Abiel Titus....LOYALIST

As I try to correct/confirm Abiel's marriage record I have come accross some interesting material that I have NOT seen talked about in any forums before concerning Abiel (b. 1751/52) I was wondering if anyone has any additional information with regard to Abiel's Loyalist activities. Interestingly he was a very visable citizen of Brooklyn after the war....a member of the first FDNY in Brooklyn, friends with the Van Nostrand's and Leffert families etc...

Excerpts below are from A History of the City of Brooklyn including the Old Town and Village of Brooklyn, theTown of Bushwick, and the Village and City of Williamsburgh, vol. II , by Henry R. Stiles.

Document 1. People and Buildings from Guy’s “Snow Scene of Brooklyn in 1820” On the corner of Front Street and the Old Road was the large and very old (wood) frame building. It was occupied as a hardware store by Thomas W. Birdsall and Joel Bunce. Above Birdsall’s corner was the residence of Abiel Titus. It was a small dwelling (house) with a narrow front on Fulton Street. In the picture, Titus is feeding his chickens in the gateway of the yard between his house and barn. He supported the loyalist side during the revolution and was servant to a major in the British army. Later he was a butcher.

Also found a rare reference to "my" Theodore..Abiel's grandson and son of Ira

Brooklyn, New York General & Business Directory for 1840-41.

Brooklyn:
T. & J. W. Leslie & W. F. Chichester, 1840

TINKER, Henry, grocer, 131 Nassau
TITUS, Abiel, 128 Prospect
TITUS, Ancel, crockery store, 114 Fulton
TITUS, Edward H., printer, 20 York
TITUS, F.R., china & glass store, 158 Fulton
TITUS, James, butcher, 1 Brooklyn Market, h 131 Sands
TITUS, Rich.E., Green lane c Prospect
TITUS, Sam., merchant, Cheever place
TITUS, Theodore, butcher, 192 Pearl
TITUS, Thos.W., inspector of customs, Jackson n Lafayette

Can anyone tell me whether UE Loyalists where ever known to change their names after settling in Canada?

I'm thinking of a case where a Loyalist family, or perhaps descendants of a Loyalist, may have wanted to return to the U.S.

Thanks.

Jane

UEL Loyalist from Cambridge NY to Wolford Ontario Canada

Looking for resource were I maybe able to locate records from the Cambridge NY area specifically around White Creek. Property Confiscations is my interest, I have a 5th Great Grandfather who fought at the Battle of Bennington as a member of what has been identified as the Queens Loyal Rangers. He survived the battle and was forced to leave the US with the other loyalists, his property was seized along with that of his brothers and an in-law, Arent Van Corlaer, the orignal land grant of 1761 was in his name. It appears that the battle it self was fought on their land, I'm trying to establish that, with some documentary evidence.

Richard Lang, Loyalist South Carolina

Need help tracing my RICHARD LANG, sometimes spelled LONG, during the Revolution.
Richard Lang was b. abt. 1744 the son of Robert and Millicent Lang of Saluda, S. C. He was a Loyalist and served in the "NINETY SIX BRIGADE" with Major Patrick Cunningham's Little River Regiment in 1780. He is listed as private. In 1782 he is in Major William Cunningham's Troop of Mounted Militia along with his son (some say brother) Isaac Lang. Both are listed as privates. He is later listed as a Capt. in William Cunningham's troop of Mounted Militia. There is also a Captain Richard Long, and Isaac Lang listed in Lieut. Colonel William Young's Corps, Little River Militia as one point in 1782. I believe this may be one and the same as my Richard Lang.

I have read where a Capt. Lang of the Dragoons cut off one of Major John "Silverfist" Lindsay's hands during the Battle of Camden. Is there anyway to determine if this Capt. Lang is one an the same as my Richard Lang? Richard Lang later goes to Spanish East Florida and leads a very exciting life during Florida's so called " French Rebellion" in 1793- 1795. He later lives out his life in Camden Co., Georgia.
I would like to know more of Richard Lang during the Rev. but not sure where to go from hers.
Thanks for any help,
Roger
John Hause/John George Schaeffer-Loyalists or Hessians?

this is a bit of a wild shot because I'm short of data, but let me spin this past you and see what you may think.

