Re: Dec: Robert Thomajan

YOUR Message was posted with an ERROR - On June 23, 2004
Austin attorney, businessman, philanthropist dies at 63
Katie Ford
Austin Business Journal staff
Austinite Robert Thomajan, 63, died in a plane crash in the Florida panhandle on Monday. He was a founder of Austin-based wine store Grape Vine Market.

Thomajan and Jack Nyce of Horseshoe Bay-based Nyce Flight Services were the only two people on board the twin-engine Piper Aztec when it crashed about 40 miles northeast of Pensacola, Okaloosa County authorities say.

The men were flying from Marianna, Fla., to Lockhart when the plane disappeared from radar screens at nearby Eglin Air Force Base Monday afternoon. Private citizens discovered the plane's debris, according to Rick Hord, public information officer for the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

Hord says the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

Thomajan founded Grape Vine Market, located at 7938 Great Northern Blvd., with partners Chuck Huffaker and Steve Savina in May 1999.

Savina says Thomajan will be "sorely missed and remembered forever."

"Without the input of Robert Thomajan, Grape Vine Market would not be here," Savina says. "His sagacity allowed him not only to create innovative retail ideas but to solve and act on problems while most ordinary people would still be isolating the problem.

"He was a doer, not a thinker, only because he had thought about it, figured it out and was doing it before anyone else was done thinking about it. Make no mistake, though, he was not a micromanager. Although he demanded the best from all of us, he was more than willing to listen to any concerns no matter how minor."

Steve Hicks, chairman of Austin private investment firm Capstar Partners LLC, says his friendship with Thomajan reaches back about seven years.

"He certainly was one of the smartest businessmen I've ever known," Hicks says. "Anything he did, he attacked with his heart and soul."

Hicks says he and Thomajan were not only neighbors in Austin, but also on the island of St. Bart's, where they each had second homes.

"[Thomajan] was really loved down there," Hicks says. "In the last two years or so, he had learned how to speak French and he was doing some law work there. He had a real love for that island; it's something we both shared."

Thomajan, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., moved to Austin in 1986 to extend the presence of his New York-based law firm Milgrim Thomajan & Lee. Thomajan was an active supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Austin Lyric Opera, Ballet Austin, Meals on Wheels and St. David's Toast of the Town event.

Memorial services for Thomajan will be held Sunday at Cook Walden at 6100 N. Lamar at 10:30 a.m.
Charles Valentin AlKan

Charles-Valentin Alkan (November 30, 1813–March 29, 1888) was a French composer and one of the greatest virtuoso pianists of his day. His compositions for solo piano include some of the most fiendishly difficult ever written, and performers who can master them are few and far between. His attachment to his Jewish origins is displayed both in his life and his work.
Biography

Life and career

Alkan was born Charles-Valentin Morhange to a Jewish family in Paris, where his father lived as a music teacher. Charles-Valentin and his brothers, who were also musicians, used their father's first name, Alkan, as their last. Charles-Valentin Alkan spent his life in and around Paris. His only known excursions were a concert tour in England in 1833-1834, and a brief visit to Metz on family matters in the 1840s.

Alkan was a child prodigy. He entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of six, where he studied both piano and organ. His teachers included Joseph Zimmermann, who also taught Georges Bizet, César Franck, Charles Gounod, and Ambroise Thomas. At the age of seven, he won a first prize for solfège, and at the age of nine, Luigi Cherubini described his technique and ability as extraordinary. His opus 1 dates from 1828, when he was 14 years old.

In his twenties, he played concerts in elegant social circles and taught piano. His friends included Franz Liszt, Frédéric Chopin, George Sand, and Victor Hugo. By the age of twenty-four, he had built a reputation as one of the great virtuoso pianists of his day, rivalling other touring virtuoso composer-pianists of the day such as Liszt, Sigismond Thalberg, and Friedrich Kalkbrenner. Liszt once stated that Alkan had the most perfect technique he had ever seen. At this time, because of various personal problems and reverses, he withdrew into private study and composition for the remainder of his life, with only occasional forays back into the limelight. In spite of his early fame and technical accomplishment, he spent much of his life after 1850 in obscurity, performing in public only occasionally. In his last decade he emerged to give a series of 'Petits Concerts' at the Erard piano showrooms, which featured music not only by himself but of his favourite composers from Bach onwards. He was occasionally assisted in these concerts by his siblings. Those attending included Vincent d'Indy.

