Germany/Poland/ Russia to Liverpool 1850 passengers?

I have found my Gt Gt Grandfather Joseph Marks in the 1851 Census in Liverpool with this mother Emma. It says they came from Germany is there any way of finding out how he got to liverpool and where in Germany he came from? Any help would be great.
