Name change of Polish immigrants during World War 2.

Hi,

I'm beginning to look into my grandfathers family history but have very little information. I have his name and date of birth but that's about all. I know he came over to Scotland from Poland or Lithuania during or soon after WW2 and changed his name to its direct translation in England so I have a rough idea what it could be from looking on the internet. Can anyone else offer me any other advice. I know he had brothers and sisters but he never mentioned them so its possible they got spilt up or left behind but it would be good to find out.

German Immigrants from Elberfeldt Germany to NY or PA

I am looking for Immigration information on Heinrich/Henry Unger and his wife Maria (Scherman) Unger.

Heinrich/Henry Unger who was born Nov. 26, 1852, in Elberfeld Germany (suburb of Dusseldorf). He married in Germany in 1874, to Maria Schermann (spelling of maiden name may be incorrect).

He Immigrated to the US in 1885, I believe through NY and became an American Citizen on October 22, 1891.

Henrich and Maria had 8 known children. Heinrich/Henry died on May 25, 1915 in Buffalo NY and is buried at Concordia Cemetery.

Any help and/or shared info. is greatly appreciated.

Russian immigrants 1890 - 1900

Can anyone please tell me, is there any record of Russian Jewish immigrants to London on the period 1890 - 1900. I have relatives that appear in the 1901 census as Russian but not in the 1891 census.

Is there anyway to track them down?

Working in Venezuela

I'm not sure where to post this question... I hope someone can suggest likely travel routes.

My guncle worked in the oil business in Venezuela. He was born in the Straits Settlements i~1900 and would likely have left from England, possibly Southampton (two brothers left for Canada from there). I suspect he may have travelled between the two areas a few multiple times.

If checking passenger lists, I'm wondering which ports of call I should be looking at.

How to find a passport photograph?!

I know this is probably a very long shot....

Ive been researching my family history of (Norman Llewellyn) DOWNING who went to America in the 1920s. Ive found an application for a passport on Ancestry that he submitted and would love to find the accompanying photo (in the scanned image, there is photo on the left hand page of someone who was presumably on the page before my ancestor) and in the small print it says that a photograph must accompany the entry....so...I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about how I would go about finding the next page with (hopefully) Norman Downing's photograph on it. Subsequent passport searches have proved fruitless!

"Ph Def Cert" on a record of aliens held for special inquiry

I found this notation on a "record of aliens held for special inquiry" a relative was detained , hospitalized then deported
the notes said LPC- Likely Public Charge" and then "Ph Def Cert"
he was hospitalized then released a few days later but after this process he was deported and I don't know why?
can anyone help me?

im hoping there is someone please who can help me or point in the right direction, i too have found some names that baffled me until i got them checked out and someone wonderfull people gave me the correct spellings as far as they know.
the problen is my grt x 3 grand father was a Frank miller, so thru my searching for millers i came to a stand still as i have now gt death cert for him that states he was formally MINCYINSKAS? ( not sure could be changed again) i have been told from russia??? then i found a victoria miller who does appear on franks death cert( dont know who she is). she had also changed her name as her husband too. her name was VITTORIJA TERUSEVYCUS MARRIED ALBERT TERUSEVYCUS. SHE DIED IN SCOTLAND GLASGOW IN 1942 27TH APRIL AND WAS 52. HER MAIDEN NAME WAS RETEVYCUS. I WANTED TO FIND OUT WHEN AND WHERE THEY EMIGRATED FROM AND TO EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THEY ENDED UP IN SCOTLAND. SO MANY MANY THNX IF YOU CAN HELP.

Emigration age = Church Bk - Passanger List - Obit right

A ship passanger list shows age 16 that matches obituary but a church book find shows birth 2 years later - Question - would age have been stated as 16 so that a chuld alone could emigrate and would they maintain that fib through life. Left in 1854 ?

jacki here, just wondered ifyou could help. i have found my grtx3 grand fathers death cert from scotlands people, which states that he changed his name from something like MINSCYINSKAS to miller.
hi dob was bout 1861 could be russia.i found him in 1901 northumberland newcastle with wife mary, who has also changed her name from PODENSKEY.
SHE WAS BORN ABOUT 1850ISH i believe in russia.
as stated on the cen frank was then living with children mary dead, i have tryed to search the london archives at kew but nothing is comming up, im not sure if i doing this right. i dont know where or how i can find out when they came to england adn why mary children wee not living with then only after she died.please can u help.

the very idea of this is intriging to me, since we face a brick wall with a name Denalsano. Supposedly Walto L Denalsano was born off the coast of Managua Cuba in 1861, birth records state St Augustine Florida, another record states he was born in Cuba, yet another record says Mexico, and we find nothing that prooves anyhting to us. We find no place of origin for the Name Denalsano,
have seen it spelled Denalsano, Delsano, De Nalsano

Name changes during/after immigration - CHRABASZCZEWSKI / CHRABOWSKI

I wasn't quite sure where to post this question, but this forum seems pretty active and it could be immigration related, so I thought I'd try....

