Third Botulism Victim Succumbs in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD (Kern Co.), Feb. 13. - Nick Conovaloff, 28, of Phoenix, Ariz., died in a local hospital at 4 p.m. yesterday, the third victim of botulism poisoning with which five persons were taken ill following a dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alexis Emerald, 111 West Lerde Road, Shafter, on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Emerald died earlier in the week.
Mary Kalpakoff, 60, and Alice Conovaloff, 44, the latter a sister of the Phoenix man, are under treatment in the Kern General Hospital.
Officials said laboratory reports indicate home canned cucumber pickles were a source of the botulism poisoning, but additional tests are being made of home canned tomato sauce and canne3d peaches.
