trouble finding elusive ancestors

I am having a difficult time finding certain ancestors. The ones I'm having the most problems with are the following:
*Edward Lenahan (b. about 1907 Brooklyn, NY - d. between late 1940s - 1955) m. Adelaide Lever
*John McKay (b. Brooklyn, NY?, d. between 1906-1930s is my guess, most likely in Brooklyn) m. Mary Jane McKeever
*Charles Julius Werner (b. 1850s Germany - d. between 1884 - 1900 New York) m. Gertude Ketchum

I've searched the census records for them, but the first two men don't appear at all. Where else can I search for death dates and possibly places of burial?

Thanks so much.

I posted the following on the Pemiscot County Missouri message board: Looking for any/all information on James or Hattie (maybe named Bell) Cannon living in or around Hayti, Pemiscot County in the 1920's. James Cannon and Hattie Louell, Lovell, or Lowell (can't make out that 3rd letter) are listed on a birth certificate for James Marion Cannon born 17 Mar 1926 in Pemiscot County. There were at least 3 other female children. It is believed that James and Hattie (or Bell) both died before 1930. There are death certificates, but these are not completely filled out. James Marion Cannon was adopted by the Limpus family and was living with them by 1930. His children would be open to any and all information anyone might have about this family and would love to meet any relatives. It is believed that at least one of the girls went to an orphanage and was later adopted from there and maybe one of the girls went to Opal Limpus's sister. I am relatively new to ancestry.com but have done some research previously, just not about this. If anyone can point me to any other resources that might be helpful, I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you for your help. All I had for Malissa Brooks was her death sometime between 1894 to 1898. I have no idea of her parents name. But KY would be right.
Her husband Mason Duke was living in Grayson County Texas (Sherman) in 1900 he was living with his second wife Clara and son James.

I am very new to this so I have only look at the family search and some of the other free sites. I have very limited access to Ancestry. Again thank you very much
Thanks for the info. I was in contact with the Hope cemetery in Waterbury, VT. about the mixup re; F.C. and James Jockow.I was told it would be difficult to have it changed! However a Genealogist friend who went to a Gubtail reunion looked up Elsie Guptail/Jockow's grave and sure enough-James's grave stone was nearby and the 'W' was almost worn off. So, James is buried there... I've received help from RAOGK volunteers and they found many descendants of James and Elsie for me-so far no living contacts. My father's brothers and half sister were not proliferic, nor were their ancestors. The affidavits were fron the US military and sworn statements re; Pension files of my grandmother, Elizabeth. She and Cortez were married under the name of Jockow. The first official doc. is the marriage of their eldest son, George, 1866- who went to Canada
and owned the 'D'Allaird' Ladies apparel shops in Montreal abt. 1920. I have not found any of the Methodist Churches very helpful at all. Only a few marr. and death records of Eliz's sisters. I do have 2 genealogies from Canada-one for DeAllair and one for Jacques. I do not have access to Canadian records yet-maybe next year. So it goes-many brick walls. Befor 1830 it is difficult to trace anyone

I must have learned something because I FOUND my GGF Frederick C Metcalf, father of Arthur and husband of Mary Driscoll in a professional genealogists website using newspapers from San Francisco. All "formal" records were destroyed in the earthquake but the newspapers survived and he is there. Best $12 I ever spent. Saved hours of searching without results because I am history ignorant. All I knew is he was a clipper ship captain and my grandfather used to paint pictures of clipper ships. Sad, as his father abandoned him at the age of 5.

Looks like Mary Joslin came from Canada. As soon as I upgrade my Ancestry account, I should be able to document her existance. I wonder if they married in Canada and then moved to Leominster. I can't seem to stop searching long enough to set up my genealogy program. Is this common with new Ancestry users?

I was referring more to the census for James Jockow, father of F Cortez and his parents. I found census records for James Jockow to 1830 in Waterbury. Searching back further than the 1830 census can be futile without more information.

The 1870, 1880 census has F Cortez Jonkow born in Vermont.

