Hello

Thank you for volunteering to do a lookup of the O'Connors on Bermuda... As we are expecting a snow storm tomorrow, I'd like to be an Bermuda O'Connor.

I have no Conner-O'Connor link to Bermuda at present, but who knows. Unfortunately, O'Connor is really a common Irish name. My oldest relative is a Joseph Conner born @ 1770 in Anguilla. The family story is the they were originally O'Connor... and the dutch on st. Maarten didn't like the O Apostrophe. I do not know how they knew that.

Thank you. John

Since you mentioned O'connor's

I live in Bermuda and the O'connor's are here in strong numbers. In fact, in the same part of the island ( St. David's ) where they started out.

IF you like I can see if anyone has done their tree out side of Bermuda.

tracy

My email is revsx2#hotmail.com.
We have had direct correspondence before.

I was looking in NS Sea Captains as there is an oral story about two "O'Connor" brothers who sailed from NS and stayed as the start of the Conner line. Incidently, on my grandmother's side, Vlaun's, gthey have a similar story about sea captains.

I am looking for any information on Harold Dawson (engineer) lost at sea when the ship Dorion sank in the 30's. He would be my grand father. He lived at 97 Morris Street, in Halifax and was married to Vivian Johnston (my grandmother). When the ship sank my father Harold Dawson Jr. was around 18 months old so he never really got to know his father. My father Harold Jr. passed away in 1999 he was 66. We never really discussed the possibility of his father having brothers or sisters he may have had. I'm searching for any extended family members or decendants with the name Dawson.
I'm hoping someone out there might have some information.

Because I haven't yet found the connection and I am curious to know how we are connected to each other. Are you related to Fons O'Connor? He used to be judge in SXM along with my grandfather Reginald Carty. His son Fonsje O'Connor lives on SXM. I am related through my father's side of the family (Richardson's) to the Connor's.

You can contact me via email at: mrmawilliams@hotmail.com

Looking forward to your reply.

Mark

Hello~ There are LOTS of vessels with the name "Ruby", but one with similar dates was found on the CD "Ships and Seafarers of Atlantic Canada". That vessel's info. is as follows: "Ruby", registration no. S861086, official no. 042404, constructed in Wallace, Cumberland Co., NS in 1861. It had 1 deck, 2 masts, was a "Brigantine", 97 ft. long, 23 ft. wide, gross & net tonnage of 136, registered in 1861, official closure year 1862 "Lost at Sea". The owner was Abraham BARTLETT, a farmer/planter residing in Brigus, Conception Bay, Newfoundland. The owner was the builder, with all 64 shares.

I found no listing for Charles LAUCKNER. Sorry.

I made the assumption that you had the correct dates. Hope this is beneficial. K.

This is probably a long shot: We have a family story about being Irish though our O'Connors go back to the 1770's in St. Maarten and Anguilla.
The story goes that the "originals" [My great grandfather changed the name "back" to O'Connor from Conner.] were two brothers who were ship's captains who had sailed from Nova Scotia and stayed in the area, maybe St. Kitt's first.
Any help, direction, guesses would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

My Grandfather Capt. William (Bill) Forbrigger owned two coastal schooners which sailed out of the Port Malcolm, Port Richmond area of Cape Breton. The first vessel he owned the Speed sank in Burchell's Cove, in the Bras d'Or Lakes in Cape Breton. He then purchased the Stella in Arichat around 1926 and sold her about 1930. I would love to know what became of this vessel.

Also if anyone is interested my grandfather did an interview in the Cape Breton Magazine back in the 1980's which gives a lot of information on what life was like on the coastal schooners at that time. I have transcribed the article to a word document and would be willing to share. It is also available at www.capebretonbooks.com issue no.38 for only $8.00.

