I have information about Jake Klubnikin. He was born December 15, 1912 and died December 14, 1985 - a day before his birthday. He went by, Jack. He married Mary Dobrenen (I don't know the year but it was in March). She was born November 26, 1911, died March 23,1990. Their wedding anniversary. She went by the nickname, Min. They lost three babies. Jack & Min were my spiritual parents. Jack gave me away at my wedding which just happened to BE his 67th birthday. They considered me a part of their family and I was honored to call them mine. I had known them since I was born (May 1958) and we were close.

Min's parents were Alexander & Anastasia Dobrenen. I was told they had 11 children: 3 girls died in Russia, Fania and James were born in Russia (James died at 2 yrs old in CA); John, born and died in San Francisco, age not known to me; Anna born in San Francisco, CA (married a Russell Samson); Mary(or Min)born in San Francisco, CA; Al; Tonya (died at age 13); and Agnes. Agnes married William Poppoff. Agnes was also my spiritual mother and two of her daughters were in my wedding (Nadia & Lil' Agnes). She passed away Jan 15, 1980 - a month after my wedding.

Jake & Mary Klubnikin; William & Agnes Poppoff; and Anna Samson are buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, CA (Gate 1).
Hi Mary.......I received the alert from Ancestry about the website. I'm in transit now.......moving back to California from Florida. A Popoff cousin of ours contacted me.......Robert Preston. He is from the Egor Savelich Popoff line. Bob and I are 3rd cousins. I'll send him the link too and to other Popoff cousins. I'll be in touch as soon as I settle in.

The format is excellent. Did you create the site yourself?

Cheers!

Cuz Nancy

obit - TOLMACHOFF Dan Alex (1940-2009) Arizona

Dan Alex Tolmachoff, 69, of Glendale, passed away due to cancer on October 25, 2009 with his family by his side. An Arizona native, Dan was born on May 16, 1940 in Glendale. Dan was an Arizona public servant for 45 years, 20 years at the Department of Public Safety, and 25 years at the Arizona Registrar of Contractors.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Arizona Highway Patrol Association and the Brophy College Preparatory Dad’s Club. He was a very caring and considerate man and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Sharon (nee Johnson), daughter Heather Tolmachoff and son Gregory Tolmachoff.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8pm on Thursday, October 29th at Menke Funeral Home, 12420 N. 103rd Ave., Sun City, Arizona. Graveside service will be held 11 am on Friday, October 30th at Resthaven Park Cemetery, 6290 W. Northern Ave., Glendale, Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014 or the Arizona Kidney Foundation, 4203 E. Indian School Rd, Ste #140, Phoenix, AZ 85018.

Though he married out and was shunned by many of his S&L-user relatives, Dan requested a "Russian funeral with shovels", which was arranged and performed by relatives and members of the Shubin-Podval-605-Clark Ave congregation, City of Industry, CA with the Arizona congregation.

About 30 S&L-users performed the rites documented by Dan's great-grandfather Sergei which resulted in the Book of the Sun: Spirit and Life. He was buried in one of more than a dozen plots reserved for his relatives who would not be accepted in the Russian cemetery.

About 250 people attended. At least a dozen were in police uniform. About 30 wore Russian clothes. Another 20 of Russian descent attended in plain clothes.

Most of the shoveling was done by Tolmachoff relatives. Only 3 of the "Cowboys" who claim ownership of the assembly hall attended, but did not participate in any part of the service, except Pete (Zeke) Popoff who grabbed a shovel.
Hi,

I believe the Stephanie Kosareff you have on your site was an old friend of mine. I was trying to get back in touch with her. The last time I saw her was a couple years ago at Cal State Fullerton. If you can ask her to get a hold of me that would be great. Can you tell her to look me up on www.facebook.com? My name is Holly Jones and I me her while working at Old Navy.

I'd appreciate anything you can do!
Thank you!
H. Jones

Looking for Russians Who Survived the 1906 SF Earthquake

The Virtual Museum of the City of San Francisco is collecting names of survivors from the SF 1906 earthquake. There man not have been many Russians living in SF at that time; however, if you have a relative who felt the effects of the earthquake, please visit the website and submit the names of your family members.

http://www.sfmuseum.org/1906/06.html

This is an exerpt from the website.
"For many years I did extensive research on the 1906 Earthquake Dead using the dates of death between April 18, 1906 - May 19, 1906. I have since learned from Dr. Donald Cheu of the Governor's Earthquake Task Force that an earthquake death is defined as "… an immediate fatality resulting from an earthquake or an earthquake-caused injury or illness that becomes fatal within a period of ONE YEAR following the earthquake." I realized hundreds had been excluded.

Now I am again looking to you for help. In response to repeated requests through our website my team and I are setting out to compile an accurate account of those effected by the 1906 earthquake. This time we are looking for information on everyone who was here at the time, both survivors and those who perished. It doesn't matter if they were killed instantly, were uninjured, stayed to help rebuild, left on the first boat or refugee train. All of their stories are important. We know that many places along the entire West Coast felt the impact of this earthquake. If your ancestors were in an outlying area and you know the story, please let us include them."

Nancy