The 1860 Census, has the family of James Jonkow, including F Cortez, all born in Vermont.

In the 1850 census, the census taker was a bit lazy, and didn't fill in every line. If you look at several other pages of this census takers work, you can understand his method. If the Place of Birth didn't change from the person above, he didn't bother to fill in the box. There's a box above the Jockow family, that has VT. This indicates that everyone below it was born in VT until a person well below the family, born in Mass get's a mention.

The earlier census are more primary sources for information. You found the "France" birth reference to his birth place in a census 1900 or after? I wouldn't pay attention to it, everything else earlier has Vermont.

Other census quirks, NY can look and be transcribed as NS, Nova Scotia. I think Nova Scotia is a long shot for this family, unless they were French Acadians.

As to his burial, I have a ancestor who's burial place was moved. He died in 1910, was buried, and replanted in another cemetery in 1929. His wife moved and wanted him closer. The cemetery in Waterbury should have a record of the date of internment. Contact them.

French Canadian sur and "Dit names";

What the name Jockow, Jocko might have been anglicized from is perplexing. Sounding out Jocko (w) in what it might be in French, the closest I come to is Jacqeau and that doesn't exist as a surname. Where are you finding the name DeAlliard? What was the affidavit for and what date was it? Dit names were basically phased out by 1865-1875 in Canada, people had to choose one surname.

DeAlliard doesn't really exist, the variations of what it could be: Dallaire (and several spelling variations) or de (of) Allard or Allaire (and several spelling variations). None of these are "dit" for any name, not even remotely, that sounds like Jockow.

Do you know their faith? If you haven't searched baptism records for the children in Waterbury, you're missing vital information that could answer some of your questions.

If you haven't search land records and a will for James, those are documents you'll want to find as well. You have the advantage of this family being stable and in one area. It shouldn't be too difficult to find that information. The local historical society can probably direct you how to find those records.
off topic question. When a person dies in a nursing home, aren't they required by law to file a death certificate with the state? there is AGAIN no record of my GM Sarah Ann Dejarlar Metcalf's death in either the SS death registery or the state of Mass. death index. OOPS that index begins in 1970 and she died in 1966, Back to my cousin who live right around the corner from the vital records office in Plymouth.
Kathy

Yes, I do have the Census' for F.C. Cortez. Some say he was born in Canada, and some of his family's census say he was born in Vermont. One even says he was born in France! I'm sure he was born in VT. because his father and mother were married in VT.-have marriage cert. For some reason VT. doesn't show any of the children of Elsie Guptail and James Jockow as born in VT. A real brick wall. F C is buried in Schenectady, NY. (death cert.) but VT. has him buried in Hope Cem. Waterbury. James in buried there, I think F.C. made out the death record and it was mixed up. James, I think was born in Canada-maybe Nova Scotia. The name was originally DeAllaird but changed to Jockow, then changed back. (one affidavit )Which is the Dit name?? Thanks for offering to help.

According to what I found, Malissa Brooks was born abt 1873. In the 1880 census she is in the household of her parents, William F and Martha Brooks; Renfrow, Butler, Kentucky. Does that sound right?

I found a death record for Duke, white, female, b. abt 1873, died, 1 Sep 1897. The part of the index this is from is very faded. There are several possibilities of location. If you can find where the husband and son were living in 1900, I'll have a closer look to see if any of those are in the list. Do you have access to Ancestry.com's databases? You can look yourself if you do.

When you are posting for information, include full locations, ie. town, county, state, for every event. Also include where you have tried to look, even if you've been unsuccessful. This helps others better understand how they might give you a hand in your search.

People who claim they search and search, are usually having a problem with how to search. It's also unclear what sources you have access to, or if you know where to find sources.

kshuller,

You hopefully learned something from the Desjarlais journey.

You are going in the right direction by getting organized. There is no secret to finding records, you simply have to learn where and how to look. I spend as much time learning how to research a particular area and how to read the records as I do finally searching for the records.

