research and find the coats of arms that belonged to three of my ancestors in England. All three Grandfather, father, and son. Both the father and the son are obviously based off that of the Grandfather. I was wondering if it is possible to trace a family based on the coats of arms and how one might go about doing it. I am also interested in why a person was granted a coat of arms if that information can be found. Someone in the family had to be the first go get one.

I have received two different pictures of the Yelton Coat of Arms. One is: gold with a red left diagonal band placed between a naurally colored pland badge of the rase of England at the top and three oak leaves, emblem of England, placed in a Y-shape, in the center an acorn all naturally colored. The second is: a red band running across the top of the sheild from corner to corner, with 3 lions: 2 placed at each corner at the bottom of red band the third is place in the middle of the shield at the bottom. (these lions are standing on two feet. There is a red lion at the very top of the Coat of Arms standing on three legs with one (right)extended outward. Also the words "FOY ent tout" printed over the top of the Coat of Arms. Could someone please tell me which one is the correct Coat of Arms for the Yelton surname. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Crest authorized by the Vatican to a Swiss Guard?

I am attaching an image of a crest that I am researching.

The family surname is Arduser and the family was from
Switzerland.

On the back of the photograph there is a handwritten
note stating "Arduser crest - Authorized by the
Vatican to a Swiss Guard".

On the left of the crest is an image of a man perhaps
in a Swiss Guard uniform. There is a woman on the
right side plus several other human figures in the
bottom corners.

On the bottom it says "19 Die Arduser 07". I'm
assuming that 1907 is a date that has some
significance.

Could this be a photo of a crypt or tomb? Can anyone
suggest a way to get more information on all of this?

Help finding the blazon for McAuley, a branch of the Maguires

In my family research, I have come across two distinct Coats of Arms associated with the name Cawley, or McCawley, and other variants in Ireland. These arms are for: (1) McAuley or McAwley of the Southern Ui Neill (the O’Neills), designated as Westmeath; and (2) McAuley, a branch of the Maguires, which I have seen designated as Ulster. I have obtained pictures of both Arms and Crests, and I have the blazon for the arms of McAwley of the Southern Ui Neill.

I would like to find the blazon for the arms and crest of McAuley a branch of the Maguires. The picture I have is of a white shield with a black chevron, on which are the heads of three animals facing forward and each superimposed on what appear to be fleur dis lis. I have sometimes seen the heads and fleur dis lis colored yellow and sometimes colored white. The crest is a full helmet on top of which is a bird.

If anyone can direct me to a site where I can find the blazon for the McAuley, a branch of the Maguires, or could send the blazon to me, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Robby
How to find coat of arms on Chinese Armoral Porcelain

We recently acquired an early Chinese Armoral tankard with a finely painted coat of arms on the front. We would like to find the name or origin of the coat of arms. The shield is divided by a line down the center and is decorated with two lion heads above and one below a purple chevron on the right side of the shield. In the upper quarter of the left side of the shield there are three hunter horns hanging by strings. Below the horns are two rows of nubuly (clouds) in gold on a blue background. Above the shield, there is a helmet, and ornate mantling surrounds the shield. At the top of the tankard, there is a red demi-lion rampant (emerging from a blue bar with gold stripes).
I would appreciate any information regarding where I can research or find the origin of such heraldry.

Identifying a gold Coat of Arms on music box

I found an old black wood-and-leather music box a couple months ago in a second-hand store, and it has a gold Coat of Arms on the top (It plays a song from Fiddler on the Roof, for reference). I'm trying to find out what family/clan it belongs to. I've searched around for a while now, and I haven't been able to identify it yet. Manually looking through images of crests takes far too long, and there isn't any gaurentee that whichever site I happen to be on will actually <i>have</i> it listed.

Can anyone suggest a good comprehensive website or search that would be helpful?

