He states that he arrived on or about February 2,
1911 at Sault Ste. Marie Michigan on the vessel Titanic from Hango, Finland.

Wasn't the Titanic's one and only voyage her maiden voyage when she
sank?

I have a copy of his Canadian border crossing. It is dated February 1910.
Bit of a long shot, but am trying to verify a family story that my Grandfather Albert George Mann, Kenisington 1880's with his second wife Mary were travelling on a boat - assume within European waters between 1935 and the outbreak of war. The ship was supposed to have been cut in half in a collision and they were seperated only be be reunited later finding that each had survived from separate halves, can't find any details of shipping accidents that tie up - it is possible that it may have been on a Swiss Lake as they did visit Switzerland around this time. Any information or suggestions of sources would be very welcome.
Thanks
David Andrews
Grandson

Ship St. Nicolas arrived NY 12 Sep 1856--Stuck on Sandbar?

My great-grandmother Magdalena Vogt Willi used to tell my father that when she emigrated from Switzerland, their ship got stuck on a sandbar and they had to sit offshore for several days before the ship could land.

I recently found that Magdalena and her sister came over on the ship St. Nicolas, which arrived in New York on 12 Sep 1856. I know it's a long shot, but I'd love to find a newspaper article or some other source corroborating her story, and I am hoping somebody here can give me some suggestions.

Capt. William BANNISTER

Hello :)

Capt. William C. BANNISTER (born 1818 in Devon) is my 3rd great grandfather. According to the records of my great grandparents, who did much genealogy work, he drowned at sea. One source places his death circa 1868. Another says that William's son, George (who emigrated to America and gave much of our original information), was 14 years old when his father drowned at sea...putting William's death about 1870. There is a notation that he may have been lost at Goodwin Sands.

Unfortunately, we do not know the name of his ship or even what type of ship it was. William's daughter, Dorothy, told her grandson that when she was a child (in the 1850s), she was aboard William's ship and that the sailors rigged up a swing for her.

So, I feel fairly confident I'm not just chasing some family myth.

William's family was living in the California District of Hartlepool at the time of the 1861 census. His wife, Catherine, is listed as the head of household, but under the heading, occupation, it reads "mariner from home". In 1874, she remarried to a John HAGUE.

I have searched and searched for a death record for William and through countless lists of wrecked ships, crew lists, etc, as have several of my relatives...all to no avail. My brain is just fried.

Does anyone here have any suggestions for tacking down William and his ship? Any advice warmly welcomed.

Thanks for your time! :)

Debra
California, USA

Eliphalet Remington Merry was lost at sea on the SS Central America in 1857. He was a California Forty-niner and this was his 3rd trip. I have been able to validate his genealogy, his residence in Tysons Corner, Virginia and other family items. Unfortunately, through all of the books and New York Times articles listing those lost at sea on that "ship of gold", I cannot validate that he was in fact on the ship. I also checked with the Mariner's Museum for any manifests, etc. Does anyone have a reference or other information that I can follow-up on?

I was always told that my grandfather (William McAllister) was a purser on this voyage. However I cannot find any details to substantiate this. He allegedly was rescued and arrived at Cork, before getting back to Liverpool-upon he discovered that his wife had died of appendicitis-leaving him with 3 young children to bring up. He would not give up his children to 'the poor house', instead he abandoned his time at sea and looked for employment at home in Liverpool.
Can anyone add more information ?

Hello;
I am looking for information about the ship that may have carried one of my acesters to America.

I am looking for New York Newspaper articles detailing the collision at sea, and the sinking of the Swedish Bark Iduna.
Iduna colided with the Shanunga, in the fog at 1 am on the morning of Aug 9th 1847.
Iduna was bound for New York with German and Swedish immigrants. Iduna sank in 30 minutes and 172 of the 206 persons on board were lost.
I have copies of thes Brooklyn Eagle articles regarding the sinking. The Brooklyn Eagle articles quote a Boston Post article about the sinking. The articles that I have were printed on Aug 17th and Aug 19th.
The survivors of the Iduna were picked up by the Shanunga and the Shanunga brought then to Boston arriving on the 16th or 17th. The collision occurred to the east of Sable Island.
I also have a copy of a Quebec newspaper article that quotes the Boston Post story.
I would really appreciate it if anyone here has access to any New York newspaper articles that give additional detail regarding this shipwreck.
One of the articles that I have gives a list of the survivors, but I would really like to find a list of all the passengers.
thanks
Russ

According to family stories they survived a shipwreck on one of those trips, probably sometime between 1820 and 1830. How would I find out more information? I reviewed a copy of Lloyd's List and there were a huge number of shipwrecks during that period and no index before 1838.

