My father, too, was raised on Potrero Hill after arriving here in 1907. His mother & father eventually divorced but his mother had a "general store." One of the family stories is that the women in the community came into the store and knocked everything off the shelves because my grandmother, Famnovria Bogdonoff Susoeff, had done something a woman shouldn't do - open and run a store to survive with 7 of her 12 children to care for. I gather the grandfather was supposed to support the children but he left for Mexico. An Irish friend's grandmother knew my grandmother. We met while teaching. Her family still lives on Potrero Hill. We even found the little house my grandmother and children lived in.