If needed, a scan of the Coat of Arms can be found at the following link, as well as attached to this message:
http://ivygardens.net/art/crest.bmp

Thank you,
Megan

Possible Papworth Source

Hi Again,
I have just come across an entry for Rev. GEORGE WARRINGTON in the General Armory for England Ireland Scotland and Wales. It mentions ARMS, with a quartering for STRUDWICK, and a Blazon of the quartering the same as that in the Papworth entry for STRUDWICK. Would you have any other details on the WARRINGTON line, pedigree, or image of the arms with quartering?
(I am not sure of the timing of Papworth's Publication, and the General Armory, but this is the first reference that connects the blazon with a specific individual, and may explain Papworth's source)

Scan wanted re London Visitation 1687

Hi,
Back again with a further query in my search for an amigerous Strudwick.
I have been given the following reference, which is as close as I have come to the possible source of the STRUDWICK entry in Papworth.
Source: "The Visitation of London begun in 1687", Part 2, page 622, Harleian Society, London, 2004.
"Mr: Wm: Strudwick, Groscer" is listed in Holborn-Cross Precinct of Farringdon Ward Without: Parish of St Sepulchre in a return endorsed with the date 2 March 1687 (College of Arms, Phiipps Ms 13084, vol. 10, pp 129-135).
I am hoping someone is able to provide a scan of the relevant page entry in the London visitation for my records, or perhaps some more information on the information in the Phiipps MS. I understand that ' The return is one of those prepared under instructions from the Aldermen by the Beadles of each ward listing all the baronets, knights, esquires, gentlemen or "reputed gentlemen" and all other persons in their ward who used armorial bearings. These returns were delivered to Sir Henry St George to form the basis for his own lists of individuals to be summoned to appear before him at the Visitation. Few of those listed in the returns recorded pedigrees at the Visitation but this is presumably because the surviving returns owe their existence to having been retained until the wards in question were visited - and only about half the City was.", ...information provided to me by another helpful soul.
Cheers,
Marcus Strudwicke
Dear Fellow Genealogists: My son is getting married this summer and they are having a Scottish Wedding. Several family members are wearing kilts and their family tartans. I would like to honor my great grandmother Sallie McConnaughey. I have tried to research the family tartan but I seem to only find a connection to the Campbell tartan. Can anyone help me find the proper tartan for the McConaughey family line? Many thanks, Sally

silver spoons

Hello, I'm a new subscriber. I've been researching my family history for some years but have not ventured into the heraldry field before. I'm doing things the wrong way round, I've already posted this message to the List, but am doing it again with a picture of the spoons.

My aunt, a great believer in "family", had some treasured silver spoons which have been passed down to me. They have a strange crest of a stylised fish or eel or dolphin (?) with a trident behind it. Recently I had a good look at the crest, and also the hallmarks - and discovered with a little help from Jackson's book on silver and gold marks of England, Scotland and Ireland that they were over 200 years old and were made by William Ward, a Dublin goldsmith, in 1802! What a find.

But - I am very puzzled as to the spoons' link to my very English family, named HUNT. None of the Hunts have ever been seafaring people, or involved in commerce of a seafaring nature. They came from a little village in Worcestershire, and my particular line emigrated to Australia in 1879 - two schoolteachers, with 8 children. The schoolteachers' fathers were a shoemaker and Welsh farmer, not wealthy people. Did the emigrants purchase the spoons second-hand? There are only 4, one smaller than the others, and 3 of them are well worn by a right handed person or persons. When the family arrived in Aust. there were 4 daughters aged 16, 15, 10 and 3 which correspond roughly to the degree of wear of the spoons.

I have checked books on heraldry for families with a crest similar to that described above (I can send a scanned picture on request) but found none; nor do families with my own family names have remotely similar crests.

Nancy in NZ

I am in hopes some kind soul here can help educate me without $ charge other than my deepest thanks for my heart. Thank you ever so much!

Question # 1 - Is Family Crest & Coat Of Arms the same thing?

# 2 - What does it mean when someone says " My Family was awarded a Coat Of Arms?" How does one get awarded a coat of arms and from whom?

# 3 - Is there a website (Link) to seeing many coat of arms and their meaning and being able to copy and paste without a charge.

Sincerely,
Rebecca

Thanks to everyone that has been helping me with this. It has been helpful. I do need more explanation, though, about the granters of arms info. that was sent. I don't quite understand the name changes that occured-why did men do this? The change looks as though it was Phelps and then changed to McDonnell. Was this done to inherit estates?

