Hello,

I'm searching for some information about Alois Franz Hischier.
He was born in 1870 in Oberwald, Wallis, Switzerland.
Together with his brother, Anton Hischier, he went to the USA at the end of 1880 beginning of 1890.
From New York they went to San Francisco.
It is possible that they were on the La Gascogne which arrived on Nov. 18. 1889 in New York, but we are not sure.
Anton Hischier went back to Switzerland around 1910, Alois stayed, as far as we know, in San Francisco.
Does anybody know anything about Alois Franz Hischier?

Thank you for any information.

Rianne van Vuuren
Switzerland
rianne_ch@hotmail.com

I'm looking to see if there are any ship records on my Prussian relatives. I don't know where exactly they are from, except possibly Berlin. Berlin was mentioned on my g-grandfathers census as to where his mother was from. I'm looking for Theodor SCHMIDT/SCHMITZ, b. abt 1804 in Prussia. His wife was Anna Maria (maiden name unknown), b. around 1819-1824 in Prussia. Daughters, Julia was born abt 1833, Mary A (Maria A.) was b. abt 1839-1841 and Elizabeth Louisa was born abt 1841-1843. They would have immigrated around 1841-1845. I don't know which port they came into or which port they left from. When they arrived the family went to Wisconsin. Any help is appreciated.

Found relatives on ships from Bremen, Germany to New York. Now what?

I have been looking for the immigration records of some German relatives (BOERNER,BRUNETZKI) for several years. I finally found the records today. The registers are from 1927 (Stuttgart) and 1928 (President Roosevelt) and list birthplace which was helpful. It also lists visa immigration numbers and city of issue. Is there something I can do with this data? In short, I guess what I'm trying to say is now that I have this information, what more can I do with it? I'm new to immigration records and don't know where to go from here.
The ship's name written on my ancestor's immigration papers is "Perzshim", which I'm sure must be a misspelling, as I can find no such name anywhere. Can someone possibly help me with this?
NEED CREW LISTS 1892-1905

HEllo my name is Jeniffer Baker/Ovatt. I have posted a few threads about my slovak Roots.. I just wanted to update anyone who is helping me research my family line. OVATT. Slovak family.. I found our yesterday that my Great grandfather John Ovat was a Steriage, or crew member on a few ships before he actually seTtled in the US. I have been looking for Ship Crew Lists Between 1890-1906. I know for sure he was settled in the US by 1906. So I believe he worked on the ships a few years until he made enough money to bring his wife Mary gemer/Jamer/Gamel? to the us and settle here. If anyone knows of any links to Crew Members of Ships between 1890-1906. I do not know what year or ship He worked on, but I know that John OVatt/Ovat was his name but Is was spelled european like Janos, or jan, ect. So I dont know the exact spelling.. I just need some help looking for Crew members Records for all Parts of the Eastern and Southern part of the US... Please let me know.. Thanks all you fellow Family Researchers!! Here is a copy of my past threads.. and family info...

(past Threads)

Hello my name is Jeniffer (Ovatt) Baker.. . My family came from the
Slovakia, Austrian Hungarian empire.. We dont have any immigration
information yet. All we know Is that My great great grandparents came
here to america areound 1900-1905. We know that they were supposedly
born in Austria, but everyone I have spoken too from their community in
Brookside, Warrior area of Alabama, they said they always were told they
were SLOVAK?? I need some help with my research I have access to many
websites,including a paid subscription to Ancestry.com, I have been at a
Brick Road with my family for about 4 years... I have found no census
record or any immigration.. I live in California and they lived in
Alabama from 1906 until their deaths.. I know that I have found many
typos in my family last name. OVAT. OVATT. Ovath. ect.. just to let you
know... Oh.. I know all the men in the family were Coal miners in
Kentucky and maybe other unknown states?? My main goal is to fnd
immigration and naturalization for my family... I need all the help I
can get.. have researched every website.. for years and anything you
find is all the information I have put online.. No other Ovatt's
exsist..Or it seems that way....
The Ovat/Ovatt's settled in Republic, Warrior, and Brookside areas of
Jefferson County, Alabama.
John and Mary are Buried at a
Catholic church in Brookside Alabama called St. Micheals.. They are
buried in
the part of the cemetary where the Slovensky familiy is Buried... I know
they had
some close friends of the last name "Harvella" and "Shima" .Maybe if
there are anyone in those families who know anything? I think that
they immigrated in between 1897 & 1905 maybe even through canada,
or the south..... I know that John and Mary were maybe married before
they came
to america, and the oldest son mike was born there also.. I believe....
John and Mary Spoke no english!
Here is a link to see A picture of
John & Mary Ovat along with Baptisal records , marriage, death records
for this family.

http://s257.photobucket.com/albums/hh222/PresleyLoveTCB/Ovat...

