From The Reporter (Vacaville, CA), Friday, November 13, 1931, front page:
Armijo Student is Drowned While Fishing
Jack Cherimisin, 17, a pupil at the Armijo high school, Fairfield, was drowned in the Grizzly Island slough late Sunday afternoon while fishing for bass.
The boy lost his fishing pole overboard while casting, and decided to swim after the pole. The cold water caused him to have a cramp, and he drowned before other fishermen could reach him.
After an all-day search with grapping hooks the body was recovered Monday afternoon by the youth’s father, Paul Cherimisin of Tolenas. In the searching party headed by Deputy Sheriff Ernest Lockie, were many students from the high school.
Jack, in company with Tommie Simmers and two other boys had gone up Suisun slough near the Grizzly Island Ferry for an afternoon of striped bass fishing. According to the story told by young Simmers, Jack lost his line in mid-stream after making a cast. He pulled off his clothes and plunged into the water which was then at high tide. While swimming to the center of the slough he was apparently taken with cramps as he uttered a cry for help and sank. Simmers, who is much smaller, jumped into the stream with his clothes on in an attempt to rescue the drowning lad. Within a few feet of him Jack sent down for the last time.