In the case of your next quest, the Metcalf, see what the birth record of Arthur W says. It's on-line in the NEGHS database. Since you have so many ancestors in Mass, a membership might be worth it. The NEGHS online database only goes to 1915, anything after you'll have to request the document by contacting the town/county clerk. All this info is on-line.

Take your time, those dead people aren't going anywhere, they'll wait to be discovered.

Happy trails

Mass. Vital Records search only goes up to 1910 online. You can get newer records from what I was told through NEHGS but out of a different database. The records I need most are post 1910. Marriage certificates are the only source that will connect me with some family members who I know NOTHING about other than who they married on my other side of the family.
I have got to set up a genealogy program before I go any further. I am already in possession of more records than my folders will hold. I am still in a state of shock. The famiies I thought I would NEVER find are abundant but those I thought would be so easy are brick walls. Namely my grandfather Metcalfs entire family line. I got a copy of his wife's death certificate (Mary Driscoll Metcalf)that shows who her parents are but only names him and where he was born. I KNOW he was born in Camden Maine. I just don't know to whom he was born. And there I go again off the beaten path to confusion. I got so excited when I found my GGF Dejarlais I lost focus. I used to say never pray for patience. God sends you more kids to teach you patience. After the change of life, God sends you genealogy to teach you patience.

addendum, re: James Jockow.

I found him in the 1830, 1840 census in Waterbury, Washington, Vermont.

The family appears to have deep roots in this location. Researching involves land records and church records for baptisms, marriages and burials. The resources to do this on Ancestry.com and the internet are minimal. I suggest contacting the local historical society. The surname Jockow was mangled in every record I found, Janso, Jacko, Sacco, etc.

I've been searching for a gr-grandfather, James Jockow, from Waterbury, VT,(b; 1803) a grandfather, Fernando Cortez Jockow/DeAllaird,(b; 1839,Vt.) Vermont has no records on either. Many years ago a fellow genealogist wrote she found F.C. Jockow in a Nova Scotia Index. I have not been able to find anything though my searches. If you can help, I'd appreciate it.
micheline julie warnier,

You've posted this same info several times on various boards. That's called cross posting and is verboten. Multiple postings are unnecessary, if someone is searching the same name, the indexing finds it. Choose one board to post on, the best one that serves your purpose.

If you are looking for living people, the post belongs on the Lost Friends and Family Board, which you've already posted on.

Please follow the Community Guidelines of the board.

There are more than a dozen trees on Ancestry.com, and probably some on rootsweb as well, with Joseph Vignola. None of these have sourcing, other than being copied from another unsourced tree.

To find member trees on Ancestry.com, put down the "SEARCH" tab menu, and hit "Public Member Trees".

I'm guessing you're relatively new to this, correct? Have you copied a lot of what you have from other trees?

There is nothing wrong with using info from other trees, but use it as a guide only. You need to verify others' claims with documentation before using them yourself, otherwise all you are doing is collecting names, not researching.

Others are here to help, but not to do the job of verifying info found in dozens of copied trees.

Unfortunately, this site doesn't stress the importance of documenting your claims, and many fall prey to the shaky leaf syndrome.

When you're just starting out, it helps to read a "how to" book on genealogy. You can find a good selection at your local library. Before proceeding further, get the basics under your belt, it will save you a lot of frustration in the future.

I am looking to go backward form Joseph Vignola with the birth date of 1714 born in Germany. When I saw the other sources with conflicting birth dates I didn't save them for some reason. They were from other trees as I remember.
Sorry for the poor info but I have just started using this tool and wasn't exactly sure what info would help out.
That link is to a private tree, but this one is to a public and has quite a bit of documentation attached. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/14222840/person/183813420?ssr...=

It has the ancestry of the Desjarlais going back to Belgium.

Be careful of the shaky leaf, there's lots of junk in those trees.

I don't know what cemetery you are asking about, there are a couple of things you can try. First I would contact the cemetery and get the plot listings for the headstones you want photos of. Once you have that info, look on the RAOGK.org site for someone in the area of the cemetery that offers to photo in the area cemeteries. You might get lucky.