Husband: John Ovat/Ovatt
Birthdate: OCT 25 1872
Birthplace: Austria Death date: January 17 1936
Place of death: Warrior, Alabama
Burial: Brookside, Alabama
Father: UNKNOWN
Mother: UNKNOWN
Marriage date: UNKNOWN
Marriage place: Other Country

Wife: Mary (Maiden-Jemer/Gemer/Gamer??) / Ovat
Birthdate: Jan 1874
Birthplace: Austria Death date: March 14 1940
Place of death: Warrior, Alabama
Burial: Brookside, Alabama
Father: UNKNOWN
Mother: UNKNOWN

CHILDREN
Child No. 1: Mike Ovat
Sex: M
Birthdate: 1901?
Birthplace: other country
Death date: 03-30-1936 kidney problem
Place of death: pineville, Kentucky
Burial: unknown
Marriage date: unknown
Marriage place: kentucky
Spouse's name: Ella Moody

Child No. 2: Annie Ovatt
Sex: F
Birthdate: August 09 1906
Birthplace: Warrior, Alabama
Death date: February 25 1988
Place of death: Warrior, Alabama
Burial: Watts Union Cemetary
Marriage date: unknown
Marriage place: unknown
Spouse's name: Willie (Bill) Leonard Stover

(MY GREAT GRANDFATHER)
Child No. 3: George Andrew Ovatt/OVAT ??
Sex: M
Birthdate: January 07 1909
Birthplace: Warrior, Alabama
Death date: February 17 1978
Place of death: Warrior, Alabama
Burial: Watts Union Cemetary
Marriage date: Aug 7, 1930
Marriage place: Warrior, Alabama
Spouse's name: Trixie Mary Lowe/ later married
Annie Stover (willie stover's Sister)

Child No. 4: Mary Helen Ovat
Sex: F
Birthdate: September 22, 1914
Birthplace: Republic, Alabama
Death date: unknown
Place of death: Alabaster, Shelby county, Alabama
Burial: Tuesday, January 3, 1995
Marriage date: unknown
Marriage place: unknown
Spouse's name: unknown first name maybe AUBREY??
I was looking for a ship record for my family (the Kurland family) and, although I haven't had much luck, I did stumble upon what appears to be the ship record of a friend or brother-in-law possibly (Jankel Wasownik)...my family is supposedly from Ekaterinoslav, Russia (now Dniepropetrovsk, Ukraine). This related ship record lists the birth place as Catherinestadt which I couldn't find but I figured it meant Katharinenstadt. Is this the same place, but in a different language? Do both of these places mean Katherine's city? or something like that??? Does anyone know how or if these are related..and even more importantly...did Jews live there at any point? Katharinenstadt appears to be more Catholic and Christian in nature...but I guess they could have been simply living in the minority...?

Help!! What does it mean when a whole line is crossed out?

I think that I found some relatives on a ship's manifest, but all the lines are crossed out. I read where someone said that meant that they did not get on the ship. I cannot find any other record of them coming over later, and the following census records them as having come the year of the "crossed out manifest." Please help!!

Seeking info on ship SS Pedro Cristofferson

I'm trying to find info on the ship SS Pedro Cristofferson (possibly spelled incorrectly). According to the Naturalization record for my great grandfather(Algot W Nelson), he entered at Philadelphia, PA on Feb 18, 1917 aboard this ship. There is no passenger record for him. He was a Swedish sailor so I think that it might have been a merchant ship and not a passenger ship.

I am looking for my ancestor John Urban on the passenger manifests from the SS Moltke. His naturalization papers say he sailed from Hamburg on or about Dec 7, 1905 and that he arrived in New York on or about Dec 30, 1905. He may have changed his name to Urban. Family lore says it may have been Urbanowicz.

He was born in 1841. He was married to Elizabetha Deucker in Whitechapel in 1864.