The "North King" was a frequent caller at Cobourg in the heyday of lake transport. She ran from Charlotte (the port of Rochester, NY) to various ports on the north shore of Lake Ontario including Cobourg, Port Hope and Toronto. When the North King, the Caspian or the Kingston arrived hundreds of citizens congregated to see them.
The large "North King," holding 520 passengers, made a run every day from Cobourg and Port Hope to Rochester.
My Great great Grandfather was Alexander McLellan (Also Spelled McLennan or McClellan). He was the wheelsman of the This Steamer until 1900, of October when he died form a Accident on it, not sure what that means, can anybody help get information on this ship before 1901.
You can reach me at fawnsfamilytree@hotmail.com

Loss of the Driver 1867

I am looking for information on the Driver a 540 ton barque which left Newcastle New South Wales on 13 May 1867 bound for Port Chalmers in New Zealand and was never heard of again. It used to called the Indiana (before being registered in Port Chalmers in 1864)It usually carried caol and the occasional passenger.
I have searched Otago newspspers for more detail but have only found one reference in thr ODT from 1899 in an article on NZ shipwrecks in chronological order that stated the barque Driver unknown was supposed to have foundered Dec 1879 with all hands(12).
Was there an inquiry in NSW?., any records from the Otago Harbour Board were destroyed in a fire years ago
MY gt grandmothers first husband Mark Mayson was aboard 'he was the first mate or perhaps standing in for the usual master who was not aboard on this trip.Marks widow Jessie Bagrie was 20 and his son only 3 months when he left Port Chalmers for the last time.

Daniel Simmons

I am posting two more articles on the sinking of the Daniel Simmons below, if anyone is interested. My great great grandfather was James W. Doane. He and his crew were lost at sea due to the incident in 1898 and if anyone has ANY more info on him it would be GREATLY appreciated!

All hopes for the safety of the schooner Daniel Simmons owned by I.G. Hutchinson, Brighton, Digby have been given up. The crew of the Simmons, who unless picked up and carried to some distant port must certainly have been lost, were: Capt. James W. Done, Wayland Height, mate and James and Timothy Comeau, hands. They were all Digby men. Digby's contribution to the number of those lost by the gale of November was a heavy one, as many a saddened home throughout the country bears testimony.

Religious Intelligencer--- 28 Dec. 1898

We regret to say that the Schr. Daniel Simmonds , of Brighton, Capt. Doane did not arrive after the storm This vessel sailed from Glouster, for Brighton in company with the Schr. Princess, on Friday morning before the storm, and no tidings have been received from her since, except that Capt. Ryan, master of the Princess, says he sighted her astern Friday noon about fifty miles from Glouster. They were then endeavoring to reel the sails and he fears, with others, that they met a watery grave. The Daniel Simmonds, 70 tons register, was built in the US and was purchased some years ago by Isaac Hutchinson of Brighton, from which port she has been unning ever since. Her crew consisted of J. W. Doane, master of Brighton, who leaves a wife and large family; Chas. W. Haight, also of Brighton, who leaves a wife and four young children; Dennis Comeau, of Plympton, seaman, who leaves a wife and one child, and Timothy Comeau, of Gilbert's Cove, cook and seaman and unmarried. This is the second vessel Mr. Hutchinson has lost in the same trade, the other being the Ocean Belle, Capt. Dwight Ruggles which went ashore on the American coast, some years ago, the crew however in that case saved.
Digby Courier--- 9 Dec. 1898

All hopes for the safety of the schooner Daniel Simmons owned by I.G. Hutchinson, Brighton, Digby have been given up. The crew of the Simmons, who unless picked up and carried to some distant port must certainly have been lost, were: Capt. James W.
Ireland to New York shipwreck

gggrandfather John Brophy came over from Ireland 1846-1850. The story is on the way his ship saved passengers from another ship from Ireland and he met Ellen Ryan and her brothers Thomas and Jack. They land in New York and are married almost immediately and I can trace them forward. I can't get backwards. Has anyone heard of a shipwreck in this time period from Ireland to New York? Any thoughts on where to look? thanks Brian

October 19, 1865 Lake Erie -Drowning/Shipwreck

We have a Buffalo, Erie Co., NY ancestor that was a "porter on the lake" and drowned
on October 19, 1865.
His burial was November 9, 1865. Assume that his body took some time to recover from lake.