There are periods of Alkan's life about which little is known, other than that he was immersed in the study of the Bible and the Talmud. It appears from his correspondence with Ferdinand Hiller that Alkan completed a full translation into French of both the Old Testament and the New Testament, from their original languages. This has been completely lost, as have many of Alkan's compositions. Amongst the missing works are some string sextets and a full-scale orchestral symphony, quite different from the Symphony for piano solo in opus 39, which was described in an article in 1846 by Léon Kreutzer, to whom Alkan had shown the score.

The pianist Elie-Miriam Delaborde (1839–1913) is generally believed to be Alkan's illegitimate son. He was taught by Alkan in his youth and performed and edited many of Alkan's works; like his father he was a notable pédalier player.

Tomb of Charles-Valentin Alkan, Cimetière de Montmartre, Paris.

Alkan died in Paris at the age of 74. For many years it was believed that his death was caused by a bookcase falling on him in his home, brought down as he reached for a volume of the Talmud which he had placed on the highest shelf (in the position closest to Heaven). This apocryphal tale, which appears to have been circulated by Delaborde, has been effectively disproved by Hugh MacDonald in an article in the Musical Times (vol. 129, 1978 - More on Alkan's Death), in which he reports a contemporary letter from one of Alkan's pupils explaining that Alkan had died followng being trapped beneath a falling port-parapluie (a heavy coat/umbrella rack). The story of the bookcase may have its roots in a legend told of the Rabbi Aryeh Leib ben Asher, known as 'Shaagat Aryeh', rabbi of Metz, the town from which Alkan's family originated. (See also talk page for discussion of Alkan's death). Alkan is buried in the Cimetière de Montmartre, Paris.

A myth also circulates about an alleged obituary of Alkan, cited as fact in Ronald Smith's biography of the composer and since widely quoted, credited to the magazine 'Le Ménéstrel', beginning with the words "Alkan is dead. He had to die in order to prove his existence." No such obituary appeared in 'Le Ménéstrel' and none has been located to date in any other contemporary journal.

Music

Like Chopin, Alkan wrote almost exclusively for the keyboard, although in Alkan's case this included the organ and the pédalier (a piano with a pedal board), of which he was a noted exponent. Some of his music requires a dazzling virtuosity, examples of his compositions calling for velocity, enormous leaps at speed, long stretches of fast repeated notes, and the maintenance of widely-spaced contrapuntal lines. Notable compositions include the Grande Sonate Les Quatre Ages (opus 33), depicting the Four Ages of Man, and the two sets of etudes in all the major and minor keys (opus 35 in the major and opus 39 in the minor). These surpass even the Transcendental Etudes of Liszt in scale and difficulty. The opus 39 collection contains the Symphony for Solo Piano (numbers four, five, six and seven), and the Concerto for Solo Piano (numbers eight, nine and ten). The concerto alone takes nearly an hour to play, and presents a great challenge to the performer. Number twelve of Op. 39 is a set of variations Le festin d'Esope ("Aesop's Feast"). He also composed other programmatic pieces, such as Le chemin de fer (1844) which may be the earliest composition giving a musical picture of a railroad. His chamber music compositions include a violin sonata, a cello sonata, and a piano trio. One of his most bizarre pieces is the Marche funebre sulla morte d'un papagallo (Funeral march for a parrot), for three oboes, bassoon and voices.

Musically, many of his ideas were unconventional, even innovative. Some of his multi-movement compositions show "progressive tonality" which would have been familiar to the later Danish composer, Carl Nielsen (for example, Alkan's first chamber concerto begins in A minor and ends in E major). He was rigorous in avoiding enharmonic spelling, occasionally modulating to keys containing double-sharps or double-flats, so pianists are occasionally required to come to terms with distant keys such as E# major and the occasional triple-sharp.

Alkan seems to have had few followers, although his admirers included Ferruccio Busoni and Anton Rubinstein. The latter dedicated a concerto to him. Debussy and Ravel both studied his music under teachers who knew Alkan personally and noted their debt to his examples. The composer Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji promoted Alkan's music in his reviews and criticism, and composed a work with a movement entitled Quasi Alkan. Alkan's organ compositions were known to César Franck, Camille Saint-Saëns and others and their influence can be traced in the French organ school up to the present day.

For many years after his death, Alkan's work was almost completely forgotten. There has been a steady revival of interest in his compositions over the course of the twentieth century. Works by Alkan have been recorded by Egon Petri, John Ogdon, Raymond Lewenthal, Ronald Smith, Jack Gibbons, Mark Latimer, Stephanie McCallum and Marc-André Hamelin among others.

