Immigration record for Magdalena Schueler Boxler Wasinger

I've been looking for an immigration record / passenger list for my great-great-grandfather's 2nd wife. His name is Johannes (or John) Wasinger and he applied for a U.S. passport on January 9, 1890 to return to Russia to get a new bride. He met and married Magdalena Boxler (maiden name was Schueler) and supposedly they brought 3 of her children back to the United States. I only know two of their names -- Elizabeth & Conrad Boxler -- and so I'm hoping to find this record to confirm their arrival and to find the name of the third. One public member has his name as Michael Boxler, all others only list two children for Magdalena. I've looked and looked with no luck. Only to find a 1920 census with her name listed as Magthalena Wasingeer and that her immigration year was 1890. Any help would be appreciated!

I am having problems locating an Immigration Passenger List. I think the NY Passenger List on this site said that it included up to 1940? Can't remember right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am a descendant of of Johannes J. Braun & Anna Katharina Pfeifer that settled in Victoria (Herzog) Kansas. I have genealogy that lists them as immigrating from Russia to New York, New York on the SS Elbe. Their arrival date was March 16, 1892. Other family members listed for immigrating at the same time are as follows:

Joseph J. Braun and his wife Barbara (Mermis)
Their son Joseph Braun
Their daughter Katharina Braun
Ott-Bessinger

I am looking for Otts and Bessingers from Russia to NE and MI (primarily Arenac, Saginaw, Huron and Tuscola Counties).

I know I am related to Henry Bessinger m. Lydia Sherer or Frehling and Georg Bessinger m. to Mary (unknown) b. approx. 1874. These are my great grandmother Katherine Margarete Bessinger's brothers. She was b. 1872, m. Jacob Ott and had children Mary Elisabeth, Katherine Margaret, Elizabeth Katherine, Henry, Jacob, Caroline Juliane and Viola Amanda. Brother Henry had children Henry, Georg, Gottfried, August, Lyida, Emma and Anna. Georg had children Alexander and Louise (probably had more children). I am looking for their parents' names. They were from Kukkus and Stahl am Tarlyk, Russia. Henry came to the states in 1898, Katherine in 1902 and Georg in 1907.

Jacob Ott had brother Philip b. May, 15, 1875, d. 1959 and married Mathilda Firchau. They had children Philip, Gottlieb, Julius, Carl, Adolf, Rosina, Freida, Emma, Martha, and Wilhem. They lived in Frankenmuth and Reese areas. Philip came to the states in 1907 with cousin Adam Schrader. Jacob Ott paid their passage. Jacob's father is listed as John (probably Johannes).

If anyone knows these Otts and Bessingers or is related to them, please contact me.

Suzanne

Waltz, Walz from Ukraine.

Hello, I'm looking WALZ (maybe WALTZ) families.

My grandma - MARIA WALTZ (WALZ) (b. 190x, d. 1974).
Before WWII her family lived in Ukraine (near Dnepropetrovsk city). I don't known names of her mother or father, sorry...
She married KUZMA CHAYUKOV.

They had two children- daughter Ludmila (my mother, 1936-2002) and son Alexander (my uncle, b. 193x).

Maybe someone knows WALZ (WALTZ) or Chayukov families from Ukraine (Dnepropetrovsk), please help...

Few days ago I found information about Piotr (Peter) Walz (b. 1912) which was born from Shchorsk (~50km from Dnepropetrovsk). He was soldier at war and was killed in 1944. Maybe this man was from same family as my grandmother?

Thank you.

P.S. When my mother LUDMILA CHAYUKOVA was alive once time tell me name of village where they lived... she said that this place was about ~40km from Dnepropetrovsk. I was little boy I don't remember now exactly.... but it was german name (like Neuedorf, Neubach or smth..) not russian (not like Andreyewka, Golubewo or smth...)
Family stories said we had Jewish ancestors who fled anti semitic feeling elsewhere, but nothing more than that!

