SIX MOLOKANS ARE HELD ON NEW CHARGE

UNITED STATES ATTORNEY SWEARS OUT WARRANTS CHARGING SLAVS WITH FAILURE TO SIGN THEIR QUESTIONNAIRES

The sheriff’s office here yesterday received word from Phoenix that complaints against six of the Molokans who recently ended an eight months’ sentence in jail here had been sworn to before the United States commissioner at Phoenix by the department of justice through J. H. Langston, assistant United States attorney, charging they had committed an act against the peace and dignity of the United States of America.

Theses are leaders of the Molokans who were sentenced last spring to a year in the Prescott jail for refusing to register for military service. There were 34 of them altogether. Last spring all but these six signed and filled in their questionnaires when asked. These six refused.

These six, according to a statement from the department of justice, scorned to sign the questionnaires, laughed at their fellows who did sign them and said they would get out of jail as soon as those who did sign them. It is also disclosed at the time of the incident, that these six charged the 28 other Molokans with disloyalty to God for signing the questionnaires, and thereby having something to do with war.

The 28 Molokans who signed their questionnaires were released from the Prescott jail a few days ago and are now at the colony near Glendale. The six others were held, awaiting disposition by the department of justice. The penalty Mr. Langston said is one year imprisonment for conviction on the charge made against the Molokans.

Mr. Langston said that, concerning that clause in the military law, exempting from service, those whose religion forbade them to fight, there seemed to be a difference of interpretation. If the military is powerless in such matters, it would appear the department of justice is not.

The complaints against the six is similar in language, one paragraph reads:
“Unlawfully did willfully fail, neglect and refuse to fill out and answer the questions contained in said questionnaires and posting notice thereof as aforesaid contrary to the form of the states in such cases made and provided, and against the peace and dignity of the United States.”

Those against whom complaints were issued are: John Kulikoff, Ivan Susoeff, A. Ph. Shubin, F. F. Uren, J. D. Conovaloff and M. E. Shubin……