Would Elizabetha have left from the same port?

BOOK: Flaggschiff BREMEN, The Story of a Ship's Dynasty by Edward Zimmermann

I bought this book because I believe someone will enjoy reading the history of the ships named BREMEN. This book is written in both English and German. There are pictures of each of the Bremen ships and how each came into existence. The book was written by Edward Zimmermann with no publishing date. It was printed in Germany.

There are wonderful details about Bremen V. There are descriptions of crew, engines, electric power supply, fresh water supply, air conditioning, nautical equipment, Radio equipment, stabilizers, safety equipment, and more.

Please contact me if you have an interest in this book.

Kathy Wieland in St. Louis, MO

Hi everyone! I'm looking for information on my ggrandfather John W. Walters who was born 1856 + - 1. He was born in LLangendeirne parish Carmarthenshire Wales, and emigrated I'm guessing between 1874 and 1888 which is pure guesswork. He had four childen by Margaret (Davis) Walters with their first born in 1890. Would like to know the date, ship and landing place if possible!
Thanks
David Walters

Noulletts came to Canada from Odessa 1912

Mike Noullett (Noullette) and his wife Katherine Fries(z)came to Canada from Kherson, and Nikolayiev (sp?) via Odessa in 1912, landing at Halifax first, then on to Montreal (I think), and then by rail to Alberta where they homesteaded with two other families -- the Urlachers and the Peters -- on a homestead they called the Neudorf Colony. This homestead was near Camrose and Bawlf, Alberta.

I am trying to find these families before they left Kherson, and trying to find out how a Noullette (from the Alsace province, I think) came to be in the Ukraine.

Also, my mother (a grandchild of Mike and Katherine) was a devout Catholic, yet her mother (Mike's son's wife) spoke Yiddish and her surname was Hearsch or Hirsch -- some Jewish in there somewhere -- and the Neudorf Colony seemed to reflect Mennonite culture --

so I am confused how these three religious groups came into one, before they all came to Canada.

Pat Bacon, Calgary, Alberta Mike's great grand-daughter.

My great grandparents immigrated from Hungary/Czechoslavkia in the early 1900s. I'm having trouble with them. I found the ship that my grandfather's parents came over on, but I can't find his father. His mother and sister are listed on Ellis Island but his father is not. His father was Josef/Joseph/Joszef Detvay and they would have come over around 1920.
My grandmother's parents are the same. I can't find a Josef/Joseph/Joszef & Susan/Susie Barta. They would have come over between 1913-1923 with three boys: Zigmunt, John, & Frank.
Any help you can give me would be great!!! I'd love to find my grandmother's maiden name. I think her mother's name was Esther Czaltas (sp?)

I am trying to find my great-great-grandfather Anthony Chorosevic. (Alternate spellings: Antony, Antoni; Horosevic, Horosewic, Horosewiecz)

He emigrated from Poland to the U.S. I have tracked down his Declaration of Intention from 1917, as well as a Census reference in 1930.

The DOI shows him as having arrived in the U.S. on Dec. 26, 1906 aboard the Pretoria from Hamburg Germany. His last foreign residence is listed as "Walschav, Russia" (Not sure about the spelling)

However, I cannot find an arrival of the Pretoria for this exact date.

Compounding the problem is that the census shows him as arriving in the U.S. in 1908.

I have searched a lot of Ellis Island (gold) and ancestry.com, but so far have had no luck finding him.

Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone able to do a lookup?

Looking for an image of ship from Hamburg

I'm looking for a picture of the ship "Scotia" that sailed from Hamburg. Below is the other info I found on the ship. I would like to include an image to my family history book that will be printed this fall.

