Use of the word "connection" by religious groups 1800-1850

The may be a rather esoteric question for this group, but... I have a letter written from my great-great grandparents in Missouri to relatives in Bloomington, Indiana in 1840. In the letter there are several references to the "connection" in Indiana where other relatives and friends lived. The word is used as if they are referring to a larger family group, perhaps religious.
Does anyone have any knowledge as to which religious groups might have used this terminology? Quakers, some sects, etc.
I'd appreciate any help you could give.

Thanks
