Motorist Faces Homicide Charge
Pete Chernoff, 24, of Route 32, Box 25, Kerman, today is in the Fresno County Jail facing a negligent homicide charge, resulting from the death of Philip A. Chickenoff, 23, 1702 DeHaro Street, San Francisco, in an automobile accident on Madera Avenue near Kearney Drive April 11th.
Chernoff was the driver of the automobile in which Chickenoff was a passenger.
Chernoff was arrested on a complaint filed in Justice Earle J. Church's court after a coroner’s jury last night placed the responsibility for Chickenoff's death upon Chernoff and said his use of intoxicating liquor was the cause of the accident
Investigating officers said Chernoff was driving at a high rate of speed when his automobile crashed into one driven by James Samarin, Route 2, Box 293, Kerman, and careened off striking a power pole.
Chernoff was arraigned in Justice Church's court and his preliminary hearing was set for April 22nd at 2 p.m. His bond was fixed at $5,000.