I have two Waterloo, Ontario men that I'm researching at this time, b. a bit late for the war of independance, perhaps, but maybe in the war of 1812?

no data, but their names were

John Hause/Haase and his wife Mary
John George Schaeffer/Schaffer and his wife Catherine

I have no access to the church records in Ontario, but I know for certain that John Hause/Hasse was a Lutheran and assume that John George Schaeffer/Schaffer was a Lutheran as well.

John Hause/Hasse's son George was b. abt 1838 in Waterloo. I have some census records for George which says his father was b. in Pennsylvania. I don't know if this is true, but there are tons of Haase's in early PA. it's possible that John or his father were indeed of PA.
John George's daughter, Catherine lists her parents as born in Ontario in her census records.
can anyone tell me anything about these people. I have a fair amount of information on George and his descendants, and his 1871 census data and 1865 marriage data, but nothing prior to 1865.

PLEASE HELP -info really wanted about loyal orange lodge 134 in Cumberland 1900s

I'm trying to find out about Margaret Jones nee Richardson's connections with the orange order; she was my great grandmother and was a member of the loyal orange lodge 134.

She was born in Carlisle in about 1875; she married Frank Jones in Liverpool in 1893; after a short while in Chester they moved back to Workington and raised their family in the area. Margaret died in Frizington near Workington in 1949.

Her parents were James Richardson and Mary Richardson nee Forrest; they married in 1862. Mary came from Annan, and was daughter of Thomas Forrest and Margaret S Forrest nee Carruthers. We do not know about James's parents or origins.

Margaret Jones nee Richardson was buried in Harrington cemetery, Workington on 28/07/1949. She was a member of the loyal orange lodge 134. Brethren of the loyal orange lodge acted as bearers and the grand master,Brother T Clague,
gave the sermon.

Does this lodge have records and if so where would they be? I would really like to know about Margaret's involvement with the order,if this is possible; who the stretcher bearers were and why they did this important job; and why the grand master gave the sermon. We know nothing about her involvement with this group.

I would be really grateful if you could help me or pass this message to someone able to answer it.

John Taylor of Thurlow - Hastings

John Taylor was one of the first settlers in Belleville. He is listed in the UEL Registry. He is recorded in numerous publications including: City of Belleville History, Historic Hastings, History of the Settlement of Upper Canada. His genealogy is not recorded in Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte. In the History of Upper Canada there are a few pages dedicated to him. (pgs 122-125) These pages describe his brothers, Neil and Daniel, who were executed as spies in the revolutionary war. They also indicate that Sheriff George Taylor was the son of John. They also indicate that John returned to Kinderhook NY to bring his mother back to Thurlow. John married the daughter of a UEL by the name of Russel. John was 14 years old when the war broke out. That would put his birth date around 1762. His son, Sheriff George Taylor, is listed in the Lowell directory for Hastings in the year 1871 as sheriff. George Taylor is recorded as being born around 1915 and his death is recorded in 1889 in Hastings. Pioneer Life records his daughter as Mary Ann who married Jacob Cronk UEL. Mary Ann Taylor may have been born in the 1790's. If John was born in 1762 and his son George was born in 1815 John would have been around 55 years old at that time. Does anyone know any more of his this man??? Does any one know who Sheriff George Taylor was married to or his offspring?? Any help will be appreciated

I am hoping to find someone who could check the sources for my GGF Amos Low (also spelled Lowe). I believe he was born in PE County in about 1821. He is listed in the 1848/1850 Canada West, Murray, Northumberland. In 1851 he was listed in the Agricultural Census Enumeration District No. 2. He is listed as Church of England/Anglican in the Northumberland East 1871 census and died in Dummer, Peterborough Cty. in 1882. I believe his brother was named James who may have been born aboard ship to Canada.
My major interest is who his parents were as I have reached a dead end here. I am in Washington State so I would greatly appreciate anyone who would be willing to assist.
Thank you so much.

Hi have just established that i'm related to a William Wright b c1740 in NY (where??), who was a Loyalist and came to NB in 1783 and settled at Grand Bay in Westfield Parish, Kings County, New Brunswick.