It is the only time this surname appears on Ancestry site, and I suspect my relative didnt know exactly how to spell or possibly pronounce the surname correctly.
Dietrich Hinsch emigrated 1889 from Hamburg

Dietrich Hinsch (born 1858) emigrated from Hamburg, Germany on 9/6/1889. He was a saddler by trade and a Russian by nationality. His wife Auguste Ahrens Hinsch (born 1856)came over on 1/2/1890 with sons Nicolaus - 9 years and John - 2 months. She was a Prussian. They lived in Brooklyn, NY until their deaths which I am not sure of (pre 1920?). The family lore I have is that Dietrich was German. Are there any sites that have information on Germans in Russia or Russian immigrants.

These are my great grandparents. They were Germans from Anap, Russia and came to the US in 1900 with at least 1 daughter, Lydia. A son may have died on the voyage. They went to Woodward, OK and had several more children, Elsie Semmel (my grandmother) being one. Phillip died in 1915 and I am trying to find out the cause of death. He had a 1 year old and was only in his late 30's early 40's. Rosina lived until around 1956. Actually, any information about them would be greatly appreciated. I would love to know why they came to Oklahoma when most of the Semmels who came to the US stayed in the NY, PA area.

Help with first name.

Today I received a copy of the divorce action papers filed by my Grandfather's first wife with the circuit court in Stone County, MO in 1899. The family story is she and her family were from Russia, but were Germans. They were originally from the Perleberg area of Germany, where my family came from, and when expelled from Russia, came to Stone County, MO. where my GGrandfather lived.

The daughter helped with housework for my Great Grandmother and in 1895, she and Grandpa married.

At one time the Stone County Missouri web site had their marriage listed and her name was "Callie", short for Caroline. The divorce papers show her name as "Caroline". However, when she signed the oath, she signed her actual name as "Casolucr" with uhmlaut over the "u". Her writing is terrible, perhaps because the English alphabet was new to her.

Is such a name, or something similar possible for a German woman coming from Russia?

I hoped to find her family name in the court record, but the action was never followed up. The family says she left a family in Russia and the immigration people picked her up and deported her back to Russia. Does this sound reasonable?
Grandpa said the marriage was annulled for this reason.

Any help or direction for my search will be very much appreciated.

Paul

Noulletts came to Canada from Odessa 1912

Mike Noullett (Noullette) and his wife Katherine Fries(z)came to Canada from Kherson, and Nikolayiev (sp?) via Odessa in 1912, landing at Halifax first, then on to Montreal (I think), and then by rail to Alberta where they homesteaded with two other families -- the Urlachers and the Peters -- on a homestead they called the Neudorf Colony. This homestead was near Camrose and Bawlf, Alberta.

I am trying to find these families before they left Kherson, and trying to find out how a Noullette (from the Alsace province, I think) came to be in the Ukraine.

Also, my mother (a grandchild of Mike and Katherine) was a devout Catholic, yet her mother (Mike's son's wife) spoke Yiddish and her surname was Hearsch or Hirsch -- some Jewish in there somewhere -- and the Neudorf Colony seemed to reflect Mennonite culture --

so I am confused how these three religious groups came into one, before they all came to Canada.

Pat Bacon, Calgary, Alberta Mike's great grand-daughter.

Heffels from Dobrinka to the US

Good morning to all,

I'm looking to make connections with others researching the Heffel family, Germans from Dobrinka, Russia. I would love to find relatives of a Heffel that fought either in World War II or the Korean War for the US Navy; and was either an admiral or another high rank officer. That gentleman was my great-grandfather's nephew, son of his long lost brother.

My g-grandfather and his family migrated to Argentina in 1905, and at least one of his brothers (father of that US Navy veteran) came to the US instead. I would love to re-connect with those relatives in the US and any other potential family members.

Best regards,

Karina Heffel
I am searching for my biological grandparents or aunts/uncles. Left Germany (Prussia) before the 1950's probably 1940's came to America with a changed Russian surname "Pervich" (possible other spellings).

My father was born in 1950’s as Wolf Pervich (possible other spellings also) in Illinois, youngest of other children (I think 6), likely of Jewish decent. He was adopted by an American family who changed his name and we don't know his real surname, so we don't have much information.