Thanks Terri Forbrigger

Hi Valerie,
I think it was just speculation that the name was macBain. All the research my Dad did showed it was just Bain. I was lucky enough to meet a woman this summer who was a Bain from Aberdeen. She had done lots of research and told me that the Bain's came originally from France. They were the French Protestants and many immigrated to Scotland in the highlands near Aberdeen. Bain means "fair one". She had lots of information and I'm waiting for her to email me. I gave her the info I have about the dates and names. I'll let you know if I find out anything...Anita

I am a direct decendant of Alexander the 1st and according to my Dad's research the name was Bain not MacBain. I do know that the Bain's originally came from France and settled mostly in the highlands near Aberdeen. I met a Bain from Aberdeen this summer and she had done lots of research. You probably have the same info as me that Alexander and his Mother and Father and sister sailed from an unknown port in Scotland in 1768 or 69. Have fun in your search...Anita

Hi Anita: During the past six of seven years I have come across a lot of people researching Alexander, but no one has been lucky yet, and we may never know, unless some of Alexander's relatives in Scotland have that info.

Just heard from a Sharon (Murray) Bain, whose husband Bruce was born in Yarmouth. They are planning on a trip to Scotland next year. (You will see her note on the internet). Maybe they will be lucky. Have you heard that Alexander's surname may have been McBain in the beginning? Sharon is planing on visiting Edingburgh. I wonder how close Bainforth is to that area. I must check my maps.

I don't see her but about once each year.Yes I have a picture of the house in Digby. Digby is a very small town and the people are very kind and caring. My Grandfather Edwin Heber Smalley was of that very sort. The lady living in the house rembered Ross (the youngest Smalle) well. She said he grew lovely tomatoes. :) The second book is "The Narrative of Col. David Fanning".It was published by Briarpatch Press of Davidson, NC. He was a Loyalist. If there is anything I can help you with I will. I do not have my printer hooked to my computor so I have to send pictures by snail mail.
Virginia

Virginia,

Thanks for the information. Between computer issues and life, I had gotten away from my searches. I hope to start up again this winter. Are you related to Jenny Garner ? I was in touch with her but my computer crashed with all of my contact info several years ago. I think I've found someone who will be able to help me get it all back. I'm envious that you've made the trip to Digby. I had hope do go there before this but haven't made it yet. Do you have an address for the home ? Any pictures of it you can share ?
I have "Colonel David Fanning, The Adventures of a Carolina Loyalist" by John Hairr.

Bev

Interesting to read old entries. My grandfather was Edward Heber Smalley (Smalle). He was a brother to Bland Smalle.
He came to USA sometime after his 21st birthday. He married in Arkansas, taught school in the Creek Nation, Indian Territory then farmed in Pittsburg, OK, USA sometime after 1900. My remembered riding a ferry across a river when she was 3 years old. She pass away in March of 2007..Edward never became a citizen of USA. His father Capt. daniel Smalle and his brother Ross Smalle are buried in Digby, NS.
Been to Digy and met the lady who now owns Capt. Daniel Smalle's old home. Really no help but thought you might like the history. Have you read eith of the two books written about Col. Fanning?
Virginia

It looks to be only 2 holds, and of Great Lakes design.

Does anyone know anything about this vessel or can you tell me where to took for information on it.

Thanks for the help
Doreen

Hi Doreen:

Sorry to be so long in responding...have been offline for awhile. I have obtained a lot of my info from George Rose. DNA confirms that we are cousins. My ancestor was, of coures John Rose whose was the husband of Isobella Calder.

James Alexander and Alexander James were very well used names all down through my line. There was Alexander [Sandy] who was m. to Janet McKay, Then his son, was also Alexander James. He did something naughty, not sure what and had to skip off to Boston via "a sailing ship". That info from my Uncle, Douglas Rose, who is now about 94. Alexander James had several girls and James A. and married Elizabeth Stephens. They were my Great grandparents. They had Arthur A., my grandfather, Cameron and a girl who died young. I did hire the NEHGS and got further data from them re Alexander's [Sandy] Will, etc. I'm delighted to hear from you and perfectly willing to share any info that I have with you, cousin. Tell me more about yourself. I live in FL, USA, am a recent widow with 4 great children and one stunning little grandson. No other seafarers in my direct family

Sincerely,

Jean

Hello Jean,
I haven't checked the Seafarers of Nova Scotia for a long long time so I am late in getting back to you. I would be interested in any information you might have on the Rose family. I have checked out George Roses site and much of his information on Roderick came from my mother. Roderick was my Great great grandfather.