Known son is Solomon Wright b 1784 and wife Susannah Hunt b abt 1743 Westchester County, NY

As I'm actually based in UK I can't get to any of the sources - so was wondering if anyone had any more info of William's family, arrival, or previously his service as a Loyalist in what I assume is Westchester County, NY - anyone have any more data on Susannah or her parents?

I'm aware that Susannah remarried a John Lawson after Williams death in 1785 - but can't find any records of that.

The only other siblings of Solomon that I have is a James Wright b 1771 who m. Elizabeth Purdy b. 1775 at North Castle, NY, died 1857: came to NB and first settled in Westfield Parish, Kings County: later moved to Canterbury Parish, York County and a Phebe b 1769 m John Buckhout

Thanks in advance
ADAM FOX, A LOYALIST?

I am researching a woman named Eliza Cofell, born in 1885 in Ontario. Her father was William Cofell, son of Philip Cofell Sr., from Sutton, England, and Elizabeth Fox, born 10 April 1806 in Essex county, Ontario, Canada. Elizabeth's parents were supposed to be Adam Fox, born 12 December 1783 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, and Mary Snider, born 1786 in Frederick, Maryland, USA. I believe this Adam Fox is the one who is supposed to be the UEL. Does anyone have any information they can direct me to? If I make the statement about that in the story about his great granddaughter, I'd like to confirm that it is true! Need some help!

Hello, Anyone who can help point me in the right direction here?

I have two loyalist ancestors and I'm having great trouble coming up with proofs for my loyalist application. I need primary sources to prove the following:

Eliza ROBLIN (1815-1886) was the daughter of Levi ROBLIN (1793-1878)

and/or

John Trompour CURLETTE (1808-1889) was the son of Christina "Tina" TRUMPOUR (1785-?)

They were born married and died in the Sophiasburgh area of Prince Edward Country. Levi and Tina were children of loyalists and got land grants as such which I have.

I have had searches done for wills or obituaries without any success. Ordered land records as well. I can't get over to search myself as I live too far away to visit.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Tim Ryeland

I am working on several projects trying to establish clearer links between Scottish families who had settled on Sir John Johnson's land in the Mohawk River Valley of New York before the revolution, their forebears, and their descendants.

One project is reconstructing a possible passenger list for The Pearl, a ship chartered by the McDonnells which brought over 400 highlands to New York in the fall of 1773.

While I know the list will never be 100% accurate, what I have to date is posted at:
http://www.calcamerons.com/pages/unsolved/reconst.html

The second project is finding as much information as possible about a small group of families who emigrated with my ancestors, Angus and Donald Cameron.
What I have to date about this group, which also came in 1773 but did not sail on The Pearl, is posted at:
http://www.calcamerons.com/pages/unsolved/famswcam.html

I welcome any additional documentation or corrections.
Can someone explain the information I found in a microfilm of the land confiscated from Loyalists in New York? The name of the Loyalist is listed along with the location of the property and the occupation of the Loyalist. Then there is a column titled "Indictment" and a column titled "Judgement". Example:
McDonald, Alexander
Charlotte River, Tryon County
Farmer
Indictment 3-5-7
Judgement 29-12-83

I want to know where the confiscated land was located (more precisely than just the community) and who got the land from the Loyalist. Are these numbers supposed to be dates? If so, should I look at county land records for 29-12-83 to see if there is a record of who received this confiscated land?

Myers/Maher in Mascouche Qc Loyalist?

I have a german family that settled in St. Henri de Mascouche Quebec, I at first thought they might be Hessians, but experts in the area don't think so they feel they may be loyalist. Based on some records in Canada some say they were born in Germany. There are four siblings (possibly a 5th) that settled in this area they are as follows:

My Ancestor Jean(John) Maher/Myers he married before 1792 to Isabelle McDonnel et al; First child I have record of is Jean Maher baptized in Nov of 1792 at Ste. Anne Des Plaines Qc. In 1880 US census his son Felix list father as being born in Scotland and Mother in Germany (I think mixed up). Ultimately settled in the Mascouche.

One brother Abraham Maher/Myer he married on 13 Feb 1792 at Christ Church Montreal to Victoire Lagace (listed as Artoise Garcy in actual record). The first child I have record of is Jean Maher born 1 Feb 1793 at Ste Anne Des Plaines.

