It is interesting to make that point. Our family is listed in the Italian Genealogical Society as nobles, but we originated in Ferrara and later moved a branch to Montecelio (circa 1200). Per the Society, our branch (the ones who moved) were granted title by the King, but I am uncertain which King would have done so. The branch I am descended from was part of the Kingdom of Naples, and we retained title until WWII.
Hard to really say- back then, who knows?