How, officially, did individuals change the spelling of their surnames?

For example, I have the surname CHRABASZCZEWSKI on a funeral card that was found after my grandmother passed away.

I believe this person to be the same or related to an individual with the surname CHRABOWSKI. So somewhere along the line, their name was obviously shortened/changed.

What are the possibilities of when and where this name change oficially took place? Where would the record of the change be found? Or were records kept of such changes?

When individuals came through the various ports into the US did they require identification?

I'm very new to researching my family's genealogy, but I have a pretty good start. I've been finding that some of the variations in spelling with the surnames that I'm researcing are simply transcription errors. But the one I list above is clearly not that.

If there is a resource that someone knows of, such as a website, that talks about how names where changed and how the changes were documented during or after immigration to the US I would be so grateful for a link!

Germany to England

I've recently learned that my Great Grandfather Phillip Deung was born in Germany and eventually ended up in England. This may be a really dumb question but if someone left Germany going to England is this considered "immigrating" and if so where can I go to find out when he went to England. Most sites are from Europe to the US and most German sites are in German that I do not understand.
Phillip was born in 1863 in Bad Kreuznach Germany and his first marriage took place in 1888 in England. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

Passport information

Does anyone know why a passport would be stamped on right side as "Passport Destroyed" with a date and initials? Right now I am assuming that this was due to death. But hate to assume with genealogy and under what circumstances would a death be report to the passport department?

Death on board ship?

Is it possible to find out if a child died during a sailing to New Zealand. I have a 9 month old Allingham child on the passenger list in 1874 - I understand the list has been double checked at National Archives here in NZ and is accurate according to details at departure, but can find no further record of this child. I suspect a death on board. Does anyone know how this information can be sourced.

Hi All,

I have stumbled on a fascinating clue about my family, but I'm at a loss how to extend it.

I found a ship's manifest showing two of my ancestors coming to Boston from Liverpool. They were identified as American citizens on this manifest, which is consistent with other information I have on their birth circumstances. The return journey was in September of 1906.

My question is, what could I try to locate their OUTBOUND trip? What sort of records were kept around this time for US citizens' travel; should I look for information on the Liverpool end of this trip on the two sisters? They are Swedish-American relatives; they list their last residence as in Jonkoping, in Sweden. Would there be some sort of records I could consult regarding their stay there (they reported their occupation as "servant" but didn't seem to be travelling with their mistress or employer).

I have a family member, Catherine Dilworth , traveling from Ireland to Cambridge Ma, to her dau,Mrs. O'Brien, in 1906. The person right above her is William Dynan, states he is traveling to his brother Philip Dynan in Cambridge Ma. Philip Dynan was married to another Dilworth daughter. Philip has been dead for 4 years by 1906. On the manifest it states that Catherine is senile. I am trying to figure out if he is traveling with his brother's mother in law? Would they have allowed a person with senility to travel by herself? I never heard of William until I just discovered this manifest.

Any thoughts as to how a Jewish couple might get from Novozhytomyr (near Odessa, Ukraine) to Paris, France, c.1889?
I know my ancestors were married in Odessa in August 1888, and their son was born in Paris in December 1892. Their daughter Clara is believed ot have been born in Odessa in 1889.
I have not found any information about even possible immigration routes in this part of the world. Any thoughts?

Any one have (access to) Tepper's Baltimore Passengers:1820-34?

The full title is "Passenger Arrivals at the Port of Baltimore 1820-1834, from Customs Passenger Lists", ed. Michael H. Tepper. This book is currently out-of-print, and I can't find a copy.

According to the Ancestry.com database, this book has information on Daniel Imhoff (transcribed Danl Imhoof) and his sons Peter and Martin, who arrived in the port of Baltimore in 1832. I would like to know more (date of arrival, departure city, name of ship, etc.)

Does anyone have access to this book? Does the book have only the year and name of passenger (as in the Ancestry database), or does it include the information I am seeking?

If anyone could tell me where I can get a copy, I would appreciate it. If you have the book and can look up Danl Imhoof, I'd appreciate it even more!

unknown term "Per____ent Settlers"

I found my Hungarian ancestor, arriving on the Westernland in 1891. At the right edge of the page, all are listed as "Per_____ent Settlers". Does anyone know what this term is, and what it means? I looked at the pages before and after, but still can't make it out. Thanks.

Can someone please lookup the info for ship- Labrador arrived NYC July 07,1880 left Le Harve family name is Hollemer. I have found the listing on the castlegarden site but the info is slightly off. I want to compare the orginal with what I have.If it is possible to scan and e-mail the manifest of Hollemer that would be great. The correct name spelling is Follmer ,Jean and Sophie and 7 children. PLEASE help.