Another Brother is Jacob Maher/Myer, he first married Angelique Taillon date and place unknown. He married 2nd time 7 Feb 1803 at Christ Church Montreal to Marie Gauveaux.

The only sister I have is Sophie Myer/Maher who was married to Christophe Laporte (when he was baptized as an adult in 1833 it listed his place of birth as Germany). The first child I have for this couple was born in APr 1792 at Ste. Annes Des Plaines.

A possible 5th sibling is Andre Maher who eventually married (haven't found record) Francoise Gauthier (had at least 2 children out of wedlock with her also. This family was living in the same area, but haven't found definite proof he is related.

All the families utlimately settled in the parish of St. Henri in Mascouche. Descendants of the siblings ended up moving back to the US (as early as 1835) living in Burlington/Winooski VT.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Phil

Hi,

My ancestor was Richard Prentice, a U.E. Loyalist of Upper Canada. In Pringle's Appendix B, he was described thusly:
Richard Prentice: 1785 Called Loyalist by G. Hamilton, 100. A. Mc.L. a Blacksmith. Stamped Book.

Can somebody please tell me what A.Mc.L. might stand for? Also, I am unable to determine who G. Hamilton was. Thanks so much for any help.

Sincerely,
Jan

Daniel Campbell UEL

I'm looking for information on Daniel Campbell UEL who had a daughter named Eleanor (Eleanor was born c.1780). His daughter Eleanor married Hector Manson.
This is what I found on the internet:

"Hector Manson purchased W 1/2, Lot 25, 2nd Conc., 4th Range, Cornwall Twp. from Daniel Campbell - February 20, 1816. This farm was divided and willed to sons John, Daniel & William in 1849. William sold his 1/3 (this is the part where the quarry was and from which some of the stone for the original Cornwall Canal was taken) and Daniel willed his 1/3 to John in a will dated July 22, 1850 and registered September 10, 1858."

I'm trying to figure out who this Daniel Campbell was, who he married, where and when he was born and if his daughter had any siblings.

Thanks
rothycat@hotmail.com
Maggie Barron

John Grant UEL

I was recently shocked to find out that NO ONE ELSE has applied to U.E.L. Association as a descendant of John "Duldraeggan" Grant (who married Mary
McIntyre, Catherine Grant and possibly Caroline Grant) when there is so much written about this family!

I didn't apply, but a cousin recently did and her application was accepted! This basically "proves" that our shared ancestor, John Grant (c.1798-1869) is a son of John "Duldraeggan" Grant and Mary McIntyre!
This was a brickwall of mine for so long!

John Grant, son of John "Duldraeggan" Grant, as far as I can see only had one child (Sarah JANE/JEAN Grant, wife of James Alexander Dow), so that could explain why there aren't too many people researching him, but he had many siblings who married into well known and well researched families that I'm surprised that no one else has applied for this!

If I'm wrong though, feel free to contact me. This cousin was informed by the UEL Association that she has been the only one who has applied though....

rothycat@hotmail.com

Maggie Barron

Anyone have access to information which will show Jacob Waggoner, b. abt 1750, tenant of Sir John Johnson, Tryon Co., NY escaped to Quebec with Johnson and joined the King's Royal New York Regiment under Col. Johnson? All I have is a short paragraph with this information without source. I would like to confirm this info, plus dates of birth, marriage, death, etc. It's not likely that Jacob ever returned to the independent U.S.A. I have his children as Henry, George, Jacob, Solomon, Mary, Nancy, Katherine, and Margaret, with many unknown, estimated or unproven dates. Please e-mail directly, as I am using a shared library computer right now. cebtoo@yahoo.com

Jameson MOODY and wife Martha from Londonderry, NH to Truro, Nova Scotia??