NEHGS only has records up to 1910. Mary Desjarlais died in the 1920's?, Send for her death cert, you don't know what is on it until you have it, hope springs eternal.

Part of genealogy is organizing your research. A good program can help you keep it all together. If you've never used one, the Ancestry on-line tree program can be a decent starter. If you're PC based, you can download a free program, PAF from the familysearch.org site. The two work independently, meaning they don't sync info one to the other. You want to keep your information in something off-line, to insure you always have it. There are many stand alone gene programs. When you're ready, there are message boards that discuss the merits of them to help you choose which one works for you.

You know that Mary was the mother of 8 known children, and I'm betting there are more. Could this record be her?

Possibly but the surname of the people she was living with does not ring a bell. Not that that matters. Mom did not go into detail beyond her GM Dejarlais/Joslin. As soon as I can get into NEHGS I hope to find her death record and maybe that will give more information. BUT, if her kids gave the information on that certificate, it will be wrong because none of them knew much about her. All of her kids married in Massachusettes but only Sarah and Edward used Dejarlar as their surname. So strange. I can see misspelling over multiple generations but in the same family? I haven't been at this very long but if a record was set for a surname being misspelled Desjarlais would win. LOL.

One of Etta's daughter's is living with Rose in 1930, Rochester, NY.
Dorothy is one of Aunt Hattie AKA Ette AKA Henrietta's daughter's. I met her when I was a kid. Mom said Rose married but had no kids. Adopted some. Divorced. Because the age when first married for both is different, this is probably the second marriage.
In my handwritten notes it states Dorothy lived in Rochester New York so this record is confirmed.

I have hit a dead end in my search. Joseph Vignola was born in Germany in about 1714 according to my search. He was married to Genevieve Despres in 1760 she is from Quebec Canada and was born in 1736. I have seen a record of a Joseph Vignola that lists the birthdate of 1756 in Germany. Joseph and Geneviere had a son also named Joseph who was born about 1750 in Repentigny, Quebec, Canada and his wife was named Madeleine Proulx and she was born in 1759. I'm not really sure where to go from here. Any ideas?

Amelia Heddington / Headdington b abt 1815

I have come to a dead end with my research into Amelia. The facts I have are as follows:-

Amelia married Thomas Spurrier on 28th Dec 1834 at Lambeth Church aged 19 1/2. Amelia signed her name as Headdington.

Amelia died 11th Jan 1853 age 38 BMD 1d 64 Jan/Feb/Mar 1853

From a very old family bible I have a record of a death of a Sarah Waddington on 31st May 1836 age 46. I think this should read Sarah Heddington BMD Apr/May/Jun 1838 V4 Pg 343.

From this I have found a christening of Amelia at Christ Church, Southwark on 12th July 1815 showing her parents as James and Sarah Heddington.

How or where do I go to confirm this is correct?? I have been unable to find a marriage record for James and Sarah ??

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Memere & kshuller,

That would appear to be the death record for Leandre Desjarlais, father of Thomas. His father was Emmanuel according to his bap record. The names Emmanuel and Leandre are quite uncommon, so I'm in the go with flow camp. The death locality works for where Thomas and family milled around.

The bap record for Leandre Dejarlais,

11 Nov 1815 (baped 12 Nov), Louiseville (St-Antoine-de-Rivière-du-Loup), Yamaska, PQ, CN.

Parent: Emmanuel Dejarlais and Victoire Vincent.
Godparents: Antoine Vincent (uncle of the infant) & Louise St. Pierre.

If the death record is followed, his birth date would be 8 Oct 1807, and I don't have any explanation for the discrepancy other than who ever gave the death record info, just really didn't know.

The is something wacky with the marriage record for Leandre Dejarlais to Louise (Lucie) Lirette (Lorette) dite Rochefort. I'm finding a marriage for him in 1843 in Yamaska, same parents for him, but not the right bride, not even close. I suspect the priest messed up on the marriage record. I found several of the siblings of Thomas, all with the same mother as Thomas, so that checks out.