The information that I have came form my mother who has been doing genealogy for many years. She doesn't have James listed as having two names.

How do you fit into the family? I would be very interested in sharing information with you.

The list of ships that I have is the same as what George has. Do you have any different info. I would also me interested in having the names of any ships that any of the other Roses had any connection with. I know there were some that James and Roderick worked on together.

Doreen

my Dad did extensive research on Alexander the first but could never find the name of the ship or exactly were it sailed from although he thought it was most likely Glasgow. He tried to get ship's records around that time but with no luck. He thought they probably originated from the Scottish highlands...perhaps from a town called Bainforth. I wonder if there would be any old church records. Alexander Bain was probably a common name. Anita

Many local folks from this area sailed on her but unfortunately most are deceased or their memories have faded. I know that my great great grandmother was Susan Comeau (could be a variation of the name) who was born in approximately 1852 and died in about 1927. Her husband was James W. Doane (the Captain mentioned in the story) and they had 5 kids (Leamon, Frances, Twila, Edith and my great grandfather Arthur). I have no clue who her parents were. Do you think it possible that they were Ambrose and Annie?

I believe the Dennis Comeau mentioned in your story about the sinking of the Daniel Simmons was the son of my gggrandparents Ambrose and Annie Melanson Comeau. I see that you are also interested in the Comeau family. Do you have any other information about this family? Barbara Tarr

Schooner Daniel Simmons

I am posting two more articles on the sinking of the Daniel Simmons below, if anyone is interested. My great great grandfather was James W. Doane. He and his crew were lost at sea due to the incident in 1898 and if anyone has ANY more info on him it would be GREATLY appreciated!

All hopes for the safety of the schooner Daniel Simmons owned by I.G. Hutchinson, Brighton, Digby have been given up. The crew of the Simmons, who unless picked up and carried to some distant port must certainly have been lost, were: Capt. James W. Done, Wayland Height, mate and James and Timothy Comeau, hands. They were all Digby men. Digby's contribution to the number of those lost by the gale of November was a heavy one, as many a saddened home throughout the country bears testimony.

Religious Intelligencer--- 28 Dec. 1898

We regret to say that the Schr. Daniel Simmonds , of Brighton, Capt. Doane did not arrive after the storm This vessel sailed from Glouster, for Brighton in company with the Schr. Princess, on Friday morning before the storm, and no tidings have been received from her since, except that Capt. Ryan, master of the Princess, says he sighted her astern Friday noon about fifty miles from Glouster. They were then endeavoring to reel the sails and he fears, with others, that they met a watery grave. The Daniel Simmonds, 70 tons register, was built in the US and was purchased some years ago by Isaac Hutchinson of Brighton, from which port she has been unning ever since. Her crew consisted of J. W. Doane, master of Brighton, who leaves a wife and large family; Chas. W. Haight, also of Brighton, who leaves a wife and four young children; Dennis Comeau, of Plympton, seaman, who leaves a wife and one child, and Timothy Comeau, of Gilbert's Cove, cook and seaman and unmarried. This is the second vessel Mr. Hutchinson has lost in the same trade, the other being the Ocean Belle, Capt. Dwight Ruggles which went ashore on the American coast, some years ago, the crew however in that case saved.
Digby Courier--- 9 Dec. 1898

All hopes for the safety of the schooner Daniel Simmons owned by I.G.
Hi Doreen:

Roderick was the brother of my Alexander James Rose. I do have a long list of his Boat names. If you still want it, reply to me: JeanRoseM@AOL.com and I'll rustle it up for you. If you want more info, there is a member of the family who has a website in NS, George Rose and he has done a splendid job of researching the family. I have the info on Rodderick from him and will be glad to share.

Jean