I am searching for anything on a "Jameson" MOODY(Moodie-Mudie) and wife known only as "Martha" who were in Londonderry, Rockingham Co., NH (most likely Ulster-Scots) whose 3 children were born in Londonderry - son James Moody b. Aug. 1755 (whom I suspect to be my 5th grt. grandfather), Janet b. 1757 and Elinor (Eleanor) b. 1759.
This Moody (Moodie-Mudie) family then Disappears off the map after this last child was born. My thinking is that they fled to Nova Scotia like so many other families did prior to the outbreak of the Rev. War.
I do know that many of the Londonderry, NH families went to the Truro and Pictou, Nova Scotia area which was largely inhabited by the Ulster-Scots who came to America in the early to mid 1700's from Northern Ireland.
My own Moody family (ydna is showing 2 matches to other Moody's whose family claim Ulster Ireland links), which makes me think my branch may have gone to Nova Scotia prior to the Rev.
My own 5th grt. grandfather James Moody (if he is the one born to the above mentioned couple), appears out of nowhere in Buxton, York Co., Maine to marry in Jan. 1774 to my 5th grt. grandmother Elizabeth DONALD (seen spelled Donnell as well...but she had Scottish roots), and then they vanish.
I think they may have fled to Nova Scotia and perhaps to James family who may have been in the Truro area of NS.
I have NO Proof of that however, this is only speculation.
I have the Marriage record of my 5th grt. grandparents and know that they had at least 3 children - Sarah, James and Joseph MOODY (my 4th grt. grandfather), but Maine has nor records of their births.
Perhaps they were all born in Nova Scotia.

If anyone can help or has stumbled onto any of these names in Nova Scotia while searching for their Loyalist families I would be Most Greatful for any info or help.
Thank You

James Moody - Nova Scotia (Not the Lt. James from NJ)

Searching for my 5th grt. grandfather James Moody b.c1750 possibly as much as 20 years earlier than that but Not born after Aug. 1755. He married in Jan. 1774 Buxton, York Co., ME and appeared there out of nowhere and then disappeared as soon as he was married.
My guess is he went to Nova Scotia or New Brunswick, CAN.
I cannot find any records of him though and am wondering if anyone in their genealogical travels may have stumbled onto my James Moody. In Nova Scotia I have a ydna match to a Moody family whose earliest known ancestor is also a James Moody. Their James Moody (and quite possibly mine as well) was married to a Sarah BAKER in July 1784.
James may have been a Loyalist...this is why I am checking here. The only list of any Moody's I've seen is on the Old United Empire Loyalist list where a James "HANDSHAW" ~alias~ MOODY is listed.
Perhaps someone here can help.
Thank you very much.
Sutton from England to NC to MS, 1820

I am searching for the parents of my ancestor, Thomas Sutton, born circa 1790- 1800. It is said that he immigrated from England to North Carolina, where his parents had arrived earlier. He appears in Mississippi in 1820 (the War of 1812 had ended 6 years earlier). He is said to have had relatives in Sheffield, England. In the 1830 Mississippi census, he stated that he was “alien: foreign born not naturalized”. He purchased a sawmill and grist mill in Jefferson County, MS, in 1826. A sawmill would have been an excellent money-making opportunity in the growing new state. He married Phebe Humphries in 1820. Their children were: John, Stephen, Thomas, Margaret, and another daughter whose name is not known. He and Phebe paid for the education of all 5 children. One son, Stephen, joined the local Masonic lodge.
I'll be visiting the Johnstown, New York as well as the Lancaster, Ontario area in late September, 2006 to follow the path of my Loyalist ancestor Thomas Ross Taylor. He and other Ross relatives are listed on the Kingsborough Rent Roll. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wjmartin/kingsbor.h...
Does any know if the Kingsborough Rent Roll lot information is helpful in finding at least the general area in the Kingsborough NY Patent where he lived?

Loyalists from VT & MA to Canada 1830s??

I am trying to trace my husband's gggrandfather's roots by researching the the folks who seem to have migrated to Canada with him.

Reuel Anson PIERCE was b. abt. 1805-11 somewhere in VT. He arrived in Carleton County (near Ottawa), Ontario, Canada abt. 1831-33. Two other settler families, in the same area, seem to have arrived about the same time, also from VT. This makes me think they might have travelled north as a group. Also, the other folks all seem to be from MA originally - so it makes me wonder if the PIERCEs were too? Add to this the fact that Reuel's children were known to be Loyalist descendants (yes, but how?) & it gets very interesting.