Notable compositions

* Op. 10 Two Concertos da camera

No. 1 Concerto da Camera in A minor
No. 2 Concerto da Camera in C-sharp minor

* Op. 12, Trois Improvisations dans le style brilliant
* Op. 13, Trois Andantes romantiques
* Op. 15, Trois Morceaux dans le genre pathétique
* Op. 16, Tre Scherzi
* Op. 21, Grand duo concertant in F-sharp minor for violin and pianoforte (1840)
* Op. 22, Nocturne
* Op. 25, Alleluia
* Op. 26, Marche funèbre
* Op. 30, Trio in G minor for violin, cello and pianoforte (1841)
* Op. 31, Préludes
* Op. 33, Grande Sonate Les Quatre Ages
* Op. 35, Douze Études dans tous les tons majeurs
* Op. 39, Douze Études dans tous les tons mineurs

No. 1 Comme le vent ("Like the wind")
No. 2 En rhythme molossique ("In Molossian rhythm")
No. 3 Scherzo diabolico ("Diabolic scherzo")
Nos. 4-7 Symphony for solo piano
Nos. 8-10 Concerto for solo piano
No. 11 Ouverture ("Overture")
No. 12 Le festin d'Esope (Aesop's feast)

* Op. 41, Trois petites fantaisies
* Op. 45, Salut, cendre de pauvre!
* Op. 47, Sonate de concert in E major for cello and pianoforte (1857)
* Op. 52, Super flumina Babylonis (Paraphrase of Psalm CXXXVII)
* Op. 61, Sonatine
* Op. 63, Forty-eight Esquisses
* Op. 69, Impromptu sur le Choral de Luther
* Op. 76, Trois Grandes Études for piano

No. 1 Fantaisie in A-flat major for the left hand
No. 2 Introduction, Variations and Finale in D major for the right hand
No. 3 Mouvement semblable et perpetuel (Rondo-Toccata) in C minor for hands reunited

Tielman Susato

 TIELMAN SUSATO

*MCHARDY: William Duff McHardy

Professor W D McHardy
Last Updated: 10:28pm BST 23/08/2001
The telegraph.co.uk

Scholar of Hebrew at Oxford who for a quarter of a century helped translate The New English Bible

PROFESSOR W D McHARDY, who has died aged 88, was Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford from 1960 until 1978, and one of the editors of The New English Bible.

Early in his career, in the mid-1940s, McHardy was recruited onto the panel of Old Testament experts working on what was then called "The New Translation of the Bible," sponsored by the University Presses of Oxford and Cambridge. He was much the panel's youngest member. "You'll have to answer for this, McHardy," the others would warn him when they had made a daring decision over the meaning of a word, "because we'll all be dead by the time this is published."

In 1961, he became the convenor of the Apocrypha panel, and when the completed translation was finally published in 1970 as The New English Bible, McHardy was delighted at the acclaim given to his edition of the Apocrypha.

But despite the general success of The New English Bible, it was felt that its language was already dated by the time of publication because of its quarter-century long gestation. In 1973, therefore, McHardy was invited to become director of a thoroughgoing revision of the translation, which in time produced the Revised English Bible (1990).

William Duff McHardy was born in the rural north-east of Scotland, at Cullen, Banffshire, on May 26 1911. He contracted polio in infancy which left him permanently disabled, but his family believed strongly in education, and by winning scholarships he supported his own way through four separate degrees at three universities.

After Fordyce Academy and Aberdeen University, McHardy intended to enter the Church of Scotland, but while studying for this discovered a talent for Hebrew grammar. He went therefore to Edinburgh University to read Semitic Languages, and then on to St John's College, Oxford, where his doctorate was on the Syriac version of Ecclesiasticus.

In 1945, he became a lecturer in Aramaic and Syriac at Oxford and then, still in his mid-thirties, was appointed Samuel Davidson Professor of Old Testament Studies at London University, staying for 12 years.

He then accepted the Regius Chair in Hebrew at Oxford, although this necessitated a change in the University statutes to open the appointment to those outside the Anglican ministry. There was a certain amount of ill-feeling about this in more reactionary quarters of the University, but McHardy soon proved a success.

McHardy became an assistant Church of Scotland minister in Cullen parish, and always felt strongly that he should put his scholarship at the service of the Church at large. In 1969, he spent his only term of sabbatical leave lecturing at the University of Ghana, and then drove around East Africa holding bible translation workshops.

He also chaired the British and Foreign Bible Society's project "The Translator's New Testament", which aimed to make biblical scholarship available in their own tongue to translators of the New Testament. He was appointed CBE in 1990.

McHardy retired to Cullen, where despite failing sight he retained a love of the use of language and the infectious joyfulness which characterised his life. He married, in 1941, Vera Kemp. She died in 1984. They had a daughter.