Any information about a shipwreck, storm or the loss of lives due to drowning on Lake
Erie around the October 19, 1865 date. Newspaper article?

Where to look for such information? Resources to look into? What type/use of ship would
it be that had a porter working on it in the 1865 era on one of the Great Lakes? Passenger?

His name was Michael Berst/Bersch b. 1820 in Riedseltz, Alsace, France/Germany
and would have been around 45 years old in 1865. German first language, immigrated to
Buffalo, USA in 1830.

Brendon_@hughes.net

Ship sinks coming into Ellis Island?

Supposedly, when my grandfather's ship came in to Ellis Island from Poland (via ?) around 1900 (give or take), it capsized and he had to swim ashore. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Know the ship's name? Date of event?

Death Certificates for deaths at sea?

Hello,
Im grasping at straws looking for the death certificate of my Great Grandfather Solomon Davis. He was born in Dec. of 1852. Kings County New York Census records list his occupation as Sea Captain from 1880 to 1900. Sometime between 1900 and 1910 he died. The kings county Ny death index does not have a death record for him. Is there a special place I can write to in order to look for a death record? Also how can I find out who he worked for?

Thanks for any help and or suggestions

Yvonne

Hi, I am trying to find any information about the wreck of the "Betsy Caines" (or Caynes) on 17th February 1827, where she ran onto rocks at Tynemouth, England. The ship was apparently over 200 years old at the time.
This vessel was owned by Dutch Merchants named van Stain (or van Stein) and Sir John Caines of England. Tradition also has it that the "Betsy Caines" was chartered for conveying part of the suite of William and Mary of Orange to England in 1688/9.
Any information about the ship, or suggestions where to search next would be appreciated.

Ships lost in 1906 San Francisco earthquake

Does anyone know of a list of ships which were sunk in San Francisco Bay / Harbour when the great earthquake struck in 1906? I have reason to believe the man I am researching was a sailor on such a ship but happened to be ashore when the ship went down. He was apparently in uniform and because of this was ordered to help in the aftermath of the earthquake and fire. I believe he may have been on a British Mercantile ship.

In October of 2004 my friends and I went on a 6 hour walking journey in Halifax, Canada in search of the Graveyard holding the victims of Titanic. We found two. While adding new photos to my album I decided that someone may have these people in their family so would like to offer any photo of the tombstones that you would like for your record. I know I have traveled throughout US and England trying to find the graves of my family. If you are interested please let me know I will scan the photo or mail it to you.

For the tombstones I took face on I posted them on the surname page however there are quite afew that can be read other than those.

Shipwreck off Scotland 1922

I have a piece of correspondence in which the writer (American) refers to a shipwreck that he was in in October 1922. The postcards are from Glasgow and Edinburgh, so I suppose he is referring to an event that was in Scotland, though don't know whether he was refering to waters off the east or west coast. From there the writer continued on to Liverpool.

Does anybody know of a shipwreck that took place in that region in October 1922? I would be grateful for any leads.

Thanks, Jennifer

South Carolina Ship Wreck 1903

It is told in my family that in 1903 before she died my 3rd great-grandmother had a cousin come over here from France, we think. Anyway, the tale is that the cousin came arrived here in South Carolina, and then when he later embarked on his trip back home the ship he was on sank. Can anyone supply with the name of any NC or SC ship that sank about 1903? Would really appreciate any information.

North Carolina Ship Wreck 1849

There is a story in my family that my gg-grandfather who was born in England and immigrated to Virginia was lost in a ship wreck 200 miles off the coast of North Carolina in 1849. I had always thought it was off the coast of Virginia. I have no way of researching this story without a name of a ship.
All aboard were lost. His name was JAMES RUSSELL BARNETTE 2nd. I don't know if there was a ships manifest.
Can anyone lead me to a starting point for this type of research? Any help would be appreciated. I have used many web sites but none of them have been of much use without more information from my end.
Many Thanks,
Regenia Campbell bobnregi@ verizon.net

Wreck of the schooner Whittlesey 1832

I am trying to identify a Thrall family from Gramby CT who perished in the shipwreck of the schooner Elisha Whittlesley in 1832 on Lake Erie. An eye-witness account speaks of "the loss of friend Thrall and family from Gramby, CT and Henry A Holcomb's wife and child." Henry Holcomb's wife Fidelia and little son Samuel were two of the victims. Henry and his father Alexander barely managed to survive. Alexander's wife was Tryphena Thrall. I can only presume the Thralls who perished were her family, but I cannot find her parents or siblings. Any help much appreciated.