SCOTIA / GRIMM / NORDSEE / DENISE 1890
Built by C. Connell & Co, Glasgow (engines by J.& J. Thomson, Glasgow)in 1890 as the GRIMM for the Hansa Line. Her dimensions were - 2,558 gross tons, length 320ft x beam 40.1ft, straight stem, one funnel, two masts, single screw and a speed of 11 knots. There was accommodation for 10-1st and 550-3rd class passengers. Launched on 20th May 1890, she sailed from Hamburg on her maiden voyage to Montreal on 19th Jul.1890. Her last voyage on this service started on 8th Oct.1891 and in March 1892 she was purchased by the Hamburg America Line. She commenced Hamburg - Montreal sailings for her new owners on 20th May 1892 and in 1895 was renamed SCOTIA. Her first sailing under this name started 27th Apr.1895 when she left Hamburg for Montreal and on 20th Nov.1895 she commenced her first Hamburg - Baltimore voyage. On 10th Nov.1898 she was chartered to the Red Star Line and started the first of two Antwerp - New York voyages and commenced Genoa - Naples - New York sailings for Hamburg America Line on 3rd Apr.1901. Her tenth and last voyage on this route started on 19th Oct.1902 and 1910 she was sold to Emil R. Retzlaff, Stettin. Surrendered to Britain in 1919, she was sold to W. Schuchman in 1922 and renamed NORDSEE. In 1924 she was purchased by Belgian owners and renamed DENISE and was scrapped in Italy in 1926. [North Atlantic Seaway by N.R.P.Bonsor, vol.1,p.399][Merchant Fleets by Duncan Haws, vol.4, Hamburg America Line]

Thank you for any help.

I am interested in a history of this ship, perhaps a drawing, or at least what it was similar to. Does anyone know of any resources that specifically have colonial ships that sailed from Rotterdam to Philadelphia (through Portsmouth)?

Looking for [emigration/immigration] info on Philip LEW b c1823 Switzerland. He supposedly arrived 1842 in NY & made his way to Pittsburgh via "the canal". I'm assuming that means Erie Canal but not certain; there were oodles of canals c1842.

Any ideas where I could look for additional information on emigration/immigration? It's possible he traveled with a brother, John, age unknown. Philip was trained as a shoemaker & was the son of John LEW, mother unknown. John, the father, remained in his native Switzerland. Unknown what became of the son, John.

The info I have is from a brief family history apparently written [c 1900] by a grandson of Philip: "Landing in New York, and going thence to Pittsburg making a portion of the journey by way of the canal"

Thanks in advance for any assistance or hints how to find Philip pre-1850 US census in Pittsburgh & his immigration. I have all the census info & can account for many descendants through present.

It's possible that at some point in time last name was LEU.

For years I have tried every variant to find her arrival at Ellis Island to no avail. Assuming she did disembark at 14th Street, I have heard differing opinons as to whether there would be a record at Ellis Island. I do know she had "red eye" upon arrival and they took her somewhere for quarantine.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

On it is listed May 1, 1907 as the date he arrived in the US (I've been told he came through Baltimore). I haven't been able to find his entry searching by name, so I'm hoping to to try to find a list of ships that may have arrived on or around that date and then search their manifests. How/where can I locate a list of these ships?

Finally found my great-grandfather/mother in the Hamburg direct-departure list database. I think the ship's name from the data is "Fortuna", but I am not sure as it is handwritten old-style German. I did find some information on a Fortuna but that info states it got shipwrecked in 1862 in the Bahamas. That ship did travel to the USA, England, Europe, Caribbean and South America over many years, but no mention of going to the USA in 1862. The Ancestry data bases do not list a Fortuna docking in the USA in 1862.

How would I find out more specifics of the itinerary for the Fortuna from 16 June 1862 in Hamburg until it shipwrecked later that year?

My ancestors are August and Emilie Hedtke. With them on board are brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews: Jacob, Louise, Ferdinand, Emilie, Heinrich, Mathilde, Theodore, Ludwig and Friedrich Hedtke. They all ended up in Carver County, Minnesota.

Can anyone help me out?

I have a great aunt Anna Forsberg. She has told me Stories of their crossing. They came in 1912. They were supposed to be on the Titanic but missed it for some reason. They started from Sweden. She has told me stories on the ship from when she was 5 and my grandmother was 3. She Just turned 100 and is still kicking strong. Very hard of hearing and her memory isnt what it used to be. She cant remember the ship name but remembers seeing the Titanic sink, their cant be to many people left that can say that. I cant find any ship lists for that time. On the ship their would have been: Anna Magdalena Forsberg 45 Nils August Verner Forsberg 14, Johan Forsberg 12, Helga 10, Mary 7, Anna 5, and my Grandmother Linnea Linda Forsberg 3. They left sweden went to England and came to Canada. I dont know if they got off in New York or in Canada.
If anyone can find anything It would greatly help.

Thank You
Brad