Of the descriptions under the general armory info. it looks like the phelps that has the lion rampant with fitchee crosses is the closest to the one I possess (I know, this doesn't mean it's the one I'm looking for, but it is the closest so far)
bing

thanks for your answers, and you are likely right. it is a very plain shield. same exactly on both sides. and no mark anywhere of k. or year or anything. the top is fluted or ruffeled around the setting that is missing, a solid back under the setting and that is it. the band is thick and wide, likely 3/8 of a inch wide, the ring is very heavy. thanks again for your help. Only guessing...Can you explain more about the engravers engraving a portion of a full arms. I know the four generations I have been able to find have all been engravers. One worked on engraving bank notes for Sprague & co. Ltd. in 1883. Does this help at all? Looking forward to learning more!

Some monuments relating to one of the families I am researching has what looks like a coat of arms with a dog on them. I have put some images on my web site at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/im.griffiths/parryfamilyhistory... and would be grateful for any answers to the questions there, about who the arms could relate to and why they are shown as they are.

Thanks
Assistance Required: Impaled Arms Henshaw & Unidentified

I am trying to identify the Arms of Elizabeth, wife of John Henshaw. The impaled Arms are on a memorial in Crondall Church, Hampshire. The only details from the memorial are;

John Henshaw Esq, son of Walter Henshaw, late of Clear Place. Died 10 Nov1789 aged 46. Also Elizabeth his wife, died 22 Nov 1816 aged 76.

The Henshaw Arms seem to match with an entry in Burkes GA for Henshaw (Great Marlow co. Essex and London). The only difference is that BGA has erm. (ermine) inthe blazon and the Arms are ermines. Which could just be one of the many errors in BGA.

Elizabeth's Arms appear to be;

Per fess sable and argent a pale countercharged. From the attached 'photo you can see that the Argent may be actually Or and the gold leaf has been rubbed off. There also could be a bird displayed upon the the sable portion of the Arms.

Any suggestions?

Does anyone know where I can get some more (preferably free) information about this name? Thank you so much.

Dear Heraldry Board and List Posters:

As of this morning the gateway between the board and the list has been opened.

This means that every post to the board will automatically be posted to the list. Those subscribed to the list are asked to either click the link in the post to reply on the board, or at minimum, to cc the original poster. Those that post to the board are not necessarily subscribed to the list.

The posts to the list get archived, as usual, and will not appear on the boards. Gatewaying is a one way process...
Board to list, but not back again.

I have also been asked to take on administration of the Heraldry list, and have agreed to do so.
Rospigliosi family coat of arms

Hi everybody,

I have a question about a specific coat of arms.

On this link (about some alleged prophecies of the popes) I read the following about Giulio Rospigliosi, Pope Clement IX: http://truecatholic.bizland.com/The_Prophecies_of_Malachy.ht...

"The Pope's family came originally from Lombardy where its ancient history is well recorded. The <Teatro Araldico>, a work which gives the armorial bearings of the most ancient and noble families of Italy, describes the Pope's family coat of arms as a shield on which was emblazoned a swan with stars overhead."

Now I looked on the internet for the coat of arms for the name "Rospigliosi", but could only find the coat of arms he used as pope. You can see it here: http://www.heraldique-europeenne.org/Regions/Italie/Rospigli...

So, apparently also some of his decendents have used his papal coat of arms, but no other design is listed.

Does anyone here know the origin of this coat of arms? Was it designed especially for Clement IX, when he became pope? Did he have a different family coat of arms before?

According to the website cited above a work called the "Teatro Araldico" describes such a family coat of arms with a swan with stars overhead on it. Does anyone know this work?
I think maybe it could be the case that the coat of arms shown there isn't even genuine, but was only designed by the author of the "Teatro Araldico", with the prophecy in mind - is that thinkable? How probable is this from an expert's point of view?

Any ideas how one could research all of this?

Thanks in advance and best regards,
an interested visitor

Silver Crest: image file attached

In 1971 when my wife and I visited London the first time, we bought a
12-piece complete setting of silver to replace ours that had been
burgled. We bought it in the silver vaults. There is a falcon crest on it.

4-5 years ago I bought a DVD on crests from a company in UK. It
identified my crest as belonging to an RN admiral, early 19th cent.
From the hallmarks, the silver is Victorian (1860-1880).

I gave the CD to local library so it could be generally available. I
have misplaced the information and the library has misplaced the CD. I
cannot find the publisher of the CD that I bought.

Can anyone identify the holder of the crest?