The other settlers were Isaac Chauncey SMITH (b. 1800 VT) & his wife Sarah WAKEFIELD (b. 1805 MA) - his parents were Elihu SMITH & Mary TUCKER both of MA. Also Adeline RHODES (b. 1805 MA).

Can you add anything? Thank you!

Mary
in Canada

JOHN BROWN of MOUNT DESERT LOYALIST QUANDRY?

Am stuck doing my Brown Family Genealogy. My father told me (family hand-me-down legend/lore) that his decendant John Brown/e was a Loyalist and had to flee the Mount Desert Island area to Nova Scotia for several years. After the war, as he had land holdings including land on Somes Sound,MDI,he snuck back to MDI hiding undera load of codfish.
Census/Town records of MDI have no John Brown listed for 1790 or 1800. Two of John's son's John b.1784, and James b.1787 show-up on MDI around 1800. Old John is not listed until 1810.
However the 117 acre plot John Brown had on Somes Sound was retained in the Bernard Petition to the Mass Gen Court 1785..He was one of four families on Somes Sound apparently before the Revolution when the original Bernard Grants were given out. Somes Sound was Abraham Somes little feudal kingdom. I find that his uncle married John Brown's daughter hence family connection established. Abraham Somes son Daniel was also a Loyalist and disappeared prior to the Revolution never to return. He had previously lived on Somes Sound with his father Abraham Somes.
I'm stuck..from the time John Brown married Sussana Masury in Salem/Danvers 1728..I have a big black void until the brother's John and James show up around 1800. I have one old note that says John deeded his land to brother James in 1773 and fled to Nova Scotia. I know my family were early inhabitrants of MDI, but they are excluded from MDI history. Mount Norumbega in NE Harbor was named after John Brown hence Brown's Mountain..but the no-it-all local genealogist and blue-bloods give us/him no recognition.
If anyone can fill this black void for me and give me any info on where John Brown was during the revolution please let me know. thanks Austin

Joseph, also a son of Thomas Coates, remained untouched by Loyalist activities, remained in Salem co. NJ. A son in law of Thomas Coates, Richard Mead, married to daughter Parnell, went to Nova Scotia in 1783, after Thomas jr. died in camp as they had been in the same company. The wives of son Thomas and James Sutton, being Mary Abbot and Elizabeth Abbot, daughters of Abdon Abbot sr. and sisters of Abdon jr. who was to be hanged for being a Loyalist, later pardoned.Other Loyalist connected by marriage was Moses Atkinson, married to another daughter of Abdon Abbot. 4 sons of Thomas and Mary used the surname of Abbot and moved to Crawford co. If you are interested in participating, please visit our website:

http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_det.asp?group=Trott&amp...

Through the DNA program, we hope to identify TROTT families in the U.S. and eventually tie them into their English roots.

TROTTs were on the East Coast as early as the mid-1600s and, as frontiers opened, quickly spread across the U.S. I am attempting to contact as many TROTT descendants as possible and establish a North American database so we can track these various families. I look forward to hearing from you.

I was wondering if anyone has any information on a Daniel Campbell UEL (United Empire Loyalist) who probably settled in Canada (in the Stormont, Dundas or Glengarry co. areas)after the war. I don't have any information on him at all other than the fact that he had a daughter named Eleanor.
Eleanor Campbell was born about 1780 in New York state and died 1 February 1873 in Mille Roches, Stormont County, Ontario, Canada. She married Hector Manson, son of Thomas & Elizabeth (Walker) Manson on 17 March 1806 at St. Andrew's Church in Williamstown, Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada.
I was always wondering whether my Daniel Campbell is the one who was married to Engeltie "Elizabeth" Angelina Bradt and lived in Schenectady.....but that's so far only speculation as I'm not sure whether that Daniel Campbell was a Loyalist.
Any information or even 'geusses' would be very helpful!!

Thanks!