Any help or leads would be apreciated.

I found an entry that he is mentioned in the 1900 Census for
the Cleveland area in Cuyahoga County Cleveland Township.
The Taiga-family had a boarder age 23 whose name was Edward Schrul. The father is stated as born in Poland (Rus) and his wife was born in Germany.
Since I haven't come across any other Edward Schruls in the US I think there is a chance that he might be the one I am looking for.
I would love to hear from anybody who has additional information. I have lots of Schrul-information on Edwards ancestors and distant cousins. My grandmother was his first cousin once removed.
Thanks for any help!
Martina

I am searching for info on my Wambold(t) and Jung ancestors, who were in Wiesenmueller in the 1800s and early 1900s. My gr-randmother was Maria Katharina Jung, daughter of Eva Sittner & Johannes Jung. Maria Kath.married my gr-grandfather Alexander Wambold(t) in Oshkosh, WI in 1913. He immigrated to the USA abt 1912. Maria and their son, Alexander Jr. cam the next year. They eventually settled in Detroit, MI. Alexander Sr possibly had brothers named Georg & Freidrich, both witnessed the wedding in Oshkosh. Maria and Alexander Sr had 3 other children: August, Rose and "Fritz" (possibly Frederick).

I found my Seelinger relatives. Thanks to all who helped. However the Bukowskys are still somewhat "lost." I've learned that the family sailed from Libau to Liverpool. Enroute the two youngest children died from measles. On the manifest of the ship (Campania) they were supposed to take leaving Liverpool, June 04, 1904 for NY, all nine members have their surname spelled correctly BUKOWSKY. Due to the deaths, they didn't take that ship. They are then listed on the Ivernia to Boston leaving July 19, 1904. They didn't make that ship either due to the death of one more child. Here the surname is BukEwsky. One death in Liverpool is listed as Bukowsky, the other as BOGASKY. I've tried every name spelling I can imagine;I cannot find the ship they eventually took. Can anyone help? They were in Canada by mid August.
Florence

Hello, I am looking for informtion about Anton Wandler, b-19 Jun 1855 in Rastadt, Russia, d-7 Jun 1929 in Schefield, North Dakota. He married Magdalin Fischer in 1878 in Rastadt. His father's name, I think, was Joseph Wandler, b-1805 in Holschloch, Germany. His mother was Marian Immel or Zimmel possibly. Anton had a sister named Rose who was born 7 May 1870. These dates just don't seem to add up and I'm confused! Joseph would have been 65 when his daughter Rose was born!! Anyway, any ideas or information would greatly be appreciated! Thanks!

(dumb) Ellis Island Question

Hi all,

Please excuse this really dumb question, but I'm stumped.

I've done a lot of research on _my_ family background, so I know my way around the Ellis Island database, and know enough about emigration from Germany.

But now I've started to work on my husband's genealogy, and right off the bat I'm stumped! According to the 1930 Census from the Bronx, hubby's grandfather, Sidney Nast, was born in Russia around 1891, spoke Russian as a first language, and emigrated to the US in 1913.

Could he still be a German from Russia even if he spoke Russian, not German? Or does his language mean he's a 'real Russian'?

But now for the real question that I'm almost embarrassed to ask:
Family stories recount his first view of the US from on board ship - supposedly it was Hoboken, NJ.

But I've come up with no hits from Ellis Island's database. Can anyone tell my why it's not there, and where I might go next for info? I saw something about first-class passengers being checked on-board the ship in those days - does that mean they wouldn't be on the Ellis Island list? (None of _my_ ancestors could afford first class, but we don't know about this guy, so it's a topic I don't understand.)

I have an ancestry.com subscription, and I only found one hit for this guy, even using soundex and lots of other permutations (S Nast, Sid Nast, etc.) - the only hit was the 1930 census.

Thanks in advance for helping me figure this out!
Elizabeth

However on his naturalization papers he cites "Kunyon, Russia" as his birthplace. Of course, this is probably a phonetic spelling. He was ethnically German and his family may have been Volhynians. Is the place name - or a similar placename - familiar to anyone?

