Hi Nancy,
This post about rag shops just solved a mystery regarding the death of my great, great grandmother, Pauline Sarokin (nee Prohoroff). My grandmother once told me that her grandmother, Pauline, was killed in San Francisco when a bale of hay struck her in the head. I obtained Pauline's death certificate, and it states that her cause of death was from a falling bale of rags. Pauline must have worked in one of these rag shops.