Maggie Barron
Robert Cook of Massachusetts

Hi~

There was a Robert Cook who was from Suffolk county, Massachusetts. I found some transcriptions of claims and such that he made on the www.royalprovincial.com website. He said that in June 1775, he had had to escape from the rebels and leave behind his wife and 13 children. I'm not sure if that was permanently or for the duration of the war. He said that his service to the British government had begun in 1745 as a private soldier. I'm trying to figure out if this Robert Cook is the same as the Robert Cook who was married to Mary Lapp and had two children--Robert (b. 1800) & Thomas (b. 1802). Thomas eventually settled in Bertie Twp. in Welland county, Ontario, Canada, and I was wondering if he might have gotten a land grant for his father's service. If anyone can help me out or point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it! I'm very new to Revolutionary War research and especailly to Loyalist research. Thanks, and take care!
John Morgrudge, George Johnstone, James Rankin

Through an incorrect article citation, I have acquired three Petitions submitted by Loyalists after the Revolutionary War, but which are of no use to me. I would be happy to supply the citations or copy the documents for anyone interested. 1. Morgrudge (complete) served in the Charleston SC customs office, was imprisoned for 18 months, and finally returned to England in 1788. 2. Johnstone (fragment) may have been in the Philadelphia area, and appears to be denying charges of misappropriation of funds. The surname Patterson is mentioned. 3. Rankin (complete) lived in York Town, PA, sat in the PA Provincial Assembly, and also appears to be defending himself from charges. There are no other names mentioned.

I am looking for info on Adam Dennis and his son John who immigrated from NJ to Ontario around 1787. Adam and his family are listed as a Loyalist on the Return of Families of Sept. 17, 1787 from the Niagara Historical Society. John married Jane Laraway.

I am particulary interested in finding out about Adam's parents in the States and his religion.

Thanks.

Anne Henderson

Hello Cousins,
I don't like to just pop in and out of these strings, and I haven't participated in a very long time. But the recent exchanges about Ontario Loyalists have really been interesting and I hope that I may join in.
I am Laurel Graham, grandaughter of Donald Church (1899-1972), son of Palen Church (1848-1927), son of Richard J. Church (1821-1907) of Picton Ontario. Richard was married twice: Ruth Collier and Minnie (Amelia) Welbanks. Richard is the son of Oliver Church who is reported to have come to Canada from England. Not true: Oliver (b.1781) was the son of Oliver (b.1756) who was born in Battleboro, Vermont, and is listed as having been under warrant of arrest for voluntarily leaving Vermont to support England, and who, should they return "shall be whipped on the naked Back, not more than forty, nor less than twenty Stripes; which Punishment shall be inflicted, and the Delinquent shall be ordered to quit this State immediately."
I have a copy of "An Act to Prevent the Return to This State of Certain Persons Therein Named, and Others Who Have Left This State, Or Either Of the United States, and Joined the Enemies Thereof, February 26, 1779 This document has the names of many people from Cumberland County Vermont who were Loyalists. Also, I have copies of the chapters on Church and Welbanks from "Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte...with introduction by William F.E. Morley...Originally published in 1904; reprint 1972." Other names in the family tree include Clute, Redner. I also have photos of the Church and Minnakers from the 1930s or so. I have hit a wall in a couple of places and would love to share what I do have. Is anyone interested?

SOPHIA ROMER 1779.
My Thomas Trott b/a 1746 d. 1816. I found King's Co. records for both Sophia & Thomas, but never mentioned together. If this is the same Thomas, then their children are: Susanna b/a 1783, Mary 1790 & John b.1787 NB. mar. Deborah Parker in 1813, d/o Titus & Mary. Their ch: Joseph Hewlett, Thomas, Mary Ann, SOPHIA ROMINE, William, John Craig, Clarissa Deborah, Elizabeth Jane, George Samuel & Rebecca.
Mary Ann mar. Nathaniel Belyea (Robert, Henry,Henry, Louis)
I know there were Trott Loyalists in Charlotte Co, but I have not found mention of Thomas, though he is of the same age.
Any help "finding Thomas Trott", my brickwall, greatfully accepted.
Lickley of Westchester NY

I have a confusing contradiction:

John Lickley (Scot, born abt 1734) was a tenant of Col. Beverly Robinson in Westchester/ Dutchess Co before the war. He was a prominent citizen, noted as the Poundmaster of Canopus Hollow in Phillipstown.

One source says he was tried as a Tory and imprisoned.

Another source has him on the receiving end of land ditsirbuted when Beverly Robinson's land was seized by the Commission of Forfeiture.

