Attorneys - could they go unregistered?

One of my ancestors, Samuel Sewell, who lived round the Clerkenwell area of London was described by his two (though he may have had more) children as an attorney. The children married in 1827 and 1844. I've searched records of attorneys and lawyers for the period around 1807 when his son, Samuel John was born (in Bristol, though he ended up in Clerkenwell), but I can't find a Samuel Sewell. Was it possible to be an attorney without being registered - (in which case presumably practising illegally) - and to remain undetected? Or am I just looking in the wrong place for information. Any help would be appreciated

Gary