I took a quick look at the Leandre Desjarlais death record in Ashburnham in 1892:

April 19, 1892 - This Leandre was age 84y 6m 11d, so the age is definitely off. Not sure if a widower, the "m"s and "w"s are so similarly written, it is tough to tell. He is listed as a laborer, born in Canada, Father - Emanuel, birthplace unknown and no mother listed
Perhaps memeredee will look up this record for Leandre Desjarlais, Ashburnham, 1892 Vol. 429 Pg. 515 Death.

This might be either a brother (b 1862) or father (b 1821) of Thomas.

******************************************************

The 1851 Canadian Census

Canada East (Quebec) > Yamaska County > St David

Leandre Desjarlais 34
Luce Rochefort 38
Josephine Dejarlais 7
Delia 4
Marie 3
Louis 2
Thomas 1

*******************************
1861 Canadian Census

Canada East > Drummond

(this is a transcription in the order it's in the record, the father Leandre was not in the record)

Marie Desjarlais 11
Adelia 7
Louis 8
Thomas 9
Agnes 2
Leandre 1
Rosalie Lemiere 32

***************************************************

Louise Rochford (Thomas Desjarlais' mother)(b abt 1813) died, age 45, 16 Nov 1857, St-Guillaume-d`Upton, Yamaska, PQ, CN.

Leandre Dejarlais (b 1817) remarried Rosalie Lemeyer on 17 May 1858, St-Guillaume-d`Upton, Yamaska, PQ, CN

*************************************************

I didn't find any of the family in the 1871 Canadian Census.

The family always knew what was going on with him. My GM told my Mom, and she told me so someone must have told my GM. I opt for GGM Dejarlais. She was around when Mom was growing up and that would be 1911 up to 1927 when she died in the same town of Malden that Mom lived in with GM Metcalf. Because my GGM died before Thomas, that information must have been on his personal chart when he was admited making the assumption that SHE put him there after he hit his head. She did not live in New Hampshire during that time however so MAYBE he had other family members in Nashua. Worth checking that one out. He was admited to NH State Hospital in 1918 and in 1910 she was living with her daughter Henrietta and he was living in a boarding house in Nashua. I found him in the 1910 census.
I am taking a night off to get some sleep. I was awake at 4 this morning searching and 6 a.m. the other morning. No sleep makes me write conflicting information. :>) My mom insisted Thomas was born and died in New Hampshire but for sure he lived in Massachusettes during they years his kids were born.

My 2 cents in the record posted for Sarah Ann, I think it's correct, but where Memere?

It makes sense she was born in 1882, since a brother was born in 1884, unless they were twins, which you're certain they are not correct?

I do have the bap record for Thomas, I can send it via email, but can't post it on the board. You can send me your email address through the message service, just click on my name and send it to me in a message.

I did some research last week, and thought it was him, but until you had something that comfirmed it, you never know for certain. Do you know who gave the info on his death certificate? For all the dysfunction you've written about, someone knew the names of his parents, that's pretty unusual considering how elderly he was when he died.

Thomas's mother died when he was about 8 years old, his father remarried. I think the father may have ended up in Massachusetts, maybe Memere will have a look at a record I saw for a Leandre Dejarlas.

Thomas Dejarlais, b 20 Sep 1851, St-David-d`Yamaska, PQ, CN
Father: Leandre Dejarlais,
Mother: Lucie Lirette dite Rochefort.
Godfather: Basile Lirette dit Rochefort
Godmother: Angele Paul(hus)?

I have 2 Canadian (1861,1871) census records with the family. Curiously I didn't find any of the family in the Canadian 1881 census, which might mean he immigrated with his family.

I have the marriage record for the Thomas' parents.

I have 9/26/1884 for her birthday but I am not discounting this record. mom said the misspell on her birth certificate was so bad SS refused to accept it as her birth certificate. There could also be date mistakes.