In any event, he died in Phillipstown in 1807.

So was he a Tory? Did he recant?

His family stayed in Phillipstown in succeeding generations. His daughter Phebe married by ancestor, Absalom Mead,

Does anybody know more about the Tories in thie regio0n and what happened to them?

Pat Mead Steele

Upper Canada Loyalist Land Grants

Loyalist Land Grants Upper Canada.
I am hoping someone can help me with the following question.
When a Loyalist made an application for a land grant was there a certain area assigned too each regiment or could he petition for any crown land? The reason for asking is I am researching an Edward and a Moses Foster both U. E. L. Edward received land in Matilda Twp., Dundas Co. and Moses land in Lennox & Addington Co. It would almost appear that Edward is the father of Moses however it seems odd that Moses would have petitioned for land so far away from is Father. Moses entered the war late (1781) but Edward came over with the Sir John Johnston group (Edward rented land from Sir John in N. Y.) Any help on how the land grants were parceled out would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Carman Foster, Ontario, Canada.
Note I have also posted this note on the Lennox & Addington Co. board.
The Meaning of "Under Convention"

Would anyone on this list know what the term 'under convention' meant? I have noticed on a couple of muster rolls that this term was placed next to several individual names on the lists and I imagine that this was because these particular soldiers were captured in the surrender at Saratoga and that they were released under the surrender terms agreed to by Generals Gates and Burgoyne. Is this correct?

Thanking you in advance,

Gary McCormick

HENDERSON Loyalists

Hello. This summer I have been working on the family tree of my newly found step-cousins.

Their grandparents were Charles A. BEDELL, b1891 MA, and Mrs. Hazel (SHAW) (McCAVOUR) BEDELL, b1895 NB.

Hazel's parents were reportedly Edward SHAW and Eliza(beth) HENDERSON, married ~1878 in NB.

Edward SHAW was born in England in 1855, and Eliza HENDERSON was born in NB in 1855, but listed herself as "Irish." (See 1881 Canadian Census)

I have just heard from a descendant of this couple this week, and he tells me that Eliza was probably the daughter of John HENDERSON and Mary BOYLE who married in NB in 1850.

He also thinks that John HENDERSON was a member of a "Loyalist family."

I checked the archives of the HENDERSON Message Boards and noticed that there were at least two HENDERSON's who were Loyalists, one went to Quebec Province and one went to Nova Scotia.

I was wondering how many HENDERSON's went to Nova Scotia (New Brunswick).

This morning on World Tree Connect I found someone who posted information about a Benjamin HENDERSON, reportedly born in 1786 in NB, who might have been a son of a Loyalist family. (This Benjamin married a Mary HITCHINGS in NB.)

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

FYI: Coincidentally, I have an Elizabeth HENDERSON on my own family-tree. She was born in Quebec in 1827, and in 1851 she married her cousin, Robert KERR. Their first child, William KERR, moved down to Boston, MA, ~1872, and would become my great-grandfather.

A KERR and HENDERSON family group left Sligo, Ireland, in 1823, to migrate to Argenteuil County, Quebec Province.

It is very difficult to find information on this family...he was a Lutheran Minister who lived in Richland County, SC and was reported as a Tory by a Mr. Strother to Col. John Taylor.
He and his children fled back to Charleston, SC to St. Philips Church in 1780 where he got smallpox and died in Nov 1781.
His children changed the name from Dubbert to DuBard / Dubard and I have found other variations of the name.
I recently made a trip to Charleston and went to St. Philips however they did not have his name on their register - although I have found it listed in the Minutes of St. Philips Register that one of the ministers had written back when.
Any information will be appreciated.

Weaver Teague

I am looking for information on Margaret Weaver, b. ca. 1746, m. Jacob Teague, ca. 1767. In 1775, Jacob Teague and his family had been living in New York Province at German Flats before going to Lake Otsego, Tryon County. Jacob was a Loyalist who came to Niagara to join Butler's Rangers where he served for two years and was later with Sir John Johnson's Rangers. It is believed Jacob's family were Dutch, but came to America from Fifeshire, Scotland.
If anyone can help, would be most grateful. Margaret Weaver is one of my brick walls!