Kirschbergers in the "Schwedengebiet" near Odessa, c. 1870

This one is more Ukrainian than Russian; hope I'm not out of bounds here.

I'm researching the family of my wife's gggrandfather, Carl August Kirschberger (they adopted the spelling "Kerchberger" later), who immigrated to the US in 1876 with his wife, believed to be named Barbara Alber or Albert. He lived in the village of Muhlhausen in the "Schwedengebiet" enclave near Odessa around 1870, when his children Helena and Rudolf were born, but he does not seem to show up in the "Catholic Index" of this area at pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/villages/link, to which I have been directed. This isn't a big surprise, at least if "Catholic" implies church affiliation, since they were known to be Lutheran. Carl August listed his birth on the immigration records as in Prussia, so possibly he hadn't been in the Schwedengebiet for long when his children were born; Barbara, by contrast, listed her birthplace as Russia.

Any suggestions for pursuing these folks? I've been unable to detect them in any on-line compilations of the Schwedengebiet. Any help appreciated!

Eick's immigrated from Germany late 1880's, early 1890's

I am seeking leads on my g-grandfather, b. abt. 1850 in Germany who immigrated to US and settled in MI abt. 1890.
His name was Charles Eick, and he may have been married to a Lena Lipke. Charles' parents may have been John and Marie Eick. Charles had children Edward and Conrad, Ida and Richard and Walter Eick. Edward and Conrad were born Dec. 7, 1884 in Warsaw, Russia. Anyone have any ideas where I can seek solid leads. I have no documentation of them before 1898, when Charles Eick remarried to an Ida Friendt in MI. I have not found them at Ellis Island, probably because they came over just a little too early. Haven't found them on ISTG either.

Info on great grandparents

Seeking info on David and Rosalia (Lowenthall) Cahn both born in 1834 in Russia. Have not found them on any passenger ships lists so far. I do not know where in Russia they are from but beings Cahn is not a Russian name, I imagine they are from a community of Germanys. Any link to info would be appreciated. They supposedly came to the US around late 1850's. Thanks in advance for any clues.

German Russian Orphanages 1890s

I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions. My great grandfather was born in 1893 in the village of Huck. He has always told my grandmother that he was adopted as a baby.

His name is Jacob Jacoby and I have several documents showing his fathers name as Conrad Jacoby.

From what I have read about Huck and other villages I'm guessing it was probably not an adoption as I know it in present time.

Was it common for the children to be taken in by family as opposed to an orphanage? If he was taken in as a baby does that mean his real last name is probably not Jacoby nor is his real father Conrad? I have hit a brickwall and I'm starting to wonder if this may be the reason. I would assume an adopted child would not be on a Pleve chart for the adoptive family... what about the biological family?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Phillip Fuchs was born July 3, 1863 in Pelvesta or Pelvestal, (unsure of the spelling) So. Russia. Married Doradea Salzer in 1892. They left Russia in 1903 and settled in Ashley, North Dakota, then Pollock, South Dakota. They then moved to what is now Grant County, North Dakota. I believe he died in Carson, ND. I have been unable to find him in any records, census, SSI or passenger lists. I can't find an obit. I'd like to find out who his parents were, how many children were born to them, or any of the above mentioned things.

Herrmann's from Russia

Need help to find my great-grandfather and grandmother from Russia to U.S.
My great-grandfather was Conrad E. Herrmann, who was from a place called Illovlinski (according to my Aunt). He came to this country in the late 1800's from Russia. He was indentured in North Dakota, then moved to California, via Colorado.
It was the same with my great-grandmother, Nadalena Martch or Martsch (maybe Martsh). She came from Rosenfeldt, Russia, possibly came over at the same time as Conrad, indentured in North Dakota, etc. Conrad and Lena were married in North Dakota (I believe Fessenden). The had 13 or more children, but many of them died young. Known children are Ben, Fred, Freda, Lydia, Lucille, and Conrad, my grandfather. Any help would be very much appreciated.
